spurs transfer target ivan perisic: ten things you need to know

Croatia midfielder catching Harry Redknapp's eye

92227791.jpg

1) Midfielder Perisic, now 22, was labelled “the new Asanovic” when he emerged in his native Croatia, after former Derby County player Aljosa Asanovic; a cultured midfielder who shone during Croatia's third-place finish at the 1998 World Cup.

2) Unlike Asanovic, Perisic is known for making thrusting bursts into the box and is capable of scoring headed goals, as well as finishing with his right and weaker left foot.

3) Perisic left his hometown club, Hajduk Split, at the age of 17 before he'd even kicked a ball for the first team. He was snapped up by French side FC Sochaux in 2007.

4) The promising Perisic was pursued by PSV Eindhoven, Ajax, Hamburg and Anderlecht while at Split, but was persuaded to join Sochaux by former Portsmouth manager Alain Perrin.

5) He didn't appear in the Sochaux first team either, going on loan to Belgian side KSV Roeselare in 2009, where he played 19 games and scored eight goals in the top flight, convincing Club Brugge to sign him for 250,000 Euros.

6) Perisic starred in the Croatia Under-21 team's Euro 2011 qualifying group campaign. His two goals in a 2-2 draw with Serbia in September (see video below) clinched top spot in Group 7.

7) At the end of 2010, Perisic scored eight goals in five Belgian Jupiler League games, including three match-winners and one four-goal haul for Club Brugge.

8) So far in the 2010/11 season, Perisic has scored 16 goals in 26 league appearances for Club Brugge, with a total of 30 goals in 77 games in all competitions since signing from Sochaux. Not bad for a midfielder.

9) Perisic has represented Croatia at under-17, under-18 and under-21 level, but has yet to make an appearance for Slaven Bilic's senior side.

10) He strikes a mean dead ball, leading to comparisons with David Beckham (see the video below).

I have to say that I thought Loic Remy was super for Marseille tonight and has everything to be a World class striker.
He can play on the right,on the left and down the middle and he went past players tonight as if they didn't exist.
We were linked with him last summer and apparently made a bid.
We should go back this summer with £25million and even more if needs be.

Christian Fuchs

One of the most underrated left backs in Europe who has been in sensational form all season. Would make a perfect under study or replacement for Assou Ekotto. He's tall for a full back, but is strong in defence and in attack, good crosser and is dangerous from set plays.

Marcel Schmelzer

Arguably the best left back in Europe right now. Hope he stays at Dortmund (My second team) for many years

Tell me more.

I dont see as much German footy as i'd like. Hows does he play? Would he compliment Bale well?

Ive been impressed with Coentrao everytime ive seen him. I do feel he's a little too offensive to combine effectively with Bale though.

Just watching bits of Ajax v Spartak

Anybody seen much of Daley Blind at Ajax?

If he turns out to be half the player his dad was.

I haven't seen too much of Ajax this year, but in this game, he was getting absolutely ripped apart by Aiden McGeady for 45 minutes, until he got subbed off.... That is only 45 minutes though/on an artifical pitch.

Alex looks a very good player though for Spartak, great goal from a free kick.... And Eriksen has looked sharp for Ajax though doesn't seem to have anyone good to play up top with (can only look good if the players you play with are decent when you're an attacking midfielder).

I was also thinking the same. But he played more as a wide man - while at Spurs he'd be the lone striker. He sure looked promising though but I saw him when he played CF for France last autumn and he was less than impressive.
Doubt he'd cost more than around £16m though.

