I seem to remember some kind of story that we annoyed the dembele kid by trying to sweeten up his parents or some such malarkey and that he was not impressed at all with us ?

Doubt It was a dream as my dreams usually include kate bekinsale and jam

Didn't we miss out on Aubameyang because of pissing around with the fee too?

Easier said than done but I feel we need to act quickly as the pickford deal shows that this summer the costs for even hang average players is going to skyrocket and will only get worse the later the window goes on.

If we don't get him, for circa £30m now, when the likes of Troy Deeney are rumoured to be worth that it could end up this kid costs nearly £50m.

Of course there will be the odd gem that represents value but if we are gonna go for a real top player we need to get going.

I thought that was Aubameyang and us speaking to his father?

But the thing is we're predicating Lemar's quality on his performances in the same league that GKN performed well in and had he stayed another year at Marseille, could've possibly matched or performed better.

I just don't see the appeal in buying Lemar when GKN hasn't been given an opportunity. Especially as we're dealing with players who share similar playing characteristics and while GKN has the benefit of having a year with Poch and his training/ethos.
Lemar performed way better in the French league than GKN.
5 goals 2 assists for GKN in 2015-16.
9 goals 10 assists for Lemar in 2016-17.

And Lemar was a key piece of the team that broke PSG's reign in Ligue 1, went into UCL semis, and he's now in the french NT (GKN is and was nowhere near the NT).

Might have been
I'm getting on a bit now my memory obviously isn't what it used to be
How could it be with all that leftover beckinsale-jam rotting in there?

We did indeed piss off Aubamayang and his father and PEA was quoted as saying he would never play for us. He never said what we did but we were in the driver's seat on an 11M xfer from St Etienne.

We screwed up the 1.5M xfer for Dembele from Rennes because at the last moment we declared we wanted him to do a trial (2 week maybe?) before committing. He balked and now it is all history. I believe this was the spring of 2015 so his talent was there for all to see.

So before the summer he went to Dortmund? Because I'm sure I remember reading we wanted him then.

I think we did want him then as well but had a chance to get him before he blew up at Rennes and for a very small fee, like a couple of million or something.

Almost rather have not known those things.

I thought we just went cold on the deal when we realised we still had other options. We talked up the deal, got him on board and made some promises, then totally dropped contact. Essentially we lost focus and he didn't like that, the excitement dies away and then Dortmund came in, they didn't piss about and he didn't give us another look once that happened

He said we got weird with his Dad, if I remember correctly. Upsetting a players family in negotiations is never going to be a winnng tactic.

As for Lemar, what I liked about him last night is that not only is he quick (although not compared to Dembele and Mbappe!) he is a player that always has his head up, uses the ball well and looks to whip in dangerous early crosses. He might not have the insane trickery of Dembele but he's well out of our reach now. I really think Lemar would be a great signing.

He does look neat and tidy. Reminds me of Willian in his style . The only thing that concerned me from last nights performance was him getting completely outmuscled by raheem sterling!

Is he gonna be able to handle the epl?

Sterling has a low centre of gravity, leverage innit? ( I hope)

More like he was off balance and Sterling anticipated the contact, our players were bouncing off him at wembley so I wouldn't be too concerned with that ;)

would be a real statement of intent if we could pull off the Lemar deal. He's probably the only gettable player for us from Monaco as for whatever reason no other oligarch clubs seem to have eyed him up yet. as others have said - my concern is at what point do Monaco decide they are no longer selling their players... Silva already gone. Sidibe, Bakayoko, Mendy all rumoured to be off too. Even Fabinho.
