Chelsea first came in for him late last night. The deal is now agreed and personal term agreed. How long have we been trying? 6 months? Wow

That is what can happen when you have unlimited supplies of money and don't care how much you spend. The concept of value for money doesn't get a look in.

But in return Chelsea could just say "it's Spurs, look at Berahino, do you want to take a risk that the deal doesn't happen? We will sign you now."

We have been known to court players then leave them high and dry as we wait for the right deal. I know there's only so much we can afford but there are plenty of nearly spurs players out there (Berahino, Dembele etc).

Shame, he's quality.

Fact? Couldn't comment on what we've told Berahino, his agent or even Peace. I don't know, like I don't know with Bats, on what the dialogue and the decisions that have been made - by Spurs, the player, his current club or his agent. Everyone is doing a lot of surmising without much substance. To apportion blame in any one particular direction is silly without knowing the facts. Which of course is not uncommon on here...

The difference between having endless pots of laundered money and, well, not.

Also, we know Batshuayi wasn't Chelsea's first choice. They've missed out on someone, likely Lukaku/Morata, and moved swiftly to get their second. I hope we act the same and get Janssen/Sanabria in now.

That's not even close to comparable. Berahino was blocked by West Brom Chairman not anything to do with us and the process. Marseille have to sell him.

To be fair we have actually managed to weedle in a lot of our best players on early deals, e.g. Alli. So I'm not sure that logic holds up. Sounds more like they needed to sell, but were not so desperate as to accept a cut price offer as they know someone would splash the cash for Baty eventually. And we probably have a budget to work to given the stadium situation.

Last one from me on this. Did Chelsea suddenly have a Eureka moment and say I know what we need - MB? Stunning goal he scored at the Euros and all that. We hadn't discussed or even contemplated him before at all.

Chelsea's scouting system and the players agent must be shit if they are relying on us to do the donkey work for them and then just snaffle up players because of our interest. Within 3 hours the whole thing was finalised from conception through to just about completion? Sorry, clogging this up and I'll stop.

I disagree on the 33 million, we could go there in theory. As for the £150k - this was my point, if all he choses a higher wage over the uncertainty of Chelsea vs Spurs then i don't think he's for us anyway.

According to a Times reporter, if we were going to pay Batshuayi 150K (or close to) at least 5 other players would have seen their wages rise to match. That would easily see at least 200-250k per week increase on wage bill before you include Batshuayi. Worth it - I don't think so.

I think he's overpriced don't get me wrong, but so much for Pochettino getting backed in the transfer market. It seems like we've dilly dallied here. I don't buy the stadium money argument anymore as the league's revenue has skyrocketed in recent years. Obviously there's limits of course, but there isn't much doubt that we could have afforded this one, especially if fucking Palace can.

Anyway here's hoping we don't pull the same trick with Janssen and by some miracle have a good striker signed for pre-season. We can't afford to have the average start like we did last season.

Hold the bus there matey. We have already signed a CM that he wanted and I'm sure we will get him one of the strikers that have been identified. Not getting Bats does not equate to him not being backed.

This is all speculation as he hasn't signed yet.
My concern though if we did miss out due to Levy not having a grasp of football manager (insert your preferred year) is the effect it will have on Poch. Yes he's a professional and should get on with his job but he's also human and a very clever manager. He seems to know what he wants and if I'm not wrong his previous signings have been good. I could see this having a negative impact on the relationship between him and Levy which in turn will filter down to the pitch ............hope I'm wrong

It slightly does if he was he first choice. Getting your 3rd 4th choice on the list isn't quite the same. I don't think we should have paid 33 mill for him, but it would be nice if we all agreed we just don't have that kind of money to spend. The likes of Gayle are going for 11 mill, Deeney not being sold 25 mill. We are going to have to wake up and realise prices are so silly.

"I hear Spurs are looking at this kid from Monaco named Martial."

I feel like we've seen this bats story before...

It seems that history is repeating itself again. Last time this happened we lost out on William and signed Eriksen for half the price. It sounds like we miss out on Bats and get someone from Eredivisie in Janssen for half the price too. Considering how it worked out last time I wont be complaining.

For those suggesting we're not backing the manager, well not backing him would mean not trying to sign Bats in the first place. We can't sign everyone the manager wants and it's the same for every other manager. Will Mourinho and Guardiola try and sign the same player at some point? Most probably but one will miss out. It doesn't suggest the manager is not being backed. The transfer window is competitive and it's important for the manager to have more than one choice. As long as we get one of Pochettino's options up front he will be happy.

Does anyone else get a bad feeling with Bats? Takes the higher wage when he really hasn't done much to warrant it? I personally think we are so much better off, if he does go to Chelsea for high money, without people like that in our team. We want workers and grafters, not entitled types. The affect it would have on our loyal players such as Lloris (getting paid unders pw) if we suddenly payed someone 100k a week would be very bad IMO.

You are correct about Wanyama but it seems from the outside that Batshuayi was the most preferred of the striker targets, and was a possible deal if only we'd tried to wrap it up earlier. You are right in a sense, but is getting 2nd/3rd/4th choices backing the manager fully when the clear 1st choice is there to be wrapped up?

In some ways i'm quite glad we haven't got him as I think Janssen represents better value, but it's Pochettino's opinion that is the most important as he's the man in charge.

Poch has been a manager and in football a long time, so will know the score. We have got a first choice player picked out, but will also have some other options. As what happened with Berahino and Son last season. You just work your way down the list and mean time keep an eye out for any oppurtunities that arise. If we weren't making any kind of effort at all, then he'd have something to complain about. But so far we've had an offer turned down (Jensen) and (reportedly) we've done a lot of talking behind the scenes in regards Baty.
