I really don't think this one will be close.

Just re-watched the reverse fixture which was still before we really got going under Conte.
- We were without Dier which really allowed Southampton have many more shots than they should have and made us completely unorganized for the goals we conceded.
- Speaking of goals we conceded, the first was massively down to a fluke slip from Davies.
- Winks started; we will have complete control of the midfield this time around.
- Reguilon started and missed a massive chance; Sess and Perisic will be an improvement.
- Broja and Forster are losses for them.

I think we win 2-0 or 3-0.

Can't see Davies starting tbh. He's fit enough to be part of he squad but has missed a good chunk of pre season and has a fair bit of catching up to do. Same for Bissouma.

South coast big club are in my relegation tips for the season. 6 new signings. None with premier league experience. A coach who barely kept results moving at times last year, and a horrible fan base.

I think we will stuff them 4:0.

We should be fine with Emerson v Southampton. I don't see an issue with it. He did fine at the end of the season.

My problem with Emerson is that it's still a case of that he can 'do a job' there but not a lot else. I personally after the summer was hoping we'd move away from WB's who can sort of just fill the spot. I know Emerson starting here isn't reflective of our summer window and general squad status but I still can't shake the feeling that him playing makes the wide right side a bit null and void.

I feel like he's fine if the rest of the team is playing well.

You really want players who lift those around them, not ones who need to be lifted.

The thing is with Southampton is that they press like animals. Now at the start of the season they won't be at their top level, they couldn't peak this early even if they wanted to. At the same time, I think we will struggle to get out our own half for a lot of the first hour as they suffocate Hojbjerg and Bentancur.

I can easily seeing this be a score draw. The die hard Spurs fan in me cannot accept we might start the season against one of our bogey teams with a win.

They aren’t really a bogey team. They beat us last year when we had a little bad patch. Apart from that last time we didn’t beat them at home was 2016

Even away we normally do alright

I think last season scarred us a bit, but as others have said the team was weak and defensively we were all over the place without Dier

Can’t see anything but a strong confident win

It's not a fluke that Davies slips, he slips over every game a couple of times. He struggles with balance because he's not very athletic.

That is his bad trait, slips over under no real pressure coughing the ball up, then few moves later we concede like against Mura, Wolves etc, Dier's bad trait is turning his back. These 2 were squad depth but we never invested at all in replacing Jan and Toby so they became first choice with zero competition. Cannot let sentiment get in the way with Conte here, Lenglet is a good start but we have to invest in a quality CB as a priority with 3/4 weeks left of the window.

This is 100% correct. Another Dier bad trait is him trying to hit a pass, usually with his left foot, and giving it away cheaply.

The only reason Davies and Dier are still at the club is they are good people. They've been as bad as Alli and Winks over the years but Davies and Dier say and do the right things so they've been able to survive multiple coaches. It's not a bad thing to have good people but nobody would buy Dier and Davies off us if we tried to sell them and they try hard in training so have survived a few coaches.

Since when does slipping mean you’re not very athletic? First I’ve heard as the reason players slip.

loooool

Do you really think a relentless winner like Conte would only keep and actually start Dier/Davies just because they’re ‘good people’? You clearly have a problem with them but come on, if they compromised us winning matches no way Conte would want them around, that much is certain. You need to be balanced if your critique.

I wouldn't dispute with what you said as they are facts. But to remember and associate them for these 'bad traits' is just unbelievable. I'll be keen to see if anyone shows some stats how often these so called 'bad traits' happened over the course of their careers here, because I'm very confidently to bet they were far and few. Some fans just kept impressions of bad performance longer than good ones. But most importantly Conte knows the difference between blips and habits.

Apologies if asked and answered already, do we know if Perisic starts? It sounds unlikely based on Conte's comments that he and Doherty were struggling a bit in preseason.

Yes falling over consistently means you have bad balance. Also the fact we have eyes and can see that Ben Davies isn't very athletic helps us see that he isn't athletic. Sometimes a slip is a slip but if you fall over constantly means you are just struggling to maintain core stability whilst moving quickly in different directions. If balance wasn't a part of athleticism everyone in the world would be a gymnast. Ben Davies slips over in the Southampton game becaues hes trying to do something he doesn't normally do, kick with his right foot. It's not a mistake or a fluke.

They aren't terrible players, they are average. Conte has replaced Davies with Lenglet, we tried to replace him with someone better, Bastioni Gvaridol.

There are players at all clubs that manage to hang around the place because they are good people and nobody wants to buy them. Davies is a great person, super club man, low key and gives his all when he gets on the pitch. If you read about Spurs and what happens behind the scenes Dier runs the Spurs dressing room, he's not very good as a player but is serviceable, he's shown he can't play in a 4 man defence, Conte is hiding him in the middle of a 3.

They aren't bad players, they do ok for the club as a whole.
