L'Equipe apparently saying tonight Lemar fancies Arsenal move because of Wenger's previous success with French players. Exactly as I said about a page ago. Sucks being so bloody clever! Lol.

Daily star reports it tonight, but the original piece from L'Equipe is from this morning. So basically nothing new. Don't know French though.

I don't think you realise how feted Arsenal are in France, mate. Even with their league drought they are sill picking up FA Cups, and Wenger gave them the core of their greatest ever team in Vieira, Petit, Pires, Henry. Their name still rings out in France.
No offence meant but the names you cite are very old now. I think for all continental footballers there are new names in the game. You either take the dollar or you are young, have a really good agency behind you and play the long game.

Look, those names are old, but the period of Wenger and the success, has built Arsenal a massive following in France and a level of respect over the years. That doesn't just dissolve overnight. For many people in France they are the French club of England. I've got family who live over there and have spent plenty of time in France, Spurs hardly ever get a mention in footy chats compared to Le Arse.

This isn't to say all French players want to sign for Arsenal, just that they do have a level of cache over there that we don't. The same as Chelsea with West African players because of Drogba - who was the icon over there.

You're placing way too much emphasis on past reputations. Kids in the game, backed by aggressive agents/agencies are going on what's happening currently, not 20 odd years ago when these kids were still in nappies.

As I say, wages are the crux. We love to think everyone views the project here as positively as we do, but we're still a relatively small ripple continentally.

they might of been in nappies, but their parents weren't, and even their agents are most probably of an age that would of followed a team in the PL. we are the biggest league in the world, and if these players can't get immediate transfers too the Barca's, Real Madrids or even Bayern Munich then if they are going to move abroad the PL is where they would like to try because the money involved, and due to their parents might of had an interest in our football.

Tbh i wish we'd just go all out for a good player like lemar. We pissed £30m on sissoko ffs so we have the money. It gets annoying when we spend an aggregate of £50m on two or three average players instead of that amount on one really good player. We won't improve the team otherwise

We have spent big money on player likes him though. Lamela, Son and Eriksen are prime examples. Sisokko is not the norm and we shouldn't pretend he is.

Bernardo Silva cost 70m and Mendy 40m. We are not getting Lemar for 35m
The thing is Mendy joined Monaco last summer for 10/15M€, so it makes sense selling him for up to 40. Lemar joined Monaco 2 years ago for less than 4M.

Shouldn't we be signing the Monaco scout instead. Instead we had Paul Mitchell who wasn't a resounding success with his choice of French players.
Nothing wrong with Mitchell's first choice of players. Problem was Spurs not pushing through the deals for the players he scouted.

That is THE problem. You can employ the best scouts in the business, if Levy keeps baulking at negotiating-table it'll all come to naught...

Id really like him but I think there would be others in for him should he be available. Arsenal and Chelsea in this country to begin with.

The wages issue is a hard one. We could probably double the wages he's getting in France quite comfortably, which would usually be more than enough for us to sign him. But if the two clubs mentioned above fancy him then they could offer more. Thats not to say they would though obviously. They might want him but might not be willing to pay him more than we are.

Don't forget that Premier League clubs can only increase their wage bill by £7 million a year. If Arsenal manage to resign Ozil and Sanchez then they might not be able to pay any new signings massive wages anyway.

That rule means they can only put £7M of their TV money towards increasing wages. Any other commercial revenue can be used as they want. In effect, there is still no restriction on how high wage bills can go for the top 6 teams.

I originally put that they couldn't increase year on year wages by 4% as I thought that was the rule but found that so put that in (making my point void actually). No idea where I got the 4% from but I think thats true too.
