NZ - Japan looks like it’s going to penalties.

Edit: it is going to penalties.

Edit: we’re shit at penalties. Shame.

Probably the most exciting race I've watched this Olympics, and I knew the result before.

I love the fact that you can match up women against men in the first leg, it leaves the whole race entirely open until the last leg has been swam(swum?).

This is a new race right? Don't remember it in previous Olympics... Same goes for the mixed relay.

I like you think it is great you can mix and match. I didn't realise you can do that... I watched the mixed relay yesterday and saw Nigeria rinsing it in the second lap against the women and didn't realise the guy was a dude until they handed the baton... Didn't realise you can mix and match until yesterday but makes it an enthralling race.

Makes it really tactical. US got it badly wrong, no matter how superhuman Dressel is.

loved the swimming this year. some amazing individual performances. with the us down a bit, it mean a little bit more exciting. mckeon was awesome, obviously, but great to see sjostrom do well after her horrific injury, and the new canadian girl (name escapes me atm). on the men's side, was delighted to see the brazilian lad get a bronze and dressel is just a powerhouse. great stuff altogether.

 Not surprisingly it was good enough for gold.

Those tricks were absolutely incredible.
Hopefully more funding goes into these “lesser” Olympic sports for GB as they are the sports that get the attention of the everyday person.
They are the sports that every kid/teen can get involved with a minimal cost.

I feel the whole DQ process for a false start is harsh - perhaps have a yellow then a red card type thing. But it is what it is

Just watched that. Amazing tricks. Her rival hannah roberts folded under the pressure of charlottes run.
Not sure she crumbled as such.
She just put everything into the first run in order to post a score that should have been unbeatable.
She probably then switched off a little ahead of Worthington’s second run, thinking she had it won.

It is harsh but it makes sense. Under the old rule, if an athlete false-started, the entire field was given a warning, and the next person to false-start would be disqualified but the problem with that was runners who are slow out of the blocks intentionally false-started in order to put pressure on competitors who are fast starters.

Also, a yellow, red card type thing wouldn't work given the tight schedule athletics operates on.

I appreciate it was a lovely gesture for the Men's high jump gold medal to be shared, but I can't help but feel their achievement will always be tainted with an asterisk.

Wow, wtf?
Not dissimilar happended to Princess Charlene of Monaco. She tried to leave Albert, fled for Nice airport, French police picked her up and returned her to the Palace where she was cooerced into a deal to not leave him. This was about 7/8 years ago. True story from the horses mouth

Karsten Warholm absolutely obliterated his own WR by almost 0.80 seconds in the 400m hurdles. He beat 2nd place Rai Benjamin (who also ran faster than the previously standing WR) with relative ease. Genuinely one of the greatest performances in Olympic track history

Warholm won gold in the World Championship in London four years ago with 48.35, and now ran 45.94. It's insane how he and Benjamin have driven each other to push the boundaries in what was for a long time one of the least "cool" track events. Such a shame it was on in the middle of the night for European viewership.
