I would love to see Caulker start this game, alongside Gallas or Dawson. Vertonghen could probably do with a rest. Other than that I want the strongest possible team to put us well ahead before the away leg.

Maybe start Holtby as I feel he could benefit from playing a full 90 minutes. At home to a weak side like Basel I really think the pair of Mousa and Holtby could do well in CM. Parker could probably use a rest, and we need him for the away game. Would rather not see Livermore in the starting lineup.

Friedel
Naughton - Gallas - Vertonghen - BAE
Livermore - Dembele
Lennon - Holtby - Bale
Defoe

(Walker is banned for this game remember guys)

Subs:
Archer, Caulker, Walker, Parker, Huddlestone, Sigurdsson, Adebayor
Walker's banned from playing but he's available for the bench?

All I ask is that Gallas and Friedel don't both start. One or the other, fair enough, but please God not both.

Although Spurs_Bear has pretty much nailed the team selection, in my opinion.

As much as it will annoy you, Naughton is assured to start and at least it will be in his preferred position so a more informed comparison can be made to Walker.

We had to sit through that against Fulham mate...

Couple of things to note!
  • Gallas has played in all our Europa games since he's been demoted to back-up and Dawson has become first team regular, so AVB is likely to pick him on Thursday - he's played in our last 32 & last 16 games and if I'd the choice, I'd pick him too.
  • Basel play tomorrow so a few of their team could be a bit leggy come Thursday - we need to go at them from the start and make them umcomfortable - therefore I'd freshen the team up with 3/4 outfield changes.
  • Basel are a decent team, but have lost their two key playmakers from last season in Xhaka and Shaqiri - still though they've decent quality in Joo-Ho Park (LB), Cabral (CM) & Sommer (GK) to name just three - WE MUST NOT UNDERESTIMATE THEM - they knocked Manure out of the Champions League last season with a win and a draw in the group stages!
My team for Thursday....
Friedel
Naughton Gallas Vertonghen Assou-Ekotto
Parker Dembélé
Lennon Bale Dempsey
Defoe
Subs: Archer, Caulker, Dawson, Holtby, Sigurdsson, Livermore, Adebayor.
(From Swansea XI, Walker, Daws, Siggy & Ade replaced by Gallas, BAE, Demps & JD)

Second string team my arse.

If we want to be a big club, and compete in europe and the league year in year out, then the lads need the experience of being able to handle it, simple as that.

Full strength team is required, nothing less. I want us to win a fucking trophy.
