Tottenham Supporters' Trust has condemned chants about poverty and joblessness aimed at Liverpool fans during Saturday's 1-1 draw at Anfield. Some of Spurs' fans were heard singing 'sign on', a chant about unemployment levels. Tottenham's supporters' trust said the chant "is not what we are about", adding: "We're Tottenham Hotspur. We're better than that.
"Poverty and joblessness are not fair game for banter."

I know people go on about banter and enjoying matchdays but there is so much that is unpleasant from supporters from all clubs that you can see on TV from every match, even watching in the pub the hatred from people is one of the most horrible things about football that I dislike, even young kids doing or singing discussing things its a terrible thing to see.

Idk. It is an old and boring chant tho. Surely we can come up with something more original in 40 odd years of chanting the same old same old? Maybe all stadiums should have a button which enables the PA to blast out an “err err” sound (akin to the sound used on Family Fortunes when someone repeats an answer) whenever the fans chant something lame and/or banal. Maybe the clubs could get together and organise some creative writing workshops at h/t too. Just saying.

Pathetic that we're still doing this. Not that it's particularly offensive just that it's so out of date and lame. You think season-ticket holders at Anfleld are on Universal Credit? You think chants about a recesssion forty years ago hurt their feelings? Unlikely.

Then does it really matter?

Blimey, how long has that chant been going and they now decide to chirp up about it?
It's just football humour and word play on their famous song, nothing more sinister than that.

Christ, we've created a humourless generation.

To be honest, maybe they should be more concerned with how those on a low income have been priced out of football instead.

Yes they have , the sausage roll situation at The Lane a very important issue..

Much more their level.

Their tweet seems more like them trying to get in with other club’s supporter groups rather than doing something for the benefit of their members and the wider fan base.

It has been complained about for years already, but considering the poverty across the country right now I'm not surprised it's being criticized currently.
It is offensive as well so I'm happy that it's being called out as such.

I do think we need to update our chants sometimes, agreed, so lets look at what else we can poke fun at them for... but they've been doing really well football wise, so..

err.. I mean, they were stripped of their status as a city of culture? Can we work something around that?

Do people really want our atmospheres in our stadiums to be like the US? Trust me, you don't. The most edgy song you'll get there is "we're better than you", as they don't want to be 'mean'. People around the world love the atmosphere of teams from the UK. Enjoy it while it lasts. This ridiculousness of a minority of over privileged people dictating to us what we can or can't sing has to stop.

But I guess it all comes under the attack on free speech we see now. People will pretend to be offended about absolutely anything.

Is it really offensive though?
Is it not just poking a bit of fun at an old sterotype?
I mean, I've been stuck on benefits for years and have never thought of it as offensive.

Did you take offence at the old Everton chants for Tim Howard too, on behalf of tourettes sufferers?

In my view, if you can't find humour in some of the shite life serves up, you may as well just give up.

Sadly, a lot of them really are offended, and if there's nothing evident to be offended about, they'll dig something up pretty soon. They seem to think they can produce a perfect World where everything is nice, bless 'em.

The problem –IMO – is that they don't think. They are given a set of 'acceptable' words, thoughts with which to line up with and they are 'absolutely right' and anyone that disagrees is the problem. No dialogue. I don't think they particularly want a perfect world (although that's what they say), their actions are often contradictory to what they preach. In a word, they are the least tolerant people out there.
