The Supporters Trust are right to condemn this chant. I do not like the fact that it offends Liverpool fans but what is more galling is that it offends a number of our own fans and many of the residents of Tottenham. It should never be forgotten that without Tottenham our club is nothing. It is the area we represent and this chant does the fans no credit.
Liverpool is not the place it was in the 1980s and the poverty in it is no worse than that in some areas of London. There are affluent areas in and around Liverpool and many of the Liverpool fans at the game will have been better off than a lot of our fans. In this context the chant is ridiculous.

Does it offend anyone though?
It feels to me like it's people that aren't on benefits who are deciding to be offended on behalf of people like me.
I find it funny, not offensive and people have no right to take offence on my behalf. I can stand up for myself if need be.

Let's just bloody sanitise everything.

It’s about as funny as the ‘You’re shit ahhhhh’ goal kick thing everyone used to do. Here’s the thing with ‘banter’ - it can be shit and lame as well as funny. Like telling a joke doesn’t automatically make you a funny person, as anyone who’s seen Live at the Apollo can confirm.

This chant is embarrassing.

Haringey has a poverty rate of 34% and four in 10 kids live in impoverished households. The chant itself may not actually offend anyone in those situations, but it completely ignores the fact that Tottenham Hotspur is based in a very working class area itself.

Is it not simply part of a football match/banter on the day?
Our fans are not full of vitriol like Chelski.
Once the game is done we do not start fights or anything silly.
I think it's blown out of proportion by the trust. BTW are you part of the supporters trust?

Agreed, this is hypocrisy, pure and simple. Only clubs from Luxembourg should be allowed to sing about people being poor :stop:

How long has that song been going, 70’s I would think.
Best one I heard at Liverpool was aimed at Phil Thompson when he was assistant manager.
Constantly jumping out of the dugout he was met with...
Sit down Pinocchio......You’ve got our stereo.
Of course, Liverpool fans never sing about Munich, and have managed to airbrush Heysel out of history.
THST obviously think they are important . No wonder Daniel just gives them lip service.

What a load of old rhubarb. Further ponceyfying of football. Trying to.make it akin to a night at the opera. How long before supporters are 'required to hand their song book into the local constabulary for approval. You must get your song books in at least 10 days before each game.

Fcuk off. We'll sing what we want...

Feb 19th 2025: All chanting banned at football matches because it might hurt some poor sod's feelings. Polite applause whilst seated may be tolerated.

Most conversations have nothing to do with offence. I always feel it's much more productive to discuss the point.

Football chants have been a big part of football since it began. I always find it amazing how many fans from different countries, notably the US, talk so positively about the atmosphere at British games.

I remember chatting to a German guy. He went to the London Olympics and told me how everyone was going on about the great atmosphere at the athletics. He said it was shit, just a lot of polite clapping and said the football fan atmosphere with the partisanship and songs was so much better.

As time moves on some chants and topics will become more unacceptable. I hope the majority of fans agree that racist chants are unacceptable and people singing such songs should be punished.

But are we ready to be condemning songs about people's economic status as a group? Even if I don't like the song, I'm not sure I'm ready to think this subject is off-topic or goes too far.

Amazes me that people take this kind of thing so seriously, it’s just a bit of light hearted banter. The world we live in where people can’t take a light hearted dig is so so dull!

So true. Who hasn't experienced the joyous feeling of chanting 'sign on, sign on' for the 4000th time? That sense of elation, even ecstasy. It's what makes life worth living. But the fun-nazis want to destroy everything that's beautiful in life.
