Exactly.

The values being bandied about suggest Schalker originally wanted £2m. If we get him for £1.5m that's a reduction of 25% which is very good business.

People certainly wouldn't be arguing about us trying to haggle for that 25% off if the initial valuation was £20m for Willian.

It's a bit like saying you'd be happy to pay £3 for a Dairy Milk if someone offered it to you. It's not a lot of money but it's still a ridiculously high price.

I'd be happy to pay £3 for this one.

Its very unlikely we will get Willian IMO, but this reasoning always irks me a little (not aimed at you mate, but I've seen this a lot) Deals are valued on their own individual merits, taking a host of variables into consideration, regardless of the potential 'size' of the deal. In other words, you don't just pay somebody whatever they're demanding instantly because its not a particularly high priced deal. I could never envisage Levy abandoning his rigid business principles - no matter what deal he's working on for any amount. We/he has business image to protect and maintain and that sets a dangerous precedent for future business.
I agree 100% and I kinda think Holtby will come this window. That said, faith in a team/manager can be shown for a very small price sometimes (on a case by case basis) and still we hear of price wars.

Now, I understand negotiations and how you can REALLY screw yourself for future dealings if you just stump up money early on. However, if in the end the Holtby/January deal ultimately comes down to £300-500k either way, and it seems to be in that neighborhood, then that's the amount that the team/manager will eventually place on the faith shown to them.

Right or wrong, it's the way many people operate in a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world. They'll forget the very good summer signings and focus on the most recent window. It's the way it is. If the figure were £15-20m then I'd side with Levy. If it's £300-500k then I'd side with the players.

This also goes for the outgoing players. Desperately trying to offload them for 2008 amounts when they've only depreciated in value. All the while paying their weekly wages as they continue to depreciate. It's a slippery slope. It is. But it's one that we've seen played out for yearssss.

Don't take this as bitching about Levy. I'm a Levy guy and I'm enjoying the season. I'm more observing on his hard and fast stance on every deal when they aren't all equal in footing. Some have values that aren't measured in sell-on value or shirt sales. Some have emotional value, and if that's what costs £300-500k this window to grab Holtby then I believe that particular deal isn't worth the same steadfast haggle that a Willian or Adebayor deal would receive.

Perhaps we've come to an agreement for someone else and are about to announce a double signing. Why post one when you can post two or three!

It went up on the offical and then DL changed his mind and asked for the extra £200k to be refunded.

We can only hope that it is because they want to announce a double deal, or even more likely, want to announce at the same time that Bentley is leaving for the Arse in a 20m £ deal, just to soften the blow...