Hardly seen Fuchs play (not enough to pass a judgement on him anyway) but doubt he'd join Spurs to sit on the bench.
Though I do like Ekotto I think he looks a bit suspect in defense at times...so was having an eye on LBs Taiwo & Cissokho in the CL. Personally I didn't find any of them convincing.
Taiwo, though built like an ox looked a bit awkward in defense, easily turned and not that good on the ball.
Not sure why there was so much hype about Cissokho the summer 2009 when it seem all the top clubs in Europe were after him. He was not that good going forward and didn't look that good in defense either. Ekotto looked a better player - and though Ekotto can't be "blamed" for being tough I dare say he look "tougher" than Cissokho.
Wouldn't mind Schmelzer at Spurs - but Spurs couldn't afford him. Nor would Spurs pay the "ransom" (aprx. £20m) for Coentrao.

My boy Tzavellas scored his first goal in the Bundesliga last weekend. You might have seen it as it was from the halfway line (to be fair Gekas couldn't reach it and distracted the keeper so it bounced over his head). I doubt Tzavvy will move now but he's someone I really enjoy. Stuart Pearce-like aggression, Ashley Cole-like running and BAE-like consistency-yet-insanity. My kinda left back.

He shouldn't, but you have to wonder what effect the loony tunes money that was being shelled out in January will have on asking prices this summer.

(^^^ in Dutch)

They headline it with:

Perisic: I'm ready for Tottenham

But in the actual write-up there isn't an exact mention of Tottenham (although they allude to it).

They mention the rumoured 7m euro bid. He goes on to say that he's not doing too badly and that such a transfer would be a good reward for his performances. He said if such an offer came in the board would have to decide whether or not to let him go, but that he thinks he's ready for a transfer.

It's his 2nd season in the top flight, but his 1st for Ajax. He was loaned out last year to Groningen where he was voted as the 2nd best LB (tied with Anita from Ajax) in the Eredivisie behind Dutch international Pieters from PSV.

He didn't get a look in under Jol, but became 1st choice under de Boer since Emanuelson went to Milan and Anita is moved to the DM position.

Daley is not the tallest nor the fastest defender there is, but he has technique and flair and like many Ajax defenders is actually a converted midfielder.

So far the general assesment is that he's dissapointed compared to what he showed for Groningen last season, both him and VDW are struggling with the attacking game plan under de Boer leaving them often exposed in counters since neither has real pace.

Chelsea assistant manager Michael Emenalo's open discussions about transfer targets not champions' style

Chelsea assistant manager Michael Emenalo is understood to have strained his relationship with key figures at the club, including Carlo Ancelotti, by extraordinarily discussing potential transfer targets.

Jason Burt
By Jason Burt 11:18PM GMT 21 Mar 2011

In a visit to Zagreb at the weekend, Emenalo gave an apparently remarkably frank interview to a Croatian newspaper, Sportske Novosti, in which he freely spoke about Chelsea’s interest in three players including the promising 19-year-old striker Ante Vukusic.

It is not Chelsea’s style to discuss potential transfer targets so openly, especially for someone in Emenalo’s role as Ancelotti’s assistant and a part of his backroom staff.

The Nigerian was appointed, of course, in highly controversial circumstances following the abrupt sacking of Ancelotti’s assistant Ray Wilkins in a move that deeply upset the manager.

Ancelotti had little say in Walikins being replaced by Emenalo, who is extremely well-connected at Chelsea, being directly selected by the club’s owner Roman Abramovich, and admitted as much.

It led to Ancelotti considering his own future although he has since maintained that he wants to stay at Chelsea and see out his contract which runs until June 2012. Chief executive Ron Gourlay caused some disquiet over the weekend when he spoke about the manager’s position being reviewed at the end of the season.

Chelsea insisted this was normal procedure but it did not amount to a ringing endorsement of Ancelotti although he defended the club, saying he had been fortunate to keep his job after a poor run of form. It’s understood that Ancelotti’s future is tied to results from now until the end of the campaign.

Emenalo’s previous job was to help compile scouting reports on Chelsea’s opposition but there have long been strong suggestions that he has also been recommending potential signings to Abramovich. Emenalo was himself recruited by Avram Grant when he was Chelsea’s manager.

