did harry say anything about modric or bale?

Don't remember him saying anything mate but you'll catch the interview all evening on SSN. It was mostly about the game and then about Keane.

Anyway Supersi seems to have answered that one.

Keano may as well finish his career with us. If it wasn't for Ramos I reckon he would have stayed with us instead of going to Liverpool.

just got back and my brief ratings

Gomes - poor kicking on a number of ocassions today
Kaboul - loves to get forward and very good at it, however at a cost (2nd goal was where he was caught out of position)
BAE - solid
King - Pretty poor from him tbh - his striker got the better of him IMO
Bassong - Similar to King
Giovani - Top class performance
Palacios - Very poor, some shocking passing (i know it was his 1st game)
Jenas - pretty decent. kept the ball pretty well but not his normal energy
Lennon - best pre season performance
Crouch - What he did he did well. Has an excellent touch
Pav - Did very little other than a 2 yd tap in. Shocking first touch!
Hudd - Top class player. So composed and an amazing passer. changed the game
Keane - Back to his old self - dropping deep to get the ball, chasing down and 2 excellent finishes
Rose - Skinned his man a couple of times
Cudicini - had nothing to do
Walker/Naughton - didnt have enough time to do anything of note

cheers supersi and haxman :) - and someone on the thread i made about it has told me both plus dawson were rested, which is a great, great, relief to me

three of our best outfield players and so vital for saturday - if they're still fit after the internationals

i'll look out for the SSN i/v

tend not to watch it too much before prem starts as there's too much on other sports, of which i've no interest

and today i guess it was mainly about football league, which apart from bostock, button etc doesn't interest me much ATM either

Surprised at all the negative comments about Jenas today. I have never rated the guy at all but thought he played pretty well today. He was far more involved than normal and hit one surblime pass over the defender for Lennon to run on to.

Considering we rested Dawson, Modric and Bale and JD is injured, it wasn't a bad performance. Some very real plusses coupled with some worrying negatives.

Gio at last produced something in a Spurs shirt. Let's hope his attitude has improved and he can repeat today's performance in the league/Europe. Keane's goals were as a result of defence splitting passes from Huddlestone and Livermore respectively. Goalkeeper probably should have done better for the winner. Rose showed some nice touches in the short time he was on.

The negatives mainly concerned the defence. Ledley was at fault for the first goal (although I felt that the scorer came back from an offside position) and was pretty poor throughout. He also missed a sitter. Kaboul went missing for the second. BAE and Bassong were far from perfect. Let's hope that Dawson and Corluka improve the situation. We are unlikely to get away with so many mistakes next Saturday.

.

i'm not at all surprised, many spurs fans don't watch jj with their eyes but with blind prejudice, which leads them to make statments, which as stemark rightly says, shows they don't have a clue what they're talking about

The problem with the defence has been that we've changed it so much in pre-season. I'm sure once we get the best back 4 together again we'll be a lot more solid.

if Gio isn't in our selected 25 then we are just plain stupid he has been amazing pre-season but JJ can just fuck off

JJ has had a decent pre season as mentioned by many who have watched him and by his manager. He has played in virtually every game which suggests to me he will be in the 25. I think some people need to get over their issues with JJ and start supporting the lad, because like it or not - he will be playing games this season.

Just got back from the stadium; it was good to see both of our last pre-season games live (I was in Lisbon earlier this week). For the second game in a row, a better performance in the second half, when we started to pass and move with better fluidity, thanks largely to Huddlestone's improved distribution and intelligent play as opposed to Jenas and to the removal of Crouch factor (ie the tendency to play high long ball).

As many have noted, apart from Giovani, no one else played really well in the first half. However, I noticed how Pav and Gio combined well a few times even before the goal, and Pav was more effective than Crouch in his movement and link-up play, although his first touch still lets him down occasionally. We should remember that he was injured since the first pre-season game and since then has only played about an hour before today. With more training and games he is likely to contribute more than Crouch to the team with Modric and/or Gio behind him. And he can link up better with Defoe than Keane, I believe.

