People talk about there being better players or that we should be looking at a better class of player but I say follow the Everton example, they buy gritty, no nonsesense players and it appears to be working for them.

remind me again of our league position?

strong physically, mobile, good passer, good tackler, willing to get stuck in.

For a midfielder to have these qualities, and supposedly available for £2million, I'd snap him up as he'd be a good value signing.

(his wages may be a problem but I'm sure that can be negotiated down)

you might also need to consider, we were more successful in the cups overall.

Plus none of us want to be like everton.

What I'm saying is sometimes it's good to have a good mix and a few no frills players - like Everton do with the likes of Jagielka, Cahill & Carsley (mixed with flair players like Arteta, Fernandez & Pienaaar). Sometimes it's good to get a low-rent battler to complement these players.

We did better in cups overall - yea 1 cup, the one we won. But it's harder to be consistent in the Premier league than it is to win a cup - a cup can be fluked.

Im not convnced he would do a good job for us, I could see him ending up on the bench and be another expensive highly waged squad player.

I hope that this summer brings in more quality players ready to have an instant impact on our first team and some of our current first team players become the squad players fighting to get in. (as well as a few decent youth players perhaps)

I could be wrong, but lots have players have looked good at smaller clubs during one premiership season and gone on to do not so much at a bigger club. (Am I right in thinking Sidwell had a single good year with Reading in EPL?)

Not when you play Ar5ena1 over two legs in the semis and then play Chel4$ki in the final it can't!

yea it can, you're not telling me Barnsley did better than Everton because they got further in the FA Cup and beat Chelsea and Liverpool on the way.

not to mention man city (11 straight wins at home at the time) away and boro at home

tho I also take the point that some 'Everton-type' players like Sidwell and Jagielka might be good

Indeed I and others mentioned Jagielka on here last year - only to hear all the old guff (heard it so many times - see Barry for example when we could have got him at a reasonable price) - not good enough - not top 4 - won't take us to the next level - blah blah -

I don't care - will he improve the squad - will he improve the team - yes he would have (as wouid have Barry) - the finances are something we don't know - but I guess at a free and not top whack wages Jagielka was affordable

I'd be happy if we signed him. Have mentioned him in a couple of threads over past few months and included him in my defensive midfielder poll.

A tough holding midfielder who gets stuck in, scores his fair share of goals and has a nice pass on him.

What is this negativity about - he'd be an ideal player for us to provide the steel!

no he's more saying drop the cliches and judge things individually, on thier merit. In the specific case of our cup win it wasn't a fluke. It was a roaring stampeed of well earnt results and no small measure of sexy football against very good teams.

Were the same type of things said about Parker when he both left Chelski for the money of Toon, and then did crap for them and left them for the money or Wet Spam? He was linked with us before he made both of those moves. every player is different i know and maybe Sidwell will want to prove himself again but Parker certainly hasn't

That as maybe, but my point still stands that Everton have been 'better' and more consistent than us this season, with less 'flair' players.

Yea some people last year laughed off the notion of signing Jagielka, because he wasn't going to take us to the next level, well we're nowhere near that next level, and yet Everton were on the brink for most of the season...

I think sometimes people need to see past the big names and take note that some of the gritty players can be the difference between failing to hold onto a lead or grinding out a win.
