Sigardsson doesn't deserve to be a number 10 in our team

I like him and I want to keep him. And I think this quick scape-goating of players is horrible. Guy is MOTM and a thread like this appears. Sad really.

HappySpur your name is the most ironic thing on here, we are never happy. We just won a game we would have drawn last season, considering the turn around in the first XI and missing arguably one of the top 5 players in Europe. And people are still complaining .... after 1 game!!

The funny old bloke who has the Arsenal rant on YouTube isn;t so funny when you realise there are just as many kneeJERKS wondering around here!

He was okay. He must start to take his chances. But when the Bale situation is sorted I think he is a good enough squad player. Still very young, don't forget.

I agree 100% a great squad player, he isn't the very best, but he is good enough and if we could find someone better (he may already be here) he is a great back up.

all I know is that we definitely can't go the entire season with him in that position, because he's clearly not up to it. don't mind him as a squad player, but never in a million years is he going to be a top-class #10

Disagree. Soldado scored his only chance, Gylfi missed three good ones. Soldado had fuck all service, but his movement was good all game, plus he made arguably the best pass of the game to set up Gylfi.

It's not Soldado's fault that he isn't getting the service.

Are you having a laugh?

Soldado did nothing other than score a penalty (not that I am complaining - that in itself is a huge achievement for a Spurs player).

I can only assume the pass you are referring to is the 10 yard pass inside to Siggy which he put wide second half? If you genuinely think that was the best pass of the game I can only assume you just watched the highlights.

He was outstanding there for Swansea...

... and Hoffenheim.

Why can't he play well there for us?

Because of the way we play and the way Soldado scores goals and needs service to score them, which Siggy doesnt really provide, he's more of a Lampard rather than say...a Willian

with all due respect to those teams, because we're considerably better than them, and he isn't one of the best/better players on the team

I watched the whole game live, thanks. If you thought Soldado did nothing other than scoring a penalty then you probably need to watch a bit more closely. He did his job very well. I saw him making good runs off the ball behind the defence, only to not receive the pass he needed. He dropped deep at times and held the ball up well. If he doesn't get the right service, which he didn't, then there's not a great deal more he can do.

That pass although not supremely difficult, created the best chance of the game (in open play). We all know what a certain Mr. Defoe would have done in that situation.

Mind you I would not say no to Antonio Di Natale. I know he's 35 but what a player!!!

he is a decent player. Lacks pace or that little bit of magic to set him apart. But technically sound

Only ever be a squad player in my opinion. But we could do much worse, I dont see the issue with him to be honest- only a fool would assume he is our new number 10 because he started at Palace.

Agree that he should be a good back up. The problem is that he doesn't have the pace to go past people or the skill to beat people. VDV was equally as slow but his goals, character and temperament more than made up for this and fully justified his place in the team. We suffered last season by not replacing him and hopefully with Willian coming in maybe we can finally get that creative player we lacked since VDV left.

Defoe came on and created the best chance of the game all on his own accord.

Just to clarify, I am not criticising Soldado here - I just thought he gave a 6/10 performance.

I would like to think his contribution is greater in the coming games, but then I am sure it will be.

I thought Siggy contributed well and I can see why some rated him MOTM, but he really should have come off the pitch with a goal or two (or three).

Oh how I miss Rafa Van Der Vaart

I never quite understood the whole Van Der Vaart enigma.

He was capable of some quite magical moments, but for me he often created our greatest problems.

We always conceded when he was right wing (Redknapps fault as much as his) and even when played as a number 10 he would drop so deep then not have any options to pass forward then blame everyone else.

Don't even get me started on his fitness and work rate. He worked hard when the ball was near him, that seemed to fool a lot of fans.

Penalties aside, I thoroughly expect Siggy to outscore VDV this season.

This seasons Dempsey thread!

100% agree. Why can't we just get behind the team and the players and stop the scapegoating.

I haven't read the whole thread as I like to generally remain calm at work and avoid irritation but a thread like this after 1 game this season is surely just plain daft?

We have new players who will take time to gel, we have a few injuries which are going to affect our team as a whole and we still picked up 3 points away from home, against a (albeit poor) team who were at the very least well up for their first top flight game in many years.

Gylfi was stuck out of position last year regularly, along with Holtby and I think both got a bit of stick as a result. So we're playing GS in his preferred position now - the position he thrived in at Swansea and one where most sensible people believe he can make an impact - let's give him a chance to do that eh? Novel idea I know.

If he fails to perform then i'll be popping back to admit that but for now i'll be reserving judgement and supporting the player and the team.

I think he'll prove a few people wrong. he's a player that will mature nicely and I think he'll have a good season.

Will he be here after the window?

For me Gylfi tries his socks off but his first touch and close control is just lacking. With Will not arriving I'm not sure Gylfi will go but I just don't think he's good enough for top 4 push.

I'm not seeing any improvement in Gylfi's overall game
