Why the hell would I want to do that?

Look, I made the post so exaggeratedly over the top to highlight how exaggeratedly over the top your post was. If you had said you fear Liverpool will be stronger for this and finish above us I wouldn't have made comment. If you had said if were to be offered a direct bet between us and them, you would back them, I wouldn't have made that post. But the fact is, you said it as though you were sitting looking into your crystal ball, as we speak. You weren't - it is impossible for you to have a degree of absolute certainty. If it were, you would wager your house, your car, your wife, your kids, your life and everything you had, because you would know you couldn't lose. But you won't do that, so you won't back up your assertion that you are certain that they will finish above us. So, perhaps the lesson is for you to learn to speak with just a little moderation.

And jsut to be clear about this: I haven't anywhere said that I am certain that we will finish above Liverpool. I have said I don't see anything to say that they have definitively spent their money with any certitude of wisdom. I have said they will miss Suarez massively, that Gerard is coming to a termination point, that a huge number of factors all combined to their advantage, that often their results were much better than their performances and this gave them a morale boost. But I have never, anywhere, said either that they will finish outside of the top four or that they will finish below us. I have said I don't think they will have such a good season next season. I have said I think we will have a better season, next season. I have said that I believe we spent our money last summer much better than is being made out. I have said we have an excellent young squad - with a couple of omissions. I have said we have a great youth set-up, and great youth personnel and I am excited for the future, from that. But nowhere have I said either that I have certitude that we will finish above Liverpool, or that we will finish in the top four. Apart from anything, I would wait to see the rest of the transfer dealings, and even then I would be cautious because we have seen Brendan Rodgers get a Liverpool team playing, but we haven't seen how our lot will adapt to Pochettino.

But that is the whole point: I was highlighting the hyperbole of your post, and you made another hyperbolic post. Ssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

The only bet I would even consider is maybe putting a five on us finishing in the top four, and as the odds for that, last I looked were veering to 9 - 2 to 5 - 1, I might consider laying that with you - but you would have to offer me considerably better odds than that, otherwise I would be well advised sticking with the bookies. Or, you could just get the point and moderate your claims to omniscience (y)
SP you reacted exactly the way i thought you would called your bluff as it were ;).
But Ive read your post and you see something in the team/squad that frankly i dont but thats good for you to think we are a fraction off the pace but I think we are quite a bit off in reality and not able to compete with The others.
We should not be putting pressure on a manager who has only had one good year at a club who are happy just to be in The premier league and who probably have the best youth academy in the country.
I certainly wont change the way i post as I am always honest and realistic in My views on the club which not everyone likes if course but I hope it wont stop dialogue between us as you obviously dont agree.

You haven't called my bluff...at all. So how could I have reacted exactly the way you thought...at all. I never anywhere said that I am absolutely certain that we will finish above Liverpool...so why would I want a bet to that effect?

I'm afraid you don't seem to get the point I was making...at all. The point was not to call you out on thinking Liverpool are in a better position than us - that's your opinion, and that's fine (whether I agree with it or not). The point is that you are saying Liverpool will finish above us as though you know it for a fact, and not that you believe they will finish above us, which is an opinion. If you know that Liverpool will finish above us you won't hesitate to put the bet on I suggested...and by refusing to put it on, I was calling your bluff. I am happy for you to continue being honest, though I did think you slip into pessimism too much (but that is just my opinion). I do wish you would be clear that you are stating an opinion (i.e. you believe Liverpool will finish above us), and not claim a degree of certainty that you don't have (i.e. Liverpool will finish above us).

Unless, of course, you do have absolute knowledge that Liverpool will finish above Spurs next season - in which case, A, I may have a bet on myself, and, B, maybe you are an octopus (y)

Ha you never called me out once but Yes i do believe they will finish above us as will the goons and The usual suspects but seeing as you would not take the bet i will go to the bookies instead.
And by the way realism not pessimism is the way i see things but its your opinion and sometimes i am an octupus so says the mrs.

Obviously they'll miss Suarez and yes they will have to incorporate all the new players, but unlike Spurs with Bale they weren't a one man team last season.

I think their new players will have it easier as there is a good existing team there.

I know theres a lot of the summer still to go but I can't see us finishing above them next season.

Why though? I just don't understand your mindset on this. We havn't even seen what Pochettino is capable of yet...and we're writing our chances off of finishing above them?

I've a totally open mind on the matter at the moment. Lots of thing that havn't been determined yet before making sweeping statements.

Mundo Deportivo have produced a list of the most expensive players
1. Bale del Tottenham al Madrid por 101 millones, en 2013 (£86.7m)
2. Cristiano del ManU al Madrid por 94 millones, en 2009 (£80m)
3. Suárez del Liverpool al Barça por 81 millones, en 2014 (£64.4m, low exchange rate atm, would of been £71million)
4. Zidane de la Juve al Madrid por 78,3 millones, en 2001 (£45m)
5. Figo del Barça al Madrid por 71,60 millones, en 2000
6. Ibrahimovic del Inter al Barça por 69,5 millones, en 2009 (£59m)
7. Kaká del Milan al Madrid por 65 millones, en 2009 (£56m)

Its a weird one because it shouldn't because the payments weren't in the transfer but and that fee of €109million did include wages and his signing on fee iirc

With the latest, very high profile biting incident and all the question marks regarding his temper, I think this season more than any other he'll become an even easier target for rival players trying to provoke him into doing something stupid. Especially in La Liga where you're more likely to see this sort of thing, but also in a high pressure scenario like the Barca-Madrid derby.

In fact, I can already pictur that twat Pepe trying to wind him up all match, and i'd be honestly surprised if he doesn't take the bait.

We have no chance of finishing above them, Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd or Arsenal in my opinion.

Really need to take the Europa seriously but we won't

As I said there's a long way to go this Summer and I'm optimistic that Poch will improve us, but I think we are a long way behind Liverpool at the moment and I don't think we're going to bring in many new players, whilst Liverpool will add some talent to replace Suarez.

I just think we have a lot to do to be anywhere near the top 4 this year considering how poor we were last year and considering the spending power of Chelsea, City, United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Let's hope I'm wrong though.

Agree 100% but likewise hope I am wrong, you only have to look at the title odds to see how much we need to improve from last season and all those who finished above us ( bar Everton) look to be improving with their signings

Title odds - PP
Man City 15/8
Chelsea 15/8
Man Utd 11/2
Arsenal 15/2
Liverpool 9/1
Tottenham 50/1

Means nothing in terms of Liverpool compared to us though. Every season we finished above them the bookies would have them at shorter odds than us at the beginning of each season. Its because so many dumb dippers would bet on them.

So its just a pointless point you're making I'm afraid.

No one disputes that Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal are up there. Utd have only had one bad season so many won't think they're on a true dip just yet and Liverpool even when they were terrible always had short odds due to the amount of Pool fans who bet on them every year regardless of thought.

Utd have had one bad season while Liverpool have had one good season. We're pretty much on par with these clubs right now.
