If he comes in and responds to the Poch he will be a world beater, and I think this is in the club's thinking.

Was this also the clubs(and Poch's) thinking on Sissoko? He'll be another £30m down the drain. When will we stop going for below average squad players who wont make the 18 if everyone is fit and start going for first team players who can actually push us further with this type of money?

Barkley is a 23 year old international. He's hardly a simple stopgap.

Some think he has a lot of potential some think he is limited but if we bought him it would be with the hope of him becoming a first team player.

You don't rate him and you've repeated this sentiment to nauseating levels but then you were the person who thought we missed Dempsey almost as much as Bale so forgive us if we don't care too much what you think.

Other than Sissoko, name all of these £30m stop gap players?

Seems there are two boats:

1) he is shit and will always be shit

2) he is talented just never has the proper guidance.

I am in the second boat. I don't doubt his technique and it is true that he hasn't put a full season together, but I think there is plenty to unearth.

There's 2 other boats. 3) improve the first team 4) improve the bench.

He's an upgrade on sissoko if you're in boat number 4.

One thing that I find encouraging is that when you go read Everton fans' thoughts on Barkley the most common criticism he gets is that he holds onto the ball too long and isn't decisive enough. This is something that Poch has helped Dembele to improve tremendously and I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect he might coax the same kind of improvement out of Barkley.

If Poch is able to get the best out of him he'd round out the squad really nicely, we could do with a player who can cover for both Dembele and Eriksen, IMO we're a bit thin in those areas.

I don't know if he will, Everton are trying to get too much considering that he's only got a year left on his contract and has basically fallen out with people. We'll probably wait it out for ages to force them to drop the price

So expect to sign him 2 days before the window ends then this will roll on for a bit yet.

At the moment reports are varying his price between £20m and £50m.

I don't believe this will be a quick and easy negotiation. Despite the extra TV money we can't just chuck an extra £10m-20m away to get the deal done quickly.

If Everton think another big team might put in an offer they might hold off, essentially the speed of the deal will likely be out of our hands.

I don't particularly want him as I think we can get better for cheaper. But I also have a sneaking suspicion that if Poch gets hold of him he'll absolutely tear it up and make most of us look like mugs.

But he doesn't play in a Sissoko position so a pointless argument
Hardly. He's a right footed attacking midfielder. Sissoko isn't exactly a winger if that is the point you are trying to make.

There are two issues with Barkley:

#1: His work off the ball is not good. He is nowhere near as tenacious as our other attacking midfielders in pressing and looking to win the ball back after losing it. Koeman is a very good manager, who likes his teams to press when they can and gets a lot out of his players. Barkley will have to up his workrate substantially if he wants to be in Pochettino's good graces.

#2: I have real doubts about Barkley embracing the role of a substitute. He has been a first choice player for years at Everton, even when he wasn't playing well two seasons ago. We've been lucky to have players like Son and Lamela, who have come from abroad and bided their time and taken the opportunity when it has arisen. Will Barkley be patient enough to play 15-20 minutes a match and start domestic cup games until injuries allow him a run of games? I think he'd be 5th choice AM with Lamela fully fit.
