Where is Gomes?

As with many things football, a great deal more easily said than done. Surely you remember that three years ago we were being linked with practically every half-decent keeper in Europe?

Funnily, I'm sure Harry's just as well aware of the the problem as you or I, and sees Friedel as a stop-gap for a season, or two seasons at the most.
and as we found then finding a top class GK is no easy job, finding a upgrade on a excellant GK like Gomes for the long term is...... Where we are at now is that we are going to lose all 3 of our GK's within 2 years, hence back to square one again.....

I wonder if, over the last three seasons, maybe longer, the fact that the back four has never been a regular unit, because of one fellow, our Club Captain, that keepers have problems defending their space as keepers should do.

Blimey! That's a bit controversial for you, PT!

It's a thought, though. 05-06 was our best season defensively since I had lots of hair and looked really cool in a tie-dyed T-shirt, knuckle-cord flares and snakeskin cowboy boots (70-71, if anyone's in the slightest interested). We had the much-derided Stalteri, Dawson, King, and the sometimes-derided Lee for the bulk of our games.

Snakeskin cowboy boots?!

We also played four central midfielders a lot of the time.

Gifted to me by a Californian hippy who somehow wound up in Leeds (we had the best bands in the country then) and crashed out in our front room for a couple of weeks. I looked terminally fucking cool in them, I can tell you. Especially with the loon pants.

I'm sure we'll cope. We usually do, one way or the other.

And, much as I'm a huge Gomes fan and very happy to forgive his eccentricities, I don't have a clue what's really going on behind the scenes.

In my mind, it's been a factor. I would not have offered him a new contract at all. Continuity is the way forward for me.

I would have kept Leds for the Cups and as cover, but aimed for a more settled pairing in the Premiership. Though in fairness Leds has not been our only injury prone centreback...

Yet when King comes back in we win invariably, so its not like he ever benefits by playing with someone regularly. I guess its just the class of the man.

Speechless.

We got our money back, not quite the same thing

Maybe...but I thought it was more than that - folk on here were saying it proved how much of a genius Levy was that he could make money on a player we hadn't brought. I may be wrong, but I am fairly sure something like this was said.
But, like I said, I may be wrong.

Sad though that we do not have a motivator or a special trainer to help and assist our GK. Robinson went through a similar patch and we just sold him.
Apparently, James consulted a specialist to help him

Tony Parkes did that once.

Gomes just decided to unlearn what he'd been taught.

Well HR confirms the big man is looking to move:

2 seasons ago, he was brilliant and was part of the team that successfully took us to CL.
Last season was a nightmare - but Defoe had a bad season too yet he is given a chance. Granted Defoe was injured...
Anyway, looks like its bye bye Gomes.

And it looks like the club kept him until we sealed Sandro for a long term contract and then confirmed that he will probably leave in January.
Come on Gomes - Bounce back and be the octopus again you pussy!

So Tony Parks picks the team now does he? Redknapp said Parks thought Cudicini would be a better bet for the bench. So from first choice he is now 3rd choice. I agree with Friedel as no1 but Cudicini as no2 is a joke

Personally it makes me happy that Redknapp is listening to his coaches recommendations in training, especially with regard to mentiality and professionalism. Gomes is clearly not in the right frame of mind to be called upon - according to Parkes who knows his game inside out.

And your Also happy that despite Redknapp knowing this he hasn't tried to motivate him again?

It would seem Cudicini is happy to be on every bench going and Gomes will start all the cup games meaning an absolute minimum of 8 starts. If he proves himself in those 8 games then I hope Arry will be fair and recall him for league games if Friedels form dips

I think the discussion rests on whether it is better to have a good solid GK who rarely makes clangers (Friedel in my eyes) or an eccentric GK who can make amazing world class saves but is always prone to make a mistake every 1/2 games (Gomes).

If I had to choose then I would go for Friedel as mistakes undoubtedly have a knock on effect for confidence in regards to our defence and obviously opposition teams look to exploit error prone keepers.

It also raises the question about who is going to be our long term number 1?
