He'd be fine in a three, as would PEH. Neither of them have the mobility or ball retention to play in a two IMO.
He’d be fine on the bench to keep the seats warm. No one needs to see him play cm again after tonight’s shit show

Emerson, Davinson, Davies, Hojbjerg & Winks all undone by a complete lack of composure when put under pressure. Wouldn't be surprised to see a few changes for Sunday.

Think very harsh to lump Davies in with the others. He composed himself well after his slip and was fine for the rest of the game, as he has been since moving into that LCB slot.

You want credit for suggesting one of the worst full backs we’ve ever had is slightly better than one of the other worst full backs we’ve ever had?
I don't want credit for anything. I honestly don't know why I bother if that's what you took from that post. I can't help it if some of you don't listen to what's being said by Conte himself. This is a rebuild and it's going to take time. Temper your expectations because IT'S ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT NEXT SEASON. Until then it will be up and down as we don't have a good enough squad. Conte has said this numerous times, and getting all bent out of shape isn't going to change things. Until we've had a summer window it is what it is.

Wow just watched Villa v Leeds. Coutinho was class. We can only dream about such a player. Still no doubt the manager wouldn’t want such a slow player who can’t play in defence

Can't control the game as a team and none of our CM can do it on their own like Modric and Dembele could do with ease.

Emerson isn’t good enough but it isn’t his fault that (a) we signed him and (b) didnt buy a rwb in january.

Stop buying bang average players, please.

At least we got the subs we called for :cautious:

TBH I always thought top 4 was a stretch with this lot so on that front i'm not too bothered, we are not good enough. We all accept that and we also, as frustrating as it is, have to understand that results, at some point, absolutely will reflect that. We could easily win three games on the spin and then lose a couple, that's how it's going to be between now and the end of the season.

This team will not fluke it's way into the top 4 IMO. Right now I reckon maybe 6th and given the shitshow early season rubbish that's not too bad.

But none of that eases the frustration at losing to SCBC :(
I don’t think we thought top 4 was realistic at the start of the season, but now when you see how bad the other contenders are we should have a chance. We are messing it up because our players aren’t good enough.

Have to say I don’t entirely blame FP on Royal as he came in under whatever the Nuno experiment was, if anything I blame DL for not getting Conte in the first place because we’d have saved ourselves a shed load of cash and actually had players on board who fit conte’s plans as opposed to not hiring who we should have in the first instance then appointing him six months later.
Bloody ridiculous that we’re now stuck with a lad who’s looking like his confidence is shot and who doesn’t fit how Conte sets up.
Winks can hopefully jog on at the end of the season along with Dave whilst we’re at it.
Conte was not going to take over last summer. It was too soon for him!

Many individual mistakes, but surely Conte can see that we have been -- repeatedly, many many times this season -- overrun in the midfield when we play 3-4-3.

It happened 3x against Chelsea ffs.

Just got back from the game. Obviously a bad day at the office and Southampton brought their A game.

Awful defending of sept pieces and crosses but that is nothing new with these players.

Most disappointing thing was our lack of ability to keep the ball.

Anyway first league loss under Conte aside from Chelsea, it was bound to happen eventually, we move on and hopefully bounce back with a win on Sunday.

Personally I’d mabye switch to 3-5-2 with Bentancur, Winks and Skipp when all are fit as think with the 3-4-3 in certain games we lack control of the ball.

Anyways not the end of the world,!23 are not yet the finished article, there will be bumps in the road.

Onwards and upwards.

First league loss since that other league loss

It’s one loss, we are still very much int be top 4 fight with our games in hand.

Bad day at the office, we move on.

Yeah its a hard loss to take tonight being outplayed by Southampton but it's not time to completely throw the towel in. There's a long way to go and there'll be plenty of twists and turns in the top 4 race.

We beat a good Brighton side on Saturday. We scored a couple of good goals today and could have had a couple more. It's far from the tepid nothingness of Nuno and late Jose.

That was totally down to Winks and PEH doing jack shit from the first minute onwards.

Actually thought there were some good performances out there today, notably Romero, Davies, Regi and Bentancur. It made it very clear who needs replacing/upgrading.

Fact is that you can't build a team with a non-existent midfield.
You see. I see this midfield post everywhere and frankly I don’t think many understands the game that well. It’s easy to blame the midfield and yes they’re not the best. But I will just quote @mpickard2087. Often it was 5-2-3 with Moura and Son doing nothing to help. Also our WBs in line with our CBs which leaves the midfield completely overrun and outnumbered. If anything it’s on Conte tactics.

Thought we were pretty ropey in our work, and got tactically done a bit, second half at the weekend, and tonight was more of the same so not a great few days for the manager.

People can hammer the midfielders, and yeah they're not the best players, but when we're constantly getting overloaded, 2 vs 3 or 4 every time, and they're seemingly being expected to simultaneously press the ball whilst also screen the defence and pick up the players drifting into the pocket, then whoever we put there has no chance.

You have to be careful with the 3-4-3, and last couple of games we've ended up for large spells like 5-2-3 with the cm2 getting swamped and being very slow to react to it.

Little chance now for top four. Conte has declared us to be a poor little club with little expectations and now he is proving this. Teams come expecting to boss us
That’s makes it sound that we are really brilliant but Conte is holding us back!

Time to try out 1 or 2 of our youth players who are on the fringe of the first team, if our better starters are unavailable.

So why TF were we after him? That whole scenario sums up our transfer dealings for the last 20 years.

Pointlessly chase a player the manager doesn't want whilst insulting the selling club with derisory offers, all the time frittering away days the window.
Don't believe all you read in the papers. Traore was not keen on playing as a RWB and Conte only wanted him in as a RWB. He was always waiting for Barca to make their move!

This game was a reminder of how much work Conte still has to do... and where we have to improve. We will have games like this where the old bad habits pop up once in a while... the amount of games where this happens needs to be reduced. That's the most important thing... effort and energy we can demand in every match. And we should.... it's the other things that will not happen instantly or easily... and sometimes the opponent will just be better. It's the Premiership... and please stop booing. COYS
