I can't not say anything about their incredible achievement tonight. I watched it and I felt so proud of every one of them. I admit to feeling quite emotional at the end. They managed to do what no other senior England team has done since the World Cup in those far off black and white days of 1966, they actually managed to win a trophy, and I as an England fan am feeling 'over the moon' for all the ladies last night. Unbelievable.

It was the Queen wot won it

Robert Hardman is a 57-year-old Cambridge-educated journalist and author whose full range of published books are ‘Monarchy – The Royal Family At Work’, ‘Our Queen’, ‘Queen of the World’ and ‘Queen of our Times’. There is a subtle theme.

So when England won the European Championship on Sunday, who better to write the front page – the actual front page! – of the Daily Mail than Hardman?

It took him only three paragraphs to mention the Queen, which made her the very first person mentioned in his piece. Before the match-winner Chloe Kelly. Before the coach Sarina Wiegman. Before every single member of that England team.

‘Within minutes, the Queen had saluted the achievement.’
What a hero.

”Your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned,’ the Lioness-in-Chief declared in a statement from Balmoral.”
The Lioness-in-Chief?! Ladies and gentlemen, the Daily bloody Mail.

Brilliant achievement that will hopefully do nothing but good for the women's game. I'm looking forward to watching the women's matches on Spursplay this season.

I saw a story today that has confused me. The extra time goal celebration is being lauded as inspirational.

If a man removes his shirt after a goal he gets yellow carded as it's been decided from some suits that it is unacceptable.

Que?

I saw a story today that has confused me. The extra time goal celebration is being lauded as inspirational.

it harkens back to 1999 - when the US women won the World Cup at home, Brandi Chastain scored the winning pen and then took off her shirt in celebration.

That moment has been described as a pivotal moment in women's football in the US, in terms of raising its profile, and inspiring a new generation of players.

Similarly, everything I read about the Lionesses is that they want this moment to be the beginning, not the end. So the iconic moment becomes one that inspires new generations of Lionesses

Seems a record 17.4 million people watched the game last night. That cannot be ignored can it? Surely the FA or Premier League will start to help it grow by putting some money and/or whatever else is needed into the women's game from the ground up.

Over to you football authorities.

I still think the FA will fumble what should be a tap in for the growth of woman's football across all levels.

The PL unless I am mistaken currently has nothing to do with the WSL so unless the FA handed over the governence of the league to the PL they won't get involved.

Not sure they put enough in to men’s lower league football.

Lot of salty Germans on Twitter complaining about home ref bias, how they never got a decision, how it was a definite pen, we should have had two red cards. Etc. have to say, it’s glorious.
Eh? Ref was awful for both sides I thought.

First time on SC since the game yesterday and boy, what a game!
It's been a cracking tournament and some top quality performances and games, with a great and welcoming atmosphere in all of the stadiums.

Was slightly disappointed at the turn out in my local but then, it's a bit of a drinkers pub so mostly middle aged/old blokes.
Maybe I should've watched at another place because there were a fair few comments along the lines of "not a proper sport", "the ironing's piling up" and "hope they swap shirts at the end".
Thankfully, I'd had a few before I got there so the comments petered out once I'd called a few of them "Sexist, mysogynistic, old fucking dinosaurs", then generally took the piss out of them for their old-fashioned ignorant ways.
These are the types that are in the pub nearly every evening, while their wife is sat at home so it felt quite good to use this occasion to give them some shit.
Sweaty old ****s! ?

I couldn't actually believe one bloke, who is a company director and was sat with his 30 something daughter, coming out with some of the same.
Sadly he's a Spurs season ticket holder too.
He actually said that he'll "only watch elite football, doesn't even bother watching the Championship because... What's the point"?!

Was rather disappointed by him, tbh.

I have to admit, I struggled getting into the women’s game, I watched bits of yesterday and cheered the win and goals.

it’s an entirely different game, I’d like to see the women play with smaller goals though, I think that would make it a lot more competitive for the women’s game, but overall the game has come on leaps and bounds over the years, chuffed for the win!

Why? How? Let's do it in the premier League too if it makes it more competitive. Maybe city and Liverpool won't score as many.

Have they been denied a bus parade?

That's disgusting if it's true.
It's a great achievement from them, and should have their moment through the streets of London.

The sexism is so predictable tbf but what the fuck is this about?

I swear there are too many football fans who don't actually like football.

He obviously hasn't been a spurs fan for long, as I'm sure some championship teams have been more enjoyable to watch than us at points ..

I think for some, the tribalism is more important than the football.

I don't understand the smaller goals argument. If all the games were ending up 7-6 after 90mins then I could understand. But the games all have pretty normal scorelines. Yes the keepers are not as tall on average as the mens but the women also have a bit less power in their shots as well to compensate. The keeping standard at this euros has been very good I think, a much higher level than it has been before. And the technical level of the women is improving massively and I can only see that going the same way.
Yeah technically loads better, just think goals are too big, much like youth football, due to size of players player they don’t play full size until like u15’s etc
Why? How? Let's do it in the premier League too if it makes it more competitive. Maybe city and Liverpool won't score as many.
It’s the physical size that’s the difference. Not many keepers in prem under 6’2/6’3, women way shorter with shorter arms etc
