There was one positive which came out of the game yesterday - the return of the non-stop Yid Army chant by our brilliant away fans.

Been several years since I've heard that and it sounds absolutely fantastic, even the commentators mentioned it. It's intimidating, supportive, easy to do and can even be done in sections so that people can have a rest for a minute while others continue the chant. It's like one of those powerful European fan chants only this one actually sounds great.

I haven't heard it since the height of the Poch era I think, though I'm sure the away fans have been doing it in the mean time.

Absolutely love that chant and we need to make it our "thing".

where do you start we didn't work there keeper all night - the performance was lacklustre lacking any intensity - everything was wrong - the tactics been the same all season we are easy to play against there is no plan b and to be honest there aint much of a plan a - not picking your strongest side is a nonsense we had a decent chance of winning that cup sends the wrong message if you can't manage two games a week I give up -

shit season been shit to watch and for the first time in 40 years I am going to begrudge my season ticket renewal

I looked at the team last night prior to KO and felt we would sneak this against a pretty good championship side on reflection I got it wrong. When Dier lines up with Romero you think ok Romero is there he can be relied on. When Dier looks around and sees Sanchez he must think OMG I'm going to have to work really hard. We have paid over £40m for Sanchez and I cannot recall a full 90 minutes where he looked comfortable. Poor Sarr is only 19 I have high hopes for him but after last night he could disappear like so many before him that have worn a spurs shirt. As for up front Son has lost it and needs to be benched for awhile to get his head back in it. Richy, I'll put last night down to just a bad day. The rest, well lets just say Lucas played like someone who knew he was going soon. Porro only recently joined and has not got up to speed but there are glimpses of what can be. Forster he had one job and he fell like a dying buffalo for their goal, he needs replacing in the summer, any idea he has of being no 1 is laughable. PEH plays one good game then 5 bad. He would make it as an aerospace coordinator the number of times he waves his arms around. Kane, Skipp et al it was all to late. I can't wait to get Lloris, Benni, Yves and a fully fit Kulu back or we will be back to playing Thursday night if we are lucky. Conte also needs to come out soon and tell us all if he is staying or going as there is no point continuing if he going to leave at the end of the season.

I posted in the team V Shef Utd thread that needed to go full strength for this one. Quite a few(the majority I'd say) thought we should rotate so it's not like it was something a lot of fans wouldn't have done. I knew after the first 15 minutes we were in for a rough night because the team started dropping deeper and deeper after the early back line mistakes again. I was actually hoping we'd go into the break one nil down so we could have had a reset at half time. That back line without Romero is at panic stations from the first mistake until the final whistle, and the rest of the team don't trust they can keep the ball out of the net.

So Whose fault was it last night?

A/Was it the players fault because they didn't want it enough or work hard enough.
B/ Was it the Coaches fault because he picked those players and didn't change it soon enough
C/Was it Levy's fault because the squad is half full of players that are just not good enough and/or mentally right to win competitions and be consistent.

The real answer is all of the above. Of the players that played some of them didn't put enough of a shift in Son is the prime example of this doesn't tackle or close down just occupies space when we are out of possession and he's a complete passenger when he's not scoring. Stellini/Conte or whoever picked that side got it all wrong trusting some of those players to get it done without the big guns was a big mistake. Finally Levy has left us in a position where unless Kane and Romero play we are either toothless up top, or deer in the headlights at the back. Danjuma is a prime example of everything Levy prioritises as far as this football club. VFM regardless if whether it's the right fit, or what the manager is asking for. At least they got to save that £50million he told us all we had to spend on the squad though the share issue though hey.

You know who wasn't at fault though the fans who had to sit through that and sung their hearts out in a positive manor for the full 90. The only part of this club to come out of last night with any credit whatsoever.

Bit of all those things but Conte/Stellini have to take most of the blame with the line up

My daughter has a brass band recital night next Wednesday. It clashes with the Milan game. The quality isn’t great, no cohesion and the timing and application is terrible but I feel I should offer my support.

Or I could go and see my daughter’s recital.

ManU rotated and won, there is no blame with using the squad, its needed. That team out there should have been good enough for this match.

But Man United have a better squad and dont have players who have consistently lost to lower league teams in the cups.

