Martin O'Neill: Sunderland 'part company' with manager
Relegation-threatened Sunderland have announced they have"parted company" with manager Martin O'Neill.
The Black Cats currently sit one point above the Premier League relegation zone after Saturday's 1-0 defeat to leaders Manchester United.
That result extended their winless run to eight games.
More to follow.

Sunderland look doomed to me, and the TV money net year is too big to miss out on...

should have done it weeks ago. they're dropping like a stone. if i was them i'd gamble anything on staying up. anyone who goes down this season will lose out financially in a massive way and possibly not recover.

I never really bought into the O'Neill hype tbh.

As for Sunderland you'd be thinking they have someone lined up. Their run-in is extremely difficult.

when he was ppointed their were numerous sunderland legends saying he was the ONLY man for the job and that they'd not be far off the top 6... who's gonna be able to save 'em, if not martin?

I've said it before and I'll say it again - O'neill has the cold dead eyes of a serial killer.

For that reason alone I've voted 'yay'.

What has happened to Sunderland? I thought they were on the up not so long ago. Decent players, tough team to beat, especially up North. They seem to have followed Villa's demise. I haven't followed them closely enough, but has Niall Quinn leaving them had any influence?

Whoever succeeds MON he better lift them for their next game vs Chelsea.

Alas managerial change didn't do the trick for Reading v Arsenal today...

Their run in is dreadful. I won't be surprised if they are relegated before they visit WHL

A Aston Villa

I understand it, but the owners there don't know much about how to build a team either.
It is strange to see sometimes....how people can run football clubs like this.....
Football is supposed to be fun, but having a team like that is not very fun, is it.....?
Not even Martin O'Neill knows how to build a team, it seems. He has certainly not brought it many exciting players.

Never particularly liked O'Neill and hopefully this brings his inflated managerial ability to a more reasonable level akin with Allardyce, Curbishley etc.

Nevertheless, a strange and unexpected move as getting points off United was always a tough prospect - plus O'Neill is a walker so if all was not hunky dory before the international break then that was surely the time to take action.

right decision, wrong time
Is the correct answer. This should've happened in December.

No new manager has a chance of turning the tide, not with their remaining fixtures and their only goalscorer missing the rest of the season with injury. I think they'll go down no matter what.