Emenalo was in the Croatian capital on Saturday — before returning to sit on the bench for Sunday’s Premier League match at home to Manchester City — to watch Dinamo Zagreb face Hadjuk Split.

Emenalo was spotted in the Maksimir Stadium by Croatian reporters and was approached after the derby match. In the newspaper he was quoted as saying he “really liked” Vukusic who is described as a “born goalscorer” before adding that he was “really interested” in the teenager. Vukusic plays as a central striker and has been watched by several leading clubs for the past two years.

Emenalo also named the Dinamo midfielder Milan Badelj, who is 21, and said that he and Vukusic “definitely have the quality to play for Chelsea” although he added that he did not know whether the club would bid for the players or another, the 19-year-old right-back Sime Vrsaljko, who also plays for Dinamo and is close to making his full international debut.

Interestingly both Vukusic and Vrsaljko have strongly been linked with Arsenal in recent weeks.

What will also cause some irritation at Chelsea, as sources pointed out last night, will be the description in the newspaper of Emenalo as someone who has the “trust” of Abramovich and that he has the say in the buying of players although there was an element of editorialising in that.

Chelsea have already earmarked three young recruits, who have all been identified with the help of Ancelotti, for this summer as Abramovich continues to reinvest in his squad having spent £75 million in the January transfer window on Fernando Torres and David Luiz.

Talks are now on hold over Genk winger Kevin de Bruyne, although the clubs have been close to an agreement, while Anderlecht’s insistence on receiving € 20 million for the highly-rated 17-year-old striker Romelu Lukaku has cast some doubt on that deal. Chelsea are willing to pay half that amount but remain confident a deal can be struck. Chelsea are also expected to sign Brazilian Lucas Piazon after the 17-year-old’s club, Sao Paulo, leaked news of the deal last week.

I would hate to see it happen but Chelsea could definitely sign most of these guys and Milan Badelj looks exactly like a Lampard replacement.
I can't help thinking that we will be selling a good deal of players this summer and these are young players we should be looking at.

Fact of the day: Emanalo joined Chelsea directly from coaching a US under-15s girls football/soccer team.

Ivan Perisic interview (^^^ in Croatian).

Says he is aware of Tottenham's interest, but isn't sure if anything will come of it.

They asked him if he spoke with Tottenham's Croatians about Spurs. He said he didn't get the chance yet, but considering that there isn't anything concrete yet, he's not even sure if it's worth getting into.

He said that his performances at Club Brugge haven't gone unnoticed and that he's being pursued by clubs from all of the top leagues, but that nothing is finalized. He'd like to take that next step but first the clubs would need to reach an agreement. For now he's completely focused on finishing out the season with Club Brugge and getting them as far as possible in their play-offs.

When asked which league he'd like to continue his career in, he replied:

- The Bundesliga is my favourite. I think it suits me the best. It might be too early for the Premiership. For me it's most important that I'm playing, not to go somewhere and sit on the bench. I'm at the age where I need to be playing.

They go on to mention that Borussia Dortmund, Hamburg, and Hertha Berlin have all shown an interest in him.

Why would we be doing this?

Because a few are looking to leave and a few strikers will be sold to bring in replacements.
Certain Outs - Keane,Bentley,O'Hara and Dos Santos

Probable Outs -One of Hutton or Corluka and two out of three strikers Pav/Crouch/Defoe need to be replaced.

We may also see one of Woodgate/King allowed to leave.

I'm interested to see if Leandro Damiao plays for Brasil at the weekend against Scotland after getting a call up. He has looked good the couple of times I have seen him play for Internacional (I catch a game now and then since Sandro left having watched him closely) and could be a real star, maybe even the next true number 9 for Brasil.

He's only 21, 6ft2, big, strong and excellent in the air. He is very good around the 6 yard box and sort of reminds me a bit of Van Nistelrooy in the way he plays (he may not be as prolific but he has still scored 25 times in 40 games for them).

Considering our association with Internacional he may be one to keep an eye on.
