he's definitely right, but Im sure Poch knows this so Im not sure what purpose Rose's comments serve. but I give him credit for candor, I guess.

I get what he is saying, I would love us to make a statement and sign a proper top drawer player, not just for the sake of it, but someone genuinely who will take us forwards. Bale fits the bill for me!

So we need someone that's attainable and also an improvement on the players we already have. That's getting increasingly difficult.

We don't need a marquee signing, we need better squad depth. We have a very strong 14-15, the trouble is when we suffer injuries. Financially we are not in a position to have a strong 20-25 players, that fit our wage structure that would mean having players sitting on the bench.

If Walker goes which does seem likely, will KWP be ready to step in for Trippier when the CL starts? If we get lucky on fixtures either side of a CL fixture we might get away with it or use Dier as a RB, otherwise we will need need a replacement and one that's good enough, but understands Poch will rotate if we have a 2 game week.

If we are going to make a bigger effort in the CL, we need cover for Alli, as he misses the 1st 3, but the trouble is how do we find a player that can help in those 3 but then be expected to only be a squad player. What we need to do is find a player that can cover Dembele, yes I know Winks looks like he will be a future replacement just not sure he is ready to be a permanent if Dembele was out for a long period just yet.

If we was able to buy a Danny Alves, 1 both Trippier and KWP would learn bundles from such an experienced player. Also Barkley would be perfect to rotate with Dembele, Eriksen, and Alli.

In principle he's right. It's all very well buying young, cheap "potential" for the future and I'm all for that but right now we need players for NOW !! With 4 competitions to play we need a couple of first team starters to take us up a level, if we don't win a trophy or two in the next couple of years our better players will be gone.

Will these qualify as big tent signings
or just experienced pros like Toby to go with
Jan., Moussa, Wanyama, the two best full-backs in the league, Lloris,
.
Dead end buying cheap young potential like Dele, Dier and Eriksen
or rearing our own like Winks and Harry Kane.
as we have seen

If you actually want to improve your squad depth, you sign players who will compete for places in the first XI. Not soneone who will compete for a place in the 18. You dont just sign bench players unless its worth the fee. £30m for a bench player is an absolutely preposterous figure and i'd like to think Poch has finally learned his lesson on that one.

It's the same every summer.

People say that we "need" a high-profile (i.e., expensive) signing because of what it "says about the club". Really, they want it because they can hold their own in the off-season banter stakes with their Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool mates.

Last summer, it was particularly grating, because the Manchester clubs were blowing money around like there was only one season left before the end of football. Nearly all the so-called "pundits" went for it and predicted they would be in a showdown for the title. And that we would finish 5th or 6th. People on SC wailed about "lack of ambition" - not a characteristic that either Levy (£700m+ regeneration development) or Pochettino ("we can be one of the big global clubs") evidently lacks.

And we did what we usually do in the 21c., at least until the last-minute wobbles struck and we committed £30m we didn't need to spend. We identified quality youth, we made canny acquisitions here and there and we concentrated, or rather Pochettino concentrated, on building a team.

It's working. We keep improving, year on year. There is no need to change it. And it's a moot question anyway, because of the wages issue. "Marquee" signings will not play for the salaries we offer. And it's plain enough that we aren't going to be changing that policy.

But the real reason for fans (as opposed to the press) ratcheting up all this false suspense about "marquee" signings is so they can have a good wail and anticipate failure when August comes. That pose is getting harder to pull off with every passing season. What will they do? How will they cope?

Why's rose calling for a marquee signing then?

A marquee signing would be great. We all remember when klinsmann signed it was a great buzz.

Do we need one? Not really. But it would be nice.

So who do we buy for the 1st team? Who doesn't deserve to be playing if there are no injury issues?

If all are fit and healthy a marquee signing is on the bench, or are you suggesting get a marquee signing that means that means 1 of the group are on the bench regularly? I can just see Alli, Eriksen or Kane being so happy not playing week in week out.

We only have 2 positions a marquee signing gets regular game time, Walker if he goes or Dembele when he is injured.

Chelsea and Leicester have both won the league over the last 2 seasons, all because they had the same 11 on the pitch for the majority of their matches, and no Europe commitments. We don't have the finances to compete in all 4 competitions, and can't afford to have an unhappy squad due to a marquee signing coming in, being over paid and having the player they replace wanting an excuse to go elsewhere for double their wages, due to lack of game time.

If wecan improve our first team then we should.

He also said:

"It's difficult for us as a club to compete with City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. The aim for the club should be to find the next Dele. I know it's easier said than done but to find someone from the lower leagues and make them a star.

That's probably not as exciting a headline though.

Bit of both approaches would be the ideal imo

I don't know who we can sign that could come straight in, and could then weaken the squad if the player they replace ain't happy sitting on the bench. I haven't seen a togetherness as a unit since the early 80's.

yes I know there's plenty of games, but top players want to play PL and CL, and if their wages are improved with win bonuses then playing 10 to 15 games less due to rotation means they might as well go play for a team that pays them double, and play those extra 10-15 games

I don't know either. That's why we have full time scouts.

Yes we are a great unit. If we can improve though and win trophies we will be able to afford better wages.

If we buy someone that keeps another player out of the team then great. We've improved. If they want to leave then we sell and get as much money as we can and use it to improve yet again.

in the league I really don't know of another team that has a better starting 11 than us, the only reason we haven't won back to back titles is squad depth, and 2 teams that have had no European football. I know we collapsed in our final 4 games last season, had we been leading towards the end, I don't think we would of had such a bad season, and had we not suffered so many injuries this season I believe we would of won it.
