Writing off potential cryptic answers / signings before it's even known those are genuinely targets?

It must be mid July. Only another month and a half of pointless crying, before crying from pointlessness. (y)

Where has it come out that we are after Hernandez?
Believe that it has been stated that he is not one of the cabbages, though for some reason some still say he is.

Rob has disagreed with my statement above. So does that mean -
- we are after Hernandez and he is one of the cabbages OR
- that there has been no statement dismissing him as one of the cabbages OR
- am i just getting lost in all these cabbage leaves?

It is laughable just how worked up some folk get over what are essentially total guesses as to who we may be interested in. Trust that the club know what they are doing and for your own sake calm down.
Once bitten, twice shy etc etc

Can totally understand those who lack any faith in the club in the transfer market nowadays.

Hard to deny even with some astute signings thus far and good early movement of deadwood, the window could still go either way in terms of being a success or failure.

Agree that we've probably seen more bad windows than good so the pessimism is understandable.

But with this scouting team we've had no windows at all so far. Benefit of the doubt has to be given at this point.

I think JJ mentioned the other day that Mitchell doesn't have a black box or a program.

Ok a general complaint at the inference that "Mitchell does not have a black box or a program"

The important thing that Mitchell needs to have to do his job is expertise. I would be astounded if any Premier League club doesn't have access to A1 databases supplied by one of the big data companies and with an ability to drill down into it to establish long or short lists of players that interest them. A proprietary "black box or program" implies some secret methodology to find players. If you have the expertise to look at players in this manner, then you likely have the knowledge to use data in a constructive way and add it to the traditional recruitment process, not replace- add.

So "Mitchell doesn't have a black box or a program" infers that he is less capable than we might expect, specifically because we all know about Southampton's "black box", when really there is no reason to presume this whatsoever.

Moving on from this, any focus around a supposed "black box" is mischievous given two scenarios:

1. He is thought to have a black box
Signings fail- therefore "the black box failed" "it was all bullshit" etc

2. He is thought not to have a black box
Signings fail- "he should have brought his black box" "bullshit" etc

Plenty of transfers don't pan out, whatever method you use to obtain the player. What should be focused on here is that the methods employed by the club appear to be intending on minimising the error rate in such transfers. And that, given we seemingly spent 2013 picking players from an agent's list, should be applauded.

It's pretty coherent when you remember how strongly Rob and A&C were hinting at a Mexican player. They have mentioned the Mexican colours green white and red together several times while talking about the cabbages.

"One smaller than the other" is talking about Hernandez's nickname little pea. Evans is the larger cabbage that is just green. Same grocer is United.

If it's not Evans and Hernandez I would be very surprised.

Wait, what? Evans as in Johnny Evans? The central defender? What. The. F.

If it's true that the cryptic refers to Evans and Hernandez, it makes no sense to me. Hernandez I can buy, but Evans? Eh?

We now have a plethora of decent centre backs. I don't think he could play as a midfielder effectively. So why?

Got to assume that it's not him. I hope.

Maybe one day we'll be good enough to lose to the mighty Wales.

Darren Lewis - isn't he usually fairly decent? At least among Mirror writers... Looks like this window he's called Ogbonna to West Ham, Alderweireld to us, Martina to Soton, Falcao to Chelsea...
Nah not really, I once read an article he wrote saying we would win the league.

So was Alex Song not a new link from the goat? Cameroon - Olympics etc... Njie, Song both suggested.
Only I've just seen he's been valued at only £5m by barca, a position we need to fill, experienced in PL as well as Europe, and still got good years ahead of him.

Yes but, to be fair, if you're going to do it then the transfer rumors forum is the place ?
