We are too good for a player like Shane Long

The problem with our strike force is that we have nobody running onto Adebayor's flicks.. Long is a prime example of a quick smaller man who would be a threat in a 4-4-2 formation. I think he is vastly underrated and his goalscoring record reflect that of a player who is playing for a lesser club. He can easily be a 1 in 2 goal scorer he has an abundance of talent, he's quick, good in the air, got a cracking leap, good movement, good first touch and can finish.

I think you have to give Gus Poyet major credit for turning Johnson back into the player many thought he could be. I think he could do the same for Lamela, who's a similar player IMO, maybe even more gifted. Poyet would certainly be a major contender for our next Manager if it was up to me, with the added plus of, along with Taricco, both being former fan favourites at The Lane.
It is a bit hilarious that on 1st January if you had drawn up a list of 100 players in PL we should sign, I doubt anyone in this forum would have put Johnson on it, so poor has he been the last couple of years. Yet suddenly 6 goals in 5 games, and people are advocating signing him. Such short term thinking they could be consultants for Levy.

I didnt advocate signing him, I'm highlighting the way Poyet seems to get the best out of his players.

My point is that the club think they're better than they are, and as a result never go for the hard working grafter types, and yet how much could we do with someone of that ilk…imagine Shane Long on our team; he'd be a damn sight better playing up front with Adebayor that Loldado! Is he a world-class continental talent? No- but he gets stuck in and scores goals. So why is he on Hull and not us? How come we never try and land a decent, non-sexy forward?

Shane Long averages five goals a season in the Premier League.

Haven't we signed those types of player in the past though? Dempsey was one of those who many thought was not good enough for Spurs and was mid table at best. Sigurdsson is thought in similar light. We were right to an extent with those 2. However, I think it is not so much a case that we have no room for these less talented but hard working players, but the type of players that are right for us. I don't think these were/are the right type of player for our style of football.

Shane Long is a quality striker who works hard and suits a team like Hull. I don't think he would suit a team like Spurs who are always seeking attractive football. Our fans are very demanding on playing with style and I think that is why our fans may criticise these players. I don't think there is such a thing as a mid table player but there is certainly a level of quality and style that we need and the likes of Shane Long are not that.

So you dont think Lamela is RW that likes to cut in on his left foot?

i don't disagree with that, although i think behind the striker will probably prove to be his best position but the line "maybe even more gifted(than johnson)" was the part i was referring to. that's like saying you think modric is perhaps more talented than huddlestone.

No it's not really is it, Modric has PROVED to be more talented than Huddlestone. I held back in saying Lamela IS more talented because ultimately he has to prove that. Johnson has always been a very talented player, the penny seems to have dropped and he really is playing some amazing stuff.

how has he not proved it? does football outside of england not count? just because he hasn't had the chance to show it at spurs doesn't erase what he's done beforehand.

In the Prem he hasnt, which is the level playing field for both players. Look, I dont disagree with you, Lamela is a huge talent IMO, but not all talent reaches its potential. Sorry but I'm not one of these deluded fans that just assumes all our players are so much better than anyone elses.

He (Shane Long) would be getting booed/groaned at within 2 games...

Although it wouldn't effect his technique. ;)

Career stats - 168/346.
Totally irrelevant , stats with US, is simply all that matters.

I love how 6 people disagree with me on that. At some stage you have to forget about the past and look at current club stats. How do you all not get that? How long can you judge a player on old stats for a different team. It doesn't make sense.

Longer than around half a season perhaps.

To be honest i'm glad we didn't sign Dean Sturridge, i mean he's 40 and we would surely have to question Baldini's credentials if he signed him.

:^) Haha that's why I shouldn't start threads at 5 o'clock in the morning.
