Saha was a quality player who is a scapegoat of the period of "Sandra, I'm getting the Englund job". Despite the stick he gets, I'm sure he got as many open play league goals in 10 games as Janssen and Soldado did some 80 or 90 between them.

Saha was decent, but the reason why he’s not remembered more fondly is because the alternative at the time was Suarez :(

This link has Stambouli vibes to me, a random name plucked out of a hat as he's cheap. At least Nelsen and Saha were PL proven, even if way over the hill compared to their peak, but if they weren't they'd have been too expensive.

Frazier Campbell is too painful to remember so let's not go there.

I would take him if it means we use funds for Bale...

Which obviously won't happen....

Oh ok cheers, my mistake. Obviously I still haven't got over Jan 2011! ;)

As ever, the theme was "Liverpool sell key player in decline for unthinkable sum and manage to find better player for half price :cautious: ". Although they did pay 1.5 times more for Andy Carroll than they did Suarez!

My view of that window was that Redknapp wasn't expecting to be around very long (court and England job both going on in short succession) and he wasn't planning on any future with us. His "they've never had it so good" stuff around the time suggests to me that he was happy for the club to have regressed the moment he left us, so I wouldn't have expected him to bring in any young potential at that point.
Funny though, in comparison to now, that Redknapp was happy to get rid of Pav and bring in Saha, but I think we had maybe 3 other strikers and VDV on the books then too. His squad was so much fatter that anything we've had since and it still wasn't enough, apparently!

On topic, I would be quite happy with Dost on the basis that he looks like someone Mourinho could get a tune out of. Not much of a risk. Looks like could easily work with Kane too, being a box predator and Kane liking to drop back.

I think Bas Dost is a bit under rated, he is one dimensional, but that dimension will piss all over the fodder teams we will be playing in early rounds of cups.

He also offers what Llorente did but with more mobility. It will make the likes of Lucas and Son a lot more dangerous as they will have more to feed off of.

£5.5m is no brainer, get him in and use whatever money is left to plug the creativity gap when GLC is unavailable - even if we can only afford Will Hughes.

Bas Dost looks like the sort of guy who only knows the words Bas Dost and replies to every question with them. Like Hodor or Groot.

I appreciate some might be trying to put a positive spin on things, whether that is through natural enthusiasm or simply being unshakeable BSoDLs, but we've had numerous examples of such signings in the past, and the overwhelming majority of these bargain basement players were not good enough for us then and wouldn't be now, even though we've gone backwards. Fast forward a year and we're trying to frantically get them and their wages out the door again.

If 'not much of a risk' is the best praise than can be mustered then that doesn't bode well.

If there is any truth in this rumour then our dear leader is totally taking the piss out of us.
Absolute joke links. Mid table mediocrity here we come

Perhaps we're giving this link too much credit but (however unlikely) this scenario (Bale coming back) would actually shift a lot of fan opinion potentially.

My two pennies on Bas Dost - Yes, he's a bit of an underwhelming link, yes he's a bit one dimensional perhaps (based on what little i know) but the price lowers our risk significantly and he is a player who a) seems to have averaged 35/36 games a season for his entire career and b) has consistently scored a decent amount of goals across 3 European leagues.

Not such a bad option on paper.

Interesting that our latest striker links are cheaper now. I wonder if we're just weighing up a cheap striker in case we have to finance Bale. I know nothing about this guy but I would take another Llorente for the short term if we get Bale. If no Bale then we splash out on a Milik.

No. I’d imagine our dear leader won’t spend and will always go for cheap option.
