Just seen the Portugal squad, didn't realise just how deep their quality goes. Wanted to see Veloso play but he's on the bench. Guessing Moutinho is the guy keeping him out, anyone know much about him? As you can tell my European football knowledge is extensive

No its Petit who is the DM, Moutinho is more of an attack-minded mid if I'm not mistaken. He has a bit more experience...

Ronaldo is flopping all over the field, seems like every time a Turkish defender gets near him the whistle blows--good to see that superstar marketing is more important than football.

Boswinga doesn't look too bad and I've been impressed with Memhet Aurelio (sp?)...

top quality goal from Pepe (well the finish was lucky but the buildup awesome). am i right in saying he is a centre back??

ronaldo has been very quiet. would have thought the so called worlds best would shine against a not very good Turkey side but nope

that dummy for the 2nd was ace (if done on purpose)

the goalscorer seemed to think his team mate meant it

keeper rushed out without hope to close him down though leaving the scorer a simple task of scoring

All in all an above average first "big tournament" day. Usually the first day or 2 in these competitions tend to roll out a few draws or the odd 1-0.

Was a bit dissappointed in the Czech Rebublic. They are a fairly good team and, against Switzerland, I expected a bit more from them. Could easily have been a draw.

Portugal looked good. Obviously they were not playing a top team but they started their tournament well. They have some serious quality in the team. Was impresed by Bosingwa but he will, of course, be no match for Dos Santos or Modric when we beat Chelski next season. Ronaldo was crap but thats no more than I expected from him. Also liked the look of Moutinho.

Still, this competition will never match the enjoyment of the world cup. Without the South American and African teams it all looks a little dull.

Anyway, roll on day 2 and a chance to see Modric !!

The Chech rep. swisarland game was a game fought by 2 bad sides. The Portugal game was fought between a good side, and a decent side. It portugal, Turkey which will make it for me to the next round!!

Not a bad opening day. Portugal and Czech didn't really get going but they'll improve. Germany and Croatia to get the wins tommorow, lets hope Modric wows the watching audience.

Some nice stuff from Portugal - I'd like to see them win it just for the way they play attractive passing football. I think Turkey will qualify as Czech Rep did'nt look to impressive.

Luka has shown he's a cool penalty taker, nice start as only 5 mins have been played.

Modric is certainly looking the part.

Did very well from the throw-in to get the ball into the box. Very cool-ly taken penalty as well.

First impressions are that he's going to be very hard to knock off the ball - we'll need that. Bright start from him. Bonus that he's not afraid to step up to take a penalty as well.
