Really don't like O'Neill but can't think of any available manager who would have been better for the task in hand

Never particularly liked O'Neill and hopefully this brings his inflated managerial ability to a more reasonable level akin with Allardyce, Curbishley etc.

Nevertheless, a strange and unexpected move as getting points off United was always a tough prospect - plus O'Neill is a walker so if all was not hunky dory before the international break then that was surely the time to take action.

Insult to Allerdyce IMO.

Can't understand how doing it after today's match is at all beneficial to them. Surely sacking him during the 2 week break so they would have had time to appoint the new manager and get him and the players acquainted would have been a better move. They can't really have expected the team to get a positive result, and having a new manager in place for a big game could have possibly given the team a lift.

Weird decision, but I hate both O'Neill and Sunderland, so I don't care.

I think the man appearing in your signature could do a good job. He has passion for football, and a little heads up with him, he could be the right man for the job :)

One word sums up this sacking panic! Can't think of any available manger who will do a better job keeping Sunderland up.

That's a bit of a shock decision! Saying that they do look to be in big trouble, especially with Fletcher out for the rest of the season.

Not sure who they can bring in though - Di Matteo or Steve McClaren maybe?

Their biggest loss was losing Fletcher, they struggled with scoring even when he was fit. They are fortunate that Reading and QPR look guaranteed to drop, they just need to beat one other team.

For me a manager can be called whatever... the most important is that he or even she has good sense for what a good team is. That is all that matters, really. You can actually build a team out of nothing if you know how to build a team. Too many out there think it is all about the name of the manager.

Bit of a surprise to me, he has done a pretty piss poor job but O'Neill has a good standing within the game and their struggles have gone under the radar a bit.

Long overdue. They have been crap for months. Boring, expensive players. If they lose Fletcher they don't look like scoring. If they lose Cattermole, every other week due to suspension, they don't make tackles.

They have a tough run in, strange to wait until now though. Losing to Man Utd isn't a surprise but they just had a long break to do it. Losing to QPR on 9 March and failing to beat Norwich on 17 March were both very poor results. The decision could have been made on the back of both of those, with time to integrate a new manager into the club, and not losing to Man Utd courtesy of an OG.

The timing is a bit surprising but MON deserved to go. He has done a very poor job.

He took over in December 2011, they were 16th they finished 13th.

This season they've bought:

Carlos Jimenez Cuellar Free
Louis Saha Unattached
Adam Johnson £10,000,000
Steven Fletcher £12,000,000
Alfred N Diaye £3,000,000
Danny Graham £5,000,000

That's £30m on a bunch of attacking players who can't score.

The chairman probably decided to let him go before the international break and has probably been working on a replacement for the last couple of weeks. The fact that the club says that someone will be appointed in the next few days tells you that they've already got someone lined up.

Looking at their fixture list they need someone who can make them tough to beat. RDM seems to fit the bill after Chelseas champions league run last season.

TBF to McLaren he did a good job at Twente and their fans were going crazy that he had been sacked as they thought he was doing amazing considering the arsehole was trying to sell players without spending one penny tbh

He did a good job there simply because he had some good players there. He did not bring in the good players like Tiote at the time.
