I like the idea of signing Richards. I quite like it when we get linked with players that were massively over hyped in the past. It seems that if these players don't go on to become world stars within a few years, then they are considered useless, which is ridiculous. Richards might not be the amazing talent that everyone thought he was going to be, but he can still be a very good defender and now will cost way less than he would have as a 17 year old. It's the same with someone like Ryan Babel and almost certainly will prove to be the case with Lukaku. If we signed or were linked with Walcott are fans wouldn't be happy, but he's really not that shit. He's just not the player everyone thought he was going to be, but he certianly still has somehting to offer a top club and is only 21. At the age of 18 Glen Johnson was sold to Chelsea and played for England. 4 years later he was considered total shit, didn't play for Engalnd and was sold to Portsmouth. Yet he's since firmly established himself as Englands number 1 RB and was sold to Liverpool for £18 million. Yet when there were rumours here that Jol wanted to swap him for Chimbonda (when Chelsea were after him), our fans were very much against it.

Very good post Joey, and I was one of the few who wanted Glen Johnson aswell.

Also Walcott isn't a bad player. He is exactly where Lennon was at 2 years ago. Pace and no end product. it just shows that with good coaching that will materialise. With patiance Walcott be get there, he just had alot of hype early on and I blame alot of that on Sven.

Richards has the potential to be a great defensive player, like others have said he is certainly at least at the same level Dawson was at his age, if not slightly higher.

With the right coaching he could become a regular international CB/RB in 3-5 years.

I agree that he has been the victim of the hype and pressure that Sven thrust upon him, but, Lennon was NEVER as bad Walcott! Lennon always had the ability to beat players, to pass the ball, to retain possession and make sensible decisions. Walcott has none of this and basically has just one trick, knock the ball 40 yards ahead and run after it!

Lennon has added end product, he can use both feet, he has some skill, he doesn't have to beat his man every time, and he works his bloody socks off!

Lennon is on a different planet to Wallnut in my opinion!

Why?

10 good games once about 3 years ago Richards is like an even worse version of Kaboul. He's athletic but simply has no brain.

Would be a downgrade on Bassong or Hutton.

I think that guy is dwain, who is also on COYS. I've seen him pass on a bit of ITK in the past, but didn't realise he was a WUM until the guys on here said. Always seems pretty genuine over there.

What stood out most about Walcott in the England games was his lack of confidence. Even with no end product, Lennon would still run at players and was never afraid to take people on. Walcott was doing it a couple of years ago, but now his confidence is shot and he isn't make those runs as often.

I would say Richards is in a similar situation. He was being hyped up by Man City a couple of seasons ago. A poor run of form, and he's on the bench. He just needs an arm around the shoulder and I don't think he'll get that at City now. I see him as a player Harry will make a home for and boost his confidence again. Similar to what happened with Johnson.

I think Micah could be a top right back with his pace. Then I'd like to see Charlie groomed for the CB role to replace Woody.

Other way round. I think he's a covering CB. I would never want 2 Richards at CB but him with a CB who owns a brain would be ideal. Games with Ledley and then eventually a partnership with Dawson.

I agree he'll get games at RB but ultimately i think he's a CB waiting for the right club. circumstance and manager to get it out of him.

MrBoomBarraKoomba is dwain on COYS and he is still somewhat deluded. Comes out with absolute crap sometimes but because it's COYS he gets praised for it, which is no bad thing, just not my style

thanks for passing on

I think he has all the attributes to be a great player but just needs that bit of time to harness his potencial and turn him into a great CB/RB. If Harry could do it with Kaboul I think Richards will be a walk in the park.

Good signing if it happens
Bottom line is, whomever Harry picks, at this point we have to trust his good judgment and back him and the player up with good wishes!

We don't need any defenders, other than a young understudy CB (assuming Woodie doesn't come back)

LB - BAE, Bale
CB - Daws, King, Bassong, A. N. Other
RB - Charlie, Kaboom*, Walker

*(I know Kaboom's 'officially' a CB, but he was streets better at RB.)
