Do we agree that VDV was at least striving, straining, to trap the ball with his chest? If that was the case, then even if the ball inadvertently touched his arm, would that not mean that the contact was not deliberate?

It would still be a free though, I think, a bit like a player who has his hands out but doesn't intend to handle the ball

it's a wonder sky didn't "dissect" it more, with replays and zooming and slowing down and what not.

I personally think it probably was handball, but it is all academic now anyway

From where i was sitting in block 10 of the west stand yesterday i could'nt tell if it was handball or not.

After seeing the replay quite a few times since, i'm still not 100% convinced that it was handball

If it was handball the ref would have given a foul and there would have been more protests from the Arsenal players and management

Some Arsenal fans and the media are making this out to be Thierry Henry part 2, ridiculous really

I think you're right. It's an odd one though, because while the law states that it has to be deliberate for it to be handball, we all know that if you try to control the ball with your chest but it hits your arm then it's a free kick.

What I find absolutely laughable though is the old chestnut trotted out that if it was a handball then it should have been a yellow card. No, that's not the rule. The punishment for a handball is a free kick; it has to involve unsporting behaviour for it to be a yellow card.

As Dharmabum said, it was simply a piece of sublime skill on VDV's behalf. Great shot too.

I was in the North Stand upper tier and I can definitely say it wasn't handball. :)

However I was worried he was going to get booked again for that celebration!

The funny thing was when Alan Smith sat there and said 'I don't understand how he could bring the ball down at that angle' and God replied 'It's pretty easy to bring a ball down with the apex of your chest/shoulder joint' at which Smith looked completely bemused.

I love how he moaned about the ball for Walker's goal as well, bitter old twat...

Wenger lost the argument when he claimed that rather than a goal, VdV should've been sent off.

'twas goal in we deserved to score in a game we deserved to win.

Had and have a definite feeling that it was a handball, though replays are inconclusive and the ref can't see for sure and shouldn't make the call. Still impressed he didn't, though, even if he didnt handball his arm was raised so ref must've been tempted to make the call. I was also getting concerned about the celebration and him being sent off..

I've seen some replays, it genuinely looks like he brought it down with his chest to me. I'm not bothered either way, personally. But the Goons have bugger all to complain about, it was a legitimate goal.

And they should realise that: you know you've been shit when you're clinging to stuff like "he handled it" or "he should have been sent off for his goal celebration" as consolations. Sounds like us Spurs fans circa the late 90s, early 2000s!
