I haven't checked the whole thread except the page when Gomes fired off a tremndous pin-point clearance to their winger who dinked a cross over King's head for Gilardino to score past a motionless keeper.

But I feel this has been glossed over.

Yet again, albeit it in a meaningless pre-season game, as someone pointed out to me on the front page, we have all the play and confidence is soaring only for a silly, stupid gaff from the keeper.

He can be as world class as we all know he can be but if he loses concentration as regularly as he does, we know we have to score one more than we inevitably concede to win points.

He may be one of the best, and my jury is still out, even after match winning performances - I can't embrace him as being one of the best in the Premiership - but I would sure like another decent keeper breathing down his neck to ensure he keeps mentally fit.

Keane and Gio stand out performances for me. Gio was good all game, good running, good work rate, I think he shwoed he can play a part this season.

keane was superb. His off the ball movement, not just for his goals but in general, coming deep, going wide, covering others, getting on the ball, this made a real difference. Suddenly the Italians did not look so solid, we pulled their midfield apart and allowed players like Huddlestone to time to spread the play.

Bit worrying that we are letting in so many goals. We cannot afford to give away cheap goals like that. Gomes and King at fault for the first goal, Gomes for a poor clearance then King for not picking up Gilardino, then the second goal the midfield let the runner go without tracking him. But once we upped the tempo we looked a lot better.

It's pre-season so I'm not too worried, but a few players who had things to prove have done so, and a few others havent.

How many significant errors did he make in the whole of last season?

Once you've answered that, ask yourself how many points he earned us in the whole of last season?

Answer= World class keeper who we really couldn't improve upon.

Exactly. To give just a couple of examples, but for Gomes, we may well not have won those crucial games v Arsenal and Chelski in April - which really saved our season.

My brief opinions on Yesterday's game.

Gomes was at fault for the first with his poor clearance.
The second goal was not Kaboul's fault, he was covering in the middle. I would have said it was down to Lennon for not dropping into RB as I don't remember him being anywhere near the bloke putting the ball in.

My highlights were Gio, Keane, Kranky and Hudd whilst my lowlights were Palacios and Pav, the rest were OK.

Jenas is not Gerrard and he never will be get over it. At the moment he is our third best central midfielder as Hudd has over took him. This doesn't mean that our supporters should slag him off at every opportunity. He is still a good player that will be useful in the next season.

If we can sell him and get a better replacement fair enough, but that goes for every player in the team. I don't understand why some people have to have a player in our squad they hate. It's the opposition players you should hate not our own.

I don't think anyone hates him, I think it's more like because this is a Spurs supporter forum issues about SPurs get discussed and players like Jenas and Zokora when he was here split opinion.

When opinion is split, because its a football forum, you get posters with differring opinions arguing their point with each other (debating I should say) and when these debates become more frequent those who do not think such a player is particularly good or good enough it could be mistaken for them making the player a hate figure but in reality I do not think it is the case its just a continued expression of opinion whilst on such a forum.

I bet you each and every poster who on here would engaged in debate regarding Jenas' form or ability would still back him 100% come the day of the match and want him to do well for the team.

Yes after the match they may feel he had a poor game and then vent their opinion on here or in the pub etc, but that is football and people would do it to any player that they feel has had a poor game.

It's just that some players obtain a reputation for it and are maybe questioned more as a result hence an average performance being labelled poor and a good performance just avergae, whilst a 'fans darling' maybe cut more slack (Lennon perhaps for example) and fans are less likely to berate his performance etc etc .

Doesn't mean these fans hate them, certainly not in the way Ghaly became a hate figure after the shirt throwing incident.

Jenas is one of seven current Spurs players who have played a hundred or more Premier League matches for us and he's also our highest scoring midfielder...

241 Ledley King (10 goals)

231 Robbie Keane (91 goals)
181 Jermain Defoe (64 goals)
146 Michael Dawson (5 goals)
139 Aaron Lennon (15 goals)
135 Jermaine Jenas (21 goals)
108 Tom Huddlestone (8 goals)

He will be invaluable to us this season, especially if we manage to make it to the group stages of the Champions League.

We could be playing somewhere around 70 competitive matches this season, so we need good quality squad players like Jenas to do their bit.

As long as they're contained within the realms of an internet forum I am not too concerned, fans are often emotional creatures and places like this enable them to vent their feelings.

As long as it doesn't transfer itself to booing and negativity from the crowd come match time it should really be a problem.

I also dare say more often than not such expressions arise from posters engaging in debates about players with other internet posters who maybe are not particularly good at expressing their views so result to such language to add dramatic effect and conclude their views.

Who knows, posters come from all walks of life here and express their views in a varitey of ways as a result, some people just make crass statements like that. As I said, it's an internet forum for fans and I would rather them do it here than at the ground. (although now I think of it I do frequently hear fans at the Lane indivdually berating a player everytime they do something remotely wrong.... not so long ago there was a guy who sat there me who seemed to have a personal vendetta against Lennon)

I seem to have pretty much defeated my own opinion here so I will just have to agree with you that I find it foolish for our own fans to make hate figures and scape goats out of our own players, but like the fans who say 'we buy our tickets so its up to us if we wanna boo or leave early' I suppose each fan is entitled to express their views and if they make Jenas a scape goat (or any other player) its just something certain fans will always do because its part of their football supporting nature..

Completely meaningless statistics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can you show me a stat saying Jenas has the highest goals per game played ratio?

I really hope we are smart enough to keep Keane and Gio after the preseason

Couldn't agree more, they played really well together. I'm so pleased that Gio is now showing his true potential. "Lovely little player" as my late dad would have said.

Great to be back at the Lane yesterday. Gio was immense as was Keano. JJ was highly average but you either love him or hate him. The Park Lane was rocking as per usual!

A bit of simple maths on those stats would show:

Lennon: 139/15 = 9.3
Hudd: 108/8 = 13.5
Jenas: 135/21 = 6.4

So easily the best of that bunch so let's look at the rest:

Modric: 70/7 = 10
Bale: 77/6 = 12.8
Kranjcar: 24/6 = 4
Palacios: 44/1 = 44

So Jenas is considerably in front of our entire midfield with the exception of Niko whose average may, or may not, get worse as he gets closer to 100 games played.

As a result of these stats arguing against Jenas based on goals scored probably isn't the best idea.

Thank you! What's your source for your statistics?

I ask because unless done correctly they are meaningless. Gimme the source and we'll do an accurate regression as to the goals to games ratio.

And if you could provide a couple of character references and a recent photo aswell we can finally put this whole Jenas thing to bed.

I reckon one shouldn't read too much into preseason matches . The 2 Keane goals were scored with an acre of space for him . The Hudd pass came through a vast hole in the Fiorentina defence .

Really it will not be like this in the Prem...EVER .

So to suddenly rehabilitate Keane on this evidence is hardly logical . If he can do it later against thug bus parkers at the Lane then great . This match doesn't give us a clue as to whether that will happen .
