Sigurdsson - Does AVB see something special I can't?

Or is he just waiting for Sigs to show his potential?

I don't dislike the player. He works hard, gets in the box and can score goals.

But I have a feeling he's an AVB favourite and sometimes gets in front of better players.

This isn't a black and white 'Is Sigs GOOD or BAD' thread.

The question is, does AVB favouritise him over other players?

And made a few crucial interceptions today when the Villans were breaking

Here we go..

Where are we going? :)

Calm yourself. This isn't a thread to pull Sigs apart. As I said, I quite like him.

I just think he often gets picked without really making an impression.

You could argue we let VDV go because of AVB's faith in Sigs. That shows how much AVB's likes him. It's now his second season at Spurs, I still haven't been convinced he deserves a regular 1st team spot.

The good news is Siggs will now score two goals against Hull to make NevilleB look stupid.

Well maybe he will...but I didn't say he couldn't score goals or was a bad player...did I?

I said he seemed to be an AVB favourite who might get into the team on that basis rather than being better than another player.

I'm not ruling out him suddenly maturing and becoming an amazing player. I think he has a lot of potential.

I just wonder if AVB keeps playing him because he sees things in him that haven't come out yet.

He could be the next Lampard. It's possible.

I think in today's case we needed to keep him on the left because of the other changes in the side. He's been solid.

I agree. That's actually a good description of him 'solid'.

He's a 7/10 player at the moment.

Pretty good. Just wonder if he'll keep his spot once everyone is fit and up to speed.

If everyone is honest...would he be a regular in your team?

Where would you play him?

Sigurdsson isn't bad, he's just too much of a luxury. Reminds me a bit of Kranjcar. He is capable of doing great things with the ball and can score some great goals, but he is a bit slow and laborious. He is not a wide player. He should not play there. He is central AM. He is not good enough in some aspects to pull the strings in the #10 spot, so he doesn't play there. He is a player without a position unless he is at a side lower in the table.

In AVB's own words after norwich : Gylfi is a player we like he shows fight and determination , works hard for the team , he came after the international break with a knock wasn't going to be involved but when we needed him ( after Chadli's injury) he made himself available

siggy may be not the best player but he has my respect and support and I think he's a very valuable member of our squad

He was the only one scoring goals. I imagine he'll be dropped for Eriksen or Lamela now that he's not doing that.

He'd be a quality player played in a genuine midfield 3 rather than out of position on the wing. Probably stands out in training because practice games are on small pitches and his lack of pace doesn't show. That and he's currently our top-scorer

For me he's a useful player this season.

He is in his 2nd season at Spurs and his performances are clearly better than last season now he is more comfortable. He also has previous Prem experience.

Lennon is injured. Lamela and Chadli are new to the league so AVB wants to integrate them a bit more slowly.

The only other real option we have is playing Eriksen on the left and Holtby as the number 10.

Because of these factors I can understand AVB playing Sig. He's our joint top Prem scorer after all.

Once the likes of Lamela, Eriksen and Chadli are integrated I can see Sig getting pushed out. But this season he will be a regular player for us.

He has a chance to show he is good enough to be a first team player. So far he is doing OK, nothing more, nothing less.

To the OP - don't concern yourself with half the responses to this thread. Any debate on a player makes half the board just assume you are saying someone is useless even when you blatantly haven't said anything of the kind.

He's one of those players that you think "what is the point of him?". After a couple more dodgy performances you think "he's not good enough". That's when he'll play well and score a couple of crucial goals.

Do I think he's good enough to rely on as a first teamer all season? No. Do I think he's a good player to have around the squad? Yes. That's about it. In the long run I'm sure no one has Sigg in their ideal first XI.
