I would have been okay with this until I heard Subotic being bandied about. Now it feels like we are buying a second hand bike rather than a Audi R8. And fuck being green. I want a fancy car.

Don't understand people thinking we don't need help on the back line, King can't play twice in a week so he is not able to be counted on, Woody might never play again and that leaves us with Dawson and Bassong, which if either gets injured we are stuck using players way out of position, Corluka is not good at center back and neither is Hudd so lets get another one, there is also Kaboul but I don't rate him as a centerback and really only had 1 or 2 good games at right back so hard for me to pin our hopes on him if Corluka gets injured. one who also fills a homegrown quota as well for a decent price and hope Harry develops him.

I would also not mind giving him a shot at right winger if Lennon gets injured, he is fast and isn't a horrible crosser of the ball, would provide great cover for Corluka like Bale does for BAE as well. Would rather he be given a shot there if Lennon is hurt than watch Bentley again if I am being honest.

i remember the first game I saw Richards play was against us in his first season and he played a blinder in the defensive midfield role - at the time I thought he looked like a potential beast and that we should pursue him...

I forgot how quick he is. I still think we have enough defenders though: -

RB: Corluka, Naughton, Walker (Kaboul)
CB: King, Daws, Bassong, Kaboul, Dervitte (Corluka, Sandro, Hudd)
LB: BAE, Bale (Bassong, Naughton)

Not included Woody cos he is out to pasture

I think he would be a good acqusition but just not sure he is needed. Would rather the money be put towards a Striker!

I too think we have enough defenders and defy anyone who believes we need to stockpile just because we're in the chanpions league. The traditional top four don't, so why all of a sudden do we?

Although in saying this I do think bringing in richards with his pace at right back will give us more options. This is because with Lennon being out for half of last season the right hand side of corluka/bentley was pedestrian. If you bring Richards in atleast this adds some pace and will give Bentley more time and space to pick out crosses.

A good point and would give continued pace down both sides rather than just the left in Lennon's absence.

I would start Richards at right winger if Lennon was injured with Corluka backing him up. Would give us a bunch of pace and he will be able to cover for Corluka if he gets too far forward on the oppositions counterattack, another reason I think Bale should stay at left winger, gives us a very solid defense as the wings get covered very nicely with Bale back there tracking back and being comfortable putting in tackles and staying in a good position.

Just think about it like this, and I don't hate Bentley but he is not the best defender and adding Richards in there would give us good defense, especially on set pieces, one of the few areas we are weak in when Crouch isn't playing(which should be a lot next year if we upgrade on the forward position)

Too right.

Two (or maybe three) summers ago 'Bonjourno', a highly-rated ITK, revealed that Richards was a done deal for £14m. He hasn't been heard from since. Richards' value has nosedived since then, too.

I wouldn't say no, at around £7m, except that I'm not entirely sure where he'd fit in, especially as Kaboul has now returned to the fold. And as DP says, he's really not in the same league as Subotic.

Personally I think Onouha might be a better option.

My overall problem with Richards is he's a terrible defender.

In all fairness there aren't many defenders in Subotic's league.

There aren't, and none I can think of at that age.

Richards has pace, a good deal of it, but not a lot else. In fairness, one could have said the same of Ledley and Big Tone at the same age—the difference being, neither had received the degree of hype that Richards has.

It's difficult—I thought Dawson got wildly overrated in 2005-2006, and even a year ago I was wondering if he was good enough—as were many others. Now, unless you demand absolute perfection, he's as solid a CB as you could find. Could Richards develop too?

I cant see why not and he will get the chance to learn from 2 of the finest English defenders in recent years at us (woody and king). At £7m he is well worth the punt as opposed to paying double that, if not more, for Cahill.....

Cahill in my eyes is vastly over rated. Solid but not spectacular.

The overall problem with Richards is his attitude and I would make a guess it's one of the reasons why he hasn't had a look in recently with England.
His positional sense his poor. He has pace, but sadly not much else to back it up.

If we do sign him, then he really couldn't be in a better pair of hands. Richards is the type of player that Redknapp loves to work with and prove people like me completely wrong.
