Yeah technically loads better, just think goals are too big, much like youth football, due to size of players player they don’t play full size until like u15’s etc

It’s the physical size that’s the difference. Not many keepers in prem under 6’2/6’3, women way shorter with shorter arms etc
I get what the difference is. I'm asking how making the goals smaller makes it more competitive? It don't think it does. It just means you might get fewer goals as it's harder for both teams to score.

I mentioned yesterday that the goals have been the same size for over a hundred years, but people are about six or seven inches taller on average. The men have outgrown the goals if anything. Women are now around the height that the goals were originally intended for.

We've just had a brilliantly entertaining tournament, but we keep getting this suggestion that they should make goals smaller. I really don't get it.

By the way, your son's a keeper right? Does the girls team get the same level of coaching that he receives?

No idea on the women’s coaching tbh, as he is part of the men’s set up, he has played the women’s first team though when he was u14/u15 - actually could have been when the England keeper was at Reading too!

tbh, watching the games, technically the game has come on leaps and bounds, entertaining matches, just thought the goalkeeping reminded me of seeing youngsters in full size goals is all

The sexism is so predictable tbf but what the fuck is this about?

I swear there are too many football fans who don't actually like football.
Exactly, I expected to hear the sexism but this truly shocked me. The guy is in his mid sixties and has been a season ticket holder for yonks, so to hear him come out with this... I was dumbfounded and literally speechless. Didn't know how to respond to it!

It just doesn't make sense to me because some of the best footie comes from the lower leagues.

He obviously hasn't been a spurs fan for long, as I'm sure some championship teams have been more enjoyable to watch than us at points ..
He's in his mid sixties and I really didn't expect that from a Spurs fan.
City's new breed maybe but not Spurs.

Seems a record 17.4 million people watched the game last night. That cannot be ignored can it? Surely the FA or Premier League will start to help it grow by putting some money and/or whatever else is needed into the women's game from the ground up.

Over to you football authorities.

It’s really hard to judge how significant that is. You have to remember mens club football has been in existence in regard to large crowds for over 100 years. Support passed down through generations. The ultimate test is who turns up to a bog standard league game week in week out. I think 3k turned up to the Leicester games at the stadium. Look at the Athletics at the Olympics and the massive hype stadium sold out every session, super Sunday etc. And look at state of Athletics now. I’m sure the womens Olympic hockey final got huge figures. The game needs time to organically grow probably decades. Imo the rhetoric and narrative is very forced.

I don't think anyone is suggesting it's going to become anywhere near as 'big' as the Premier League overnight or indeed ever. But it won't grow much unless the seeds are planted and now would appear to the the right time to take advantage, while the appetite is there.

I think one big difference is the type of football the woman’s game appeals to, lots of the crowd seemed much more family friendly, almost party atmosphere so to speak, rather than the traditional pissed up blokes at a match (not suggesting we are all piss heads), but it’s appeal is much more family friendly

So Kier Starmer said last night on Twatter 'Lionesses, you have inspired a nation of women and girls'....

Have I missed something here? Is this the same Kier Starmer who was struggling a few weeks ago on LBC to define what a woman actually is?
I think he later went on to say a minority of women have penises. From that, am I to assume that women with penises would be welcome in women's football. That appears to be where 'Keith's' logic is heading.

No, that's just in your head. It's likely he just meant it as said, because everyone else was tweeting away about it and congratulating, without thinking too much about it.

Well precisely. That's the problem with Starmer, sometimes he overthinks and ties himself in knots as per his appearance on LBC.

I don't think he thought at all, he just added his congratulations. No offence but maybe you're doing the overthinking here?

Anyway, we probably won't agree so let's not derail the thread.

Just seen this and couldn’t agree more ? why is it always the good keepers have something a bit scary about them.

For comparison, this is the USWNT starting goalie, Alyssa Naeher. If there's a bar fight, I'm standing behind her.

Question...Womens football can not be critised as like the mens-why? After yesterdays outcome do we take them serious or not. At what point can we scrutinise ability.

Now tbh, I don’t think it’s fair to compare to the men’s game, but yeah I’d say open to same level of scrutiny, even more so when the prices /wages go up.

Mira why I’m probably a little critical of the keeping standard a bit I guess

Would you expect the same level of play at Dag & Red as you would watching Spurs? Would you criticize their (Dag & Red's) ability?

I think criticism of the women's game is fair - so long as you are comparing apples to apples.

If its not for you - I think that's fair, but then just move on, and let others enjoy the competition without your criticism.

Agree with this. Basically it's the whole idea of context. We can criticise a lot of things, including the women's game... but hopefully it comes from a good place and is aware of the context.

As has been said a lot of late, the women's game was literally banned in the past, so we have to remember that what we're seeing now is still the early stages of the development of it all for example. So just somewhat baring that in mind.

In the same way we somewhat hold lower league football to a different standard knowing their resources, reach etc...

All sports have s level and within that level it can be questioned. I would not compare to men and never have done. Your reply is exactly what I’m questioning. Your suppressing views by your dismissive reply. Their game is demonstrating for the same wage/stadiums/Tv rights as men, it’s not that good ( which you have suggested).

A lot of the players in the England squad are earning £25-30k per year in the WSL.

Raheem Sterling was earning £30k per week as a 17 year old.
