Also, don't know if anyone mentioned it but I think it was that Adam Osper on T*itter who said 2 were inbound, and then it was implied both were Dutch. That Promes kid was ruled out I believe so Wijnaldum and Janssen would make sense.

This is precisely the type of player I've been hoping we'd be linked with to round out the squad.

Versatile, capable of providing cover for Dembele (so we aren't completely dependent upon the academy CMs who were all, for one reason or another, unreliable last season) and in the AM3 (to provide rotation given the fixture congestion we will face).

I had hoped, given our CL qualification, that we would go in for a better player (e.g. Kovacic) but if we end up with Wijnaldum I'll be reasonably satisfied.

Don't think he could cover Dembele in our system.

This is a very sensible option. I have to say i'm pretty impressed with our signings this summer.

However, i really feel we need a 'star' player in our midfield to take us that one step further. A Payet type.

He was the player of the year in the Eredivisie in 2014-2015 playing primarily from central midfield. If Tom Carroll can play in CM for us (although tbf that is debatable), so can Wijnaldum.

It still annoys me how they managed to get him .

Pretty straightforward question here, I think.

Does Wijnaldum tick the boxes that Poch has openly stated he looks for first & foremost, ie good attitude, good work ethic & the capacity to accept that he'll only be selected if he puts in the necessary work on the training pitch?

I can't just go by what I saw on MOTD etc, and I don't think it's fair to judge him upon what he did last season, as the club was clearly rudderless throughout the entire campaign & it must've been practically impossible for any player to keep their head up, so to speak.

So, anyone who has watched a good deal of this lad, your input would be greatly appreciated! (y)

I'm merely stipulating, but does he have some kind of a release clause which makes him a bargain? Something connected to an incoming offer following relegation or anything? If so and he is kind of on a cheap, it would certainly account for some of the interest, if the reports about Spurs' interest are factual. Newcastle paid not a small fee for him.

Decent stats for a debut Prem season in a fairly woeful team.

I'd take a punt on him, but wouldn't want to pay much more than 10mil.

He played CM in a 4-3-3. That's very different to playing as a CM in a 4-2-3-1.

Great point.. Judging by these comments, I reckon you may be onto something (y)

"My role is indeed still a bit unclear. But I am no different in this situation," he told Dutch publicationMetro Nieuws.

"Do I have a clause that I can leave if relegated? I do not give information about what is in my contract.

"I do not think about it until the end of the season and focus on the upcoming matches.

But the club is working hard to put everything right and I am confident that we will be okay."

He has the ability but does he have the fight, that's what I'd question and according to Newcastle fans he went missing quite a lot last season.

We're at a stage now in this league where we can't afford to carry passengers in the team, we need players who will stand up and be counted in every game as the margins are small but the rewards are big,

I suppose so but I don't think he's completely incapable of providing the same degree of defensive contribution as Carroll or Mason. He certainly has the requisite athleticism for the pressing game if he applies himself, and I trust Poch to be able to coach him into the role. Paired with Dier or Wanyama I think we would be just fine. We won't be able to find a like-for-like replacement for Dembele, he's truly unique in world football.

He gets goals, from midfield or no 10. With Dier and Wanyama he's just what we need. Again if Poch gets him better, quite a player.

Considering the dumpster fire that was Newcastle last season, I can't necessarily blame him if he was a little "gone" during games.

Like with Wanyama, if he can be had at a decent price I'd be all for it. He's proven he's got talent.

Love this signing. He's not a finished product and he'll have to work to get in the team, but I see him as a much more effective substitution than Mason or Carroll when we need goals. Also could provide some cover for Eriksen as we have no one else to play that role.

Inconsistent/MOTD player according to the Newcastle supporters I've spoken to him about.
