Can we calm the prem talk. If anything, what this game told us is that our replacements are too rusty to come into the first team and do a decent job.

That is worrying.

Exactly. What does it say about our CL aspirations next year?

Harrys lack of rotation bit us in the arse last year in one way (burnout) and now it's bitten us again in rustiness.

Next season, assuming we make it, how does he tend to juggle them again if he continues with this best 11 dinosaur-style of management?

My guess is burnout again.

What would you suggest? Drop Bale for Pienaar, King for Bassong, Charlie for Walker? Would we have won the games at Fulham, West Brom if we'd have done this? I wouldn't mess about with the team as long as we're winning and have enough rest between games.

This was a good wakeup call though, we need a hundred percent concentration in all games. We can't go to Bolton and expect them to just roll over, we will need to work hard and not make any sloppy mistakes.

lol@some of the massive overreactions.

It's only the Europa League. We probably should have won ffs.

They had 4 shots in total to our nineteen and scored two goals. You can see why it's our 2nd choice Keeper and backline. The lack of any kind of apparent organisation was worrying considering Gallas was in there, but there's always the Seb factor.

'Oooh that's a lovely looking ball, all shiney and floating through the air....oh shit who's man is that? What's going on? Where am I? Why are these other guys in white giving me funny looks? What's all that cheering about?'

He is a complete fucking liability. I have no idea why he is still so highly rated by some on here, the defense pretty much always has it's uber-shambolic moments when he's involved and it's not coincidental.

The thing is while we have some decent backup none are really like for like, it's pointless putting in Pienaar on the left and expecting him to do a similar job to what Bale does, and same for Corluka re Walker.

So I think one thing Harry does need to figure out is that personnel changes can often mean that a change of system is needed too. Yesterday Pienaar was dying a slow death out wide on the left, it was painful to watch.

Maybe we need to upgrade the quality of our backup or they need to be more like-for-like as Harry tends to prefer sticking to the same system. If Krancjar is fit and Lennon gets injured he'd be stuck wide right and be largely ineffective. I think Townsend could be a very good backup for Bale as when on the left he likes to go on the outside which is similar to what Bale does. Maybe he should be the first backup for Bale when he's not available.

We were far too nice yesterday, not only did the country strike to make the Greek fans feel at home, but our defence also decided to join in the strike for the first 15 minutes of the game. :)

Our main problem yesterday was that we started with too many players who have had far too little game time this season.

The main problem yesterday was I couldn't get a kebab anywhere  Sorry, first bit of racism of the day out the way.

Yet the first goal was Gallas's fault as the root cause, then Corluka's for allowing the cross so easily.

Look how easy it is to get behind Bassong, with a tiny bit of movement on the strikers part, you can actually see Danny Rose gesticulate in frustration after the goal. Yes mistakes were made for the cross to get there in the first part, but Bassong loses his man far too frequently and costs us goals.

As seen by the second goal again.

Bassong is a root cause here. Poor marking, poor communication, just poor.

If you throw them all in at once - 9 of those players would not get in our strongest 11.

Replacements will be thrown in only in 1 or 2's at most with a team that is high on confidence. Suggesting that we couldn't play our replacements in times of injury in the Prem and still get results isn't true. We're hardly likely to replace 8 players in a Prem game are we?

I fully agree with you and was debating this with Pickard last night. The replay confirms what I thought, sorry Pickard , Bassong totally loses his man, the goal scorer.....

Yes Gallas lost the ball out of position but make not mistake Bassong is asleep there losing the goal scorer so easily....poor really poor.

His head is clearly not there, must be leaving in January for sure.

Goals we conceded were woeful

1st - Gallas gets caught dribbling with the ball, Charlie gives his man too much space and time to make a cross, and Bassong, jebus what was he doing? Just wandered away from the only man in the box, who was hardly a flipping giant.

2nd - Charlie absolutely roasted. It was like he only discovered how to walk on Monday, never mind run, then Bassong loses his man again because he didnt sense where the danger was (should have been turning/running back as soon as the initial through ball was played) and they tap in.

Attack wise we didn't seem to have a game plan at all. Rose should have been galloping forward from the off given Charlie wasn't going to overlap much on the right and Pienaar was going to come inside a lot. The strikers didn't seem to know what they were meant to be doing and in the end just buzzed around in 5 yard circles as we slowly passed the ball from one side of the pitch to the other. Second half simply made this problem worse.

I thought Harry might bring on Bale at half time, but when he did Bale should have been given the whole of the left side to attack, basically switching us to a loose 3-5-2 as PAOK had no one upfront. Then Harry brings on Walker but switches Charlie to the left!! That was a terrible move. Charlie offered nothing going forward, he wasn't overlapping as a right back, he never was as a left, he just ended up being an out ball that simply slowed us down, and when he did trundle forward he passed it off or got caught in possession.

We caught passing and passing and passing so slowly and rarely looked to cross the ball, but when we did get the ball in the box PAOK began to panic.

I thought Charlie and Bassong had terrible games. Pienaar was very poor and I fail to see what he brings to the side. I know all three need games to get sharp, and for Pienaar a good game-plan for the team would have helped the South African play better, but for players of their standing they should do better.

Rose looked determined but he doesnt have great technical ability, maybe again he needs games. Kane continues to trouble me as I can't work out what type of player he is (again, clearer attacking game plan would have helped him).

Finally, what has Townsend got to do to get a chance? He is the one youngster (excluding Livermore, who isnt really that young anymore) who has played a number of competitive games and done well, he would have offered some proper width on the left, direct running, crosses and a goal threat. Okay, Pienaar is higher in the pecking order than Andros, but surely he would be a good option from the bench? Townsend has hardly played in a winger position at all. Very disappointed in that

Also, why didn't we send Bassong up in the last five or ten minutes? He sort of went up but not as a striker, and we had Modric or Bale on the ball in a centre back position. We should have sent him up there, played diagonals from right to left. If Bassong gets on the ball we get it back in the box, if it goes over him Bale is there to get the cross in, and if they clear it we sweep up the second ball but at least have it thirty yards closer to their goal.

Bassong loses his man, but not the goalscorer, Bassongs guy runs right round the back which I guess leaves Rose (who runs back with the goalscorer side by side) in two minds. Bassongs positioning when the cross comes in is fucking woeful true, but I still maintain if Rose tracks his man all the way he can stop that goal.

I dont think either of them cover themselves in glory.

Mate he loses the goal scorer or maybe never picked him up would be a more appropriate way to look at it , never mind the other man, he's irrelevant at the point the ball is about to come in because he isn't anywhere near the danger area...which is were the midget is, who nodes in with a cup tea in his hand.

This is most definitely the next phase of play if you like and Bassong should be taking full responsibility for dealing with that cross, not Rose.
