I don't have a problem at all with us looking at players like Jack Clarke. We don't have anyone coming through our ranks in his position that I'm aware of who is near his level. We need a few first team starters for sure, but we also need a balance of trying to bring in prospects if our academy players aren't up to the job.

I'm with you 100%. The majority of people saying "we need to set our sights higher & stop signing young hopefuls" are indeed the same people who complain that we didn't sign superstars while they were young hopefuls.

It does my nut in too.

However, it would be bloody wonderful if our club could somehow contrive a way to sign both potential AND the finished item.
Potentially the finished item?

From what I've seen of Jack Clarke I am not convinced he has enough currently or potentially for the level we want. We have Marcus Edwards who I believe is a much better prospect...tho I could be completely wrong here.

Why not just sign Bale, or a player of Bale's calibre?
since when is it w choice between signing someone for now and someone for tomorrow?

Our team is made up both of players we signed as established stars, and players we signed to develop. I’m not entirely sure where you’ve managed to infer that investing in youth prevents signing first team players.

It's the one dimensional view that a lot of people seem to have of how things are done. How often do we hear that we're looking at a midfielder and people get all upset and say 'but we should be looking for a striker', as if each deal has to be done before we move on to the next, and we only do one thing at a time.

I am surprised there isn't more talk of Houssem Aouar who I think is the real gem in that Lyon team. Everyone is all about Ndombele deservingly so, but Aoura is a significantly more versatile and dynamic midfielder and 2 years younger. I would actually put him in the same bracket as Frenkie de Jong ability wise with more offensive instinct.

We need proper ball carriers, from different areas of the pitch. Dembele made us tick because he was able to beat his man and have other players collapse on him opening others up. Unfortunately, Dembele just wasn't deadly enough with either the pass or shot, which is something Aoura is.

My ideal 3 targets would be Atal, Aoura, and Zaha. The versatility of these players allows us to be dangerous on the counter and break down stubborn defenses due to players that are capable in 1v1 situations.
Aouar sounds an ideal target according to your description, thanks for sharing.

As someone who is not well versed in how clubs' scouting structures are set up, how aware would our club / scouts be about players like Aouar, and what would it take for that awareness to translate into actual interest? Would Poch have regular meetings with a transfer committee and then have a shortlist of key targets video presentations made by a head scout? One would hope that prospects like Aouar get the visibility within our hierarchy that they deserve

I think it comes down to which youth prospects/youth finished articles we're alleged to be looking at signing.

De Ligt - 19 years old, Ajax captain. Absolutely world class. No brainer.
Ryan Sessegnon - 19 years old, only reason we seem to be looking at him is that he's home grown. Not good enough for our LWB slot IMHO and not good enough for our attack IMHO - no one knows where he'd play. I realise many have a different view on Sess.

Either way, making a signing like Sess, means we'd be unlikely to go after a player like Telles or Grimaldo - a mistake IMHO.

Wouldn't mind someone who can hit a deadball, when's the last time we scored from a direct FK?

As much as I love Eriksen, someone has to take him off responsibility for direct free kicks which almost always seem to hit the wall. We have others who can hit a deadball... Kane when fit would demand to take it, but otherwise we know Trippier has the technique, and we haven't seen Moura given more chances after he scored a belter in pre-season against Girona

If our scouts aren't aware of Aouar, they should be sacked.

My main worry for this summer is that I think we have a simultaneous need for reinforcements at quite a few positions. There are very interesting players who might be available for each position, but the risk is that the club opts for too little quality to cover too many needs at once.

If, and it's a big if, we can re-sign Toby and Eriksen then 3 players and perhaps a 'young-un' would see us into 19/20.

If not, then yeah, it's going to be difficult to get 5 or 6 good players in.

Danger of 'running to stand still'.

Agreed. Keeping Toby and Eriksen (at least for next season) would be massive. I really really really hope Poch and Toby can put aside whatever issues they have. ? And if no one comes in for Eriksen and he commits to us that'd be great too.

We'd then need around 4 signings instead of the probably unachievable 6.

RB
2 CMs
AM or a forward type player

We also need a left back but I suppose that can wait.

Btw, when does the summer transfer window open?

Two articles on wiki state it's May (17th) to August (9th).

Seems a bit early, but then Manchester Evening News has it as 1st July, which seems way too late.

And the PL official site doesn't seem to list the dates at all.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfer_window

https://www.manchestereveningnews.c...s/2019-summer-transfer-window-dates-157586567

June 9 or July 1 are the important dates, international transfers can't be complete before then (depending on league).

If Toby leaves, we will need replacement. I am not convinced about Foyth and Sanchez to play full time yet.

Would love 2 CM but we could get away with signing just one.

We really need to make a statement this summer!
