I agree.
Also I think our defence collectively got its self in a muddle today with Kaboul being the chief culprit.

Don't blame just our defence, our midfield and goalkeeper didn't cover themselves in glory either defensively.

Would someone like Schneiderlin make a difference. I don't think so. We need creativity, intention. Not another engine in midfield.

Yes.
So much of what Pochettino is trying to do is based on rapid transitions of play. Schneiderlin was pivotal to that and gets Poch's system.
If we can get him, it doesn't necessarily mean the changes would be apparent overnight (i.e. in games like today's), and it wouldn't just be about Schneiderlin, other players need to fit the system, too. But there is a reason Poch wants him, or someone similar (like this Stramboli fella we supposedly have lined up as a replacement).

Come on mate, we'll easily finish above Swansea, and we have looked much better than Man U.

I'd be surprised if we don't finish 6th.
We'll that's probably the best we can hope for - as i said in my original post.

We need a proven PL striker and a better attitude from some of our star players (Mr Vertonghen mainly) before that happens.

I just wonder if our current transfer situation had an affect on players attitudes. Lets face, 90% of our players have a for sale sign on their head and maybe alot of them were wondering where they will be playing next week, cant do much for their confidence or care factor.

I'm not making excuses but just wondering how we can go from being so good to so bad.

We were not that good and are not that bad.

I'm still gutted now. Kaboul was terrible today...everytime he got near the ball my heart sunk. He's just not the player he was. Such a shame. I don't have the level of trust I used to have of him. Bring on Fazio.

Pooch spoke about the team still learning the 'philosophy', but that goes for him too.
Such a comprehensive hiding probably indicates we got the formation wrong.
He was out thought from the start imo and made no correction.
This was one of AVB's faults too - he could not change the plan.

The difference hopefully is that rather than being totally arrogant,
Pooch has never managed a squad of internationals before who in theory are capable of seamlessly switching to a plan B.
He needs to learn fast as the better sides will just work us out, adapt and punish us.

As others have said, this was Poch's third game in charge. Players aren't up to speed with his methods, players aren't available and the transfer window isn't closed yet. Look forward to things improving.

Really?

Stupid me for thinking he'd toured the U.S. and Europe with these very players.

I accept that it's really early days, but let's cut out the bullshit er'?

I accept that some WC players came back late but all in all Poch has has sufficient time (ten games in all, plus training time?) to establish that players like Kaboul are cannon fodder to forwards with pace.

He is from what i have seen the right man for the job but he shouldn't escape some criticism based on time served.

4-4-fucking-2 is always the answer apparently... Until we play it and get raped.

I don't think there is any need whatsoever for that term being used when discussing a game of football. Call me old fashioned but if your too illiterate to put together an argument without using the word "rape" as way to describe a defeat, then just do not post at all.

If you want to know why we struggle against the top sides, just look at how many goals we've scored against them: 2 goals in our last 9 games against Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and City. We had one shot on goal today.

Our issue last season was we simply didn't score enough goals. It's a wonder we still ended up with 69 points. Since then, what exactly have we done to add goals to the squad? We've lost Sigurdsson, and have brought in ZERO attacking players up to this point in the transfer window.

Pochettino is a good manager, but he's not a miracle worker. If Chadli or Lamela get hurt and Lennon or Townsend have to start on the wings, we're going to be in huge trouble.

If we simply didn't want to engage in any type of net spend, then we should've gone for experienced winners. Eto'o, Song, Cambiasso all could've been had for no transfer fees. All are good enough to potentially start for us, even as they are getting on in years, and they would've added a shitload of experience and title winning guile.

Im glad you said in theory because in reality these so called internationals have shown that they have the brain capacity of a 10 year old. The lack of football intelligence at times is shocking.

Kaboul had the first touch of a horse today, embarressingly heavy first touch for a professional footballer, he gets caught out of position as well. Also adebayor we have to depend on him and its not a promising sign as it depends on which Adebayor turns up, he was poor yesterday. To many players making safe sideways passes instead of looking to get the ball forward quickly. He may make someloose passes sometimes but at least Holtby will do this so I dont understand why we hardly play him and seem to be thinking of letting him go while keeping lots of other midfielders who are basically the same.

But a world class striker wouldn't have stopped lamela losing the ball 50 times, lloris unable too kick a ball to a spits player, Dier very poor, Kaboul terrible, Townsend shocking. The list goes on. We've got far
More problems on other areas for me

Agree, but a top quality striker would've put their defence under pressure whether we had the ball or not, Ade is just not good enough. One of the reasons our defence was quite poor was because of liverpool's front players working their bollocks off to press, their technical abilities and their movement off the ball when in possession. That said, I didnt quite undestand why Poch only played one up top against a 442, we really should've bossed the midfield, but they just walked thru us on the break!!

I finally managed to watch some of the game last night. Admittedly not the whole thing so my view might be skewed by not seeing it all but after watching I am more optimistic about us.

The first half could have ended evenly. Ade missed a big chance after they scored when their defence was easily cut open. Chadli too missed a golden opportunity when we cut through them like a knife through butter. Maybe this is the problem right here our failure to finish, to take the chances when they come.

In the second half we conceded right at the start. Lack of focus, lack of experience on the part of Dier. This did though change the game making it comfortable for Liverpool to sit back in numbers and hit us on the break which is how they play best. Of course they tightened up with the pressure taken off and the support of their more defensive minded three in midfield for their defence. What I did not see was us giving up like we did many times last season when under the cosh and that bodes well for the future

What we learnt: 1) We really have to start every game on the front foot, prepared for battle and keeping everything tight for the first 20 mins 2) We need to find someone who is a prolific finisher, who needs few chances to score...good luck there! Overall we need to finish far better 3) We need to let the younger and the less experienced players in the EPL learn in these early months under Poch. Dier even playing out of position looks good and he will learn I am sure. Lamela has played very few games in the league and will get better. Others like Bentaleb could use a good loan in order to gain the necessary experience 4) We need to consider our tactics a bit more...a 4-3-3 matching up 'pool would have made sense yesterday at half time 5) We have a lot of decent players and some quality. We need now to go for less quantity and real upgrades when we buy...or else don't buy