So nice to see so many people coming round to finally appreciating Gio. I find the comments like "at last produced something in a Spurs shirt" puzzling and laughable - don't these people realize that this is the FIRST time he has actually played for 2 let alone 3 games in a row for Spurs under the current management? Do they really think the occasions like the 12 minutes at the end of the Wolves game, when the whole team was poor and at the stage when the sole tactics became "hit (long ball to) Crouchy", constitute a chance he "didn't take"? Of course he has probably become more responsible himself (both on and off the pitch), thanks in no small measure to regular talks with Javier Aguirre, as he himself noted after the Concacaf Cup last year when he was voted the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

I always believed that given enough belief/support from the coaches, Giovani could contribute much more to the team than someone like eg Bentley - something he always showed for Mexico under Aguirre. He has enough awareness and discipline to combine being a team player and providing individual skill/direct progressive play regularly.

Finally, I agree with many who are concerned about our defence atm, especially centrebacks. King was really rusty today and perhaps made Bassong more nervous rather than reassuring him as he usually does with his younger partner, be it Dawson or someone else.
I think today was a missed opportunity to play Dawson and Bassong together, at least for the 2nd half. As it is, we have wasted 3 full games on playing Corluka as a CB, only to reconfirm that he is not working there at the moment. Benfica game was the one where Corluka could have given way to Bassong, for instance.
Benfica and Fiorentina created quite a few chances without actually dominating the game - and in Viola's case, missing 3-4 of their best attacking players (Jovetic, playmaker Montolivo in the 1st half, Vargas and Mutu).
I think Man City will very likely create at least several chances too, and I only hope they will either miss from them or Gomes will save us like he did so many times last season.

Had a good day today. First time I can remember there has been no inward or outward movement....so there was no excitement of seeing a new signing which did dampen my mood before I got there.

But I was impressed with a very spirited performance that saw Harry flex a very very talented squad without using Modric, Bale, Defoe, Bentley, Woodgate.

I have been a Jenas critic for quite some time, but he had a solid game, at times I thought he was a little deep and didnt fill the gap behind Crouch and Pav well, but he passed it well and looked alrght. Not a starter, but a good squad player.

Giovani was lively, kept the ball well and always full of invention. His close control - demonstrated by the goal - was brilliant....like a new signing really.

Robbie Keane was FANTASTIC I feel. He dropped off playing in the hole, dropping into CM at times. He was always available, kept the ball fantastically, made very very smart runs and took his goals well. This looked more the Keane of old...I have previously thought its time for him to move on, but I got to say his experience and intelligence will be vital in Europe and I think he can be a vital squad player this year. As much as I hope he stays, is celebrations seemed to tell a tale and that he may feel he has played his last game.

Lennon was poor, he needs to smarten up his game, his pace scares defenders but he doesnt have the movement and intelligence yet. Like when to cross low, when to hang it up, when to deliver it early, when to cut inside.

So good and reassuring to see BAE and Bassong back, Bassong's tackle on the Fiorentina winger that flattened him was great.

Kaboul was also very good, I like him alot at RB. Sure Corluka is slow and steady eddie there, we are rarely troubled down that flank when he plays. But Kaboul gives us alot going forward, plus he is a threat at set plays and can blast the odd screamer. I love Kaboul for his explosive nature....Dani Alves he ain't...but I feel it gives Lennon alot of support there.

Tidbits:
Danny Rose looks like a really good utility player, not a world beater but tries his heart out and can tackle and close down very well...plus a nice shot ;).
Jake Livermore is....alive!? Another year on loan.
The Kyles both look good long term fullbacks. Walker looks good going forward.
The goals were..Gomes' bad kick (admittdly Ledley lost Gilardino then, but it was a quality cross) and the second was bread and butter...poor.

Sorry its so bloody long! Just quite upbeat now....we just had that air that we didnt play so great but I always sensed we would get back in it and nick it.

I saw it exactly the same as you except I thought Lennon also had his best pre season performance - looked much sharper and beat his man a few times with great pace. Gio did look top drawer - i really liked how he and Lennon kept switching wings in the 1st half! If we can keep him out of the pubs then we have an excellent player!

Why was there a cut off in January? You dont register the players until the 1st September! Very odd!

To quote the Premier League...

"In keeping with UEFA guidelines, an Under 21 player is defined as one who is under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year in which the season commences. For the 2010/11 campaign Under 21 players will have been born on or after 1st January 1989."