Man Uniteds aim as a club is silverware, not top 4.

Nothing wrong with rotation, you just dont make 8 positional changes and leave your best player and best defender out. Thats not even opinion, thats fact.

This result was such a gut puncher. Honestly finding it so hard to feel positive about the club which is mad considering we just got a rare win against Chelsea. I couldn't give a toss about getting top 4 or not. I'm so bored of even hearing the phrase.

We could have won the cup this year. It has opened up spectacularly for anyone left in the competition - especially City and United. The players completely let us down once again.

Agree. Nothing wrong with rotation, but something quite clearly and massively wrong with the way we do rotation, the way we convey our priorities. It almost feels like we do it because "that´s what big clubs do". Ha bloody ha. The end result is that every - single - bloody - away - cup-tie against supposedly inferior opposition ends up a carbon copy disjointed disaster zone. Seen one, seen them all. Fielding your reserves? Go right ahead. Manager in jail. No problem at all....

Shame you deleted mate... You missed 6000 fantastic Spurs fans singing their hearts out, watching a bunch of overpaid players who really don't seem to care much.

Here's some way out thinking........if you want to rest and rotate players, absolutely fine......but how about picking your strongest lineup to start, get the game won and then sub the players off......won't work all the time but it will work a lot more than our current 'strategy'..........

All these excuses we make for our team but Sheffield fielded a sub standard team full of replacements and beat us all over the park. Any one of their players had more desire than our entire team. In fact it was only our fans that turned up.

Why the hell not start with the first team, I understand resting players for earlier games but that’s just wrong,
Because we played Chelsea sunday, play Wolves on saturday and Milan on wednesday.

Sheffield changed 8 players.

We changed "only" 5
Son, last years top scorer, in for Kane. Should be enough.
- Porro (40m) for Emerson. Should be enough.
- sanchez (40m) for Romero. Should be enough.
Sarr for Skipp also should be fine. As should Perisic for Lenglet.

This has nothing to do with playing our best players. We should not need to.

Edit: Forgot Lucas for Kulu.

Alot of our players and they've done so for years definitely believe they can rock up to games and coast through them and think we'll win.

When you play a weakened team it sends the message that the game will be easier. It is a mental thing of course. If you play Kane, Romero, Kulusevski - theyre the talismen, it sends the message that we are here to win, it sends the message that this game we are taking seriously and that it wont be easy.

This is why you always play your best team from the start then you can sub and rotate during the game if you are winning. I keep harping on about this so ill stop but I still find it baffling and that is because I was dead against weakening the team from the start because this was a winnable cup competition.

Management should know this. It is like anything, it sets the tone. In a weird way, it reminds me of when you are invited to a party and you know whether it will be good or not if the popular fun extroverted people are turning up.

I thought after a night to process, that I'd feel a bit better but nope. A real chance for silverware and they just waste our time and especially the poor away fans who did us so proud. I really don't know what the point is of us as a club. I really feel like just stopping watching. So sad it's come to this

The problem is that we brought in a load of players who were pretty much stone cold and expected them to gel instantly. Sanchez and Lucas have hardly kicked a ball in months, Sarr and Hojbjerg haven't played together, Porro has had one outing. Then we had players badly out of form in Son, Richarlison, Kulusevski and Perisic. I can pretty much guarantee that had Bentancur and Bissouma not been injured, Sarr and Skipp wouldn't have had a kick up til now. That is atrocious squad management imo, especially when you have a manager who whinges about squad depth one year and then refuses to let players at his disposal get a sniff, only to throw them in at the deep end when there's no alternative.
This is my biggest gripe with him at the moment.

When we have our best 11 - against Chelsea or WH, we look a lot more solid.

But he has rotated the squad badly at important moments.

A few points:
- Continuously subbing out Deki earlier in the season when it was clear Son was the problem.
- That was compounded by the fact Richarlison's worst position is at RWF, and you then have 2 ineffective wingers on the pitch.
- Giving Porro his first start alongside Tanganga, and away from home. Porro should have started with Romero first to ease him in.
- Not switiching to 3 in midfield when we are really struggling. The quality is there to do that.

Some of the issues are down to not having the right personnel in the squad but Conte really hasnt helped himself at times.
