Mate, I make no secret of my lack of knowledge when it comes to players from outside of our club BUT I can't think of 2 players that differ more than Coutinho & Modric?

They do differ. My point was stating the kind of diversity in players.

This is precisely the type of player I've been hoping we'd be linked with to round out the squad.

Versatile, capable of providing cover for Dembele (so we aren't completely dependent upon the academy CMs who were all, for one reason or another, unreliable last season) and in the AM3 (to provide rotation given the fixture congestion we will face).

I had hoped, given our CL qualification, that we would go in for a better player (e.g. Kovacic) but if we end up with Wijnaldum I'll be reasonably satisfied.

Interesting point.

As much as I love early signings, I do almost hope we bide our time a bit on non-essential but squad strengthening positions, which I would file Wijnaldum under. With our CL football it could be a good idea to let some of the big boys do their work and see if something opportunistic like Kovacic pops up. If not someone like Spam will luck out from aiming too high and failing for most of the summer.

Look at Man Utd for example, the likes of Depay or Herrera could end up on the market soon, following Mata out of the door.

That said if there's a release clause of around £10-15m on GW I could see Levy jumping on it.

Maybe this deal could have been discussed when we let Townsend go to them in January. We surely must have mentioned his availability if they were relegated.

Have to say the way this thread is shaping up gives the transfer an air of inevitability to it (a bit like Wanyama).

Personally prefer to give one of our younger midfielders a chance rather than buying him. Think he is a tad overrated.

Some players are easily influenced by those around them, which may be beneficial in our case as our players and coach have a much more driven mentality, even if things went south at the end. If your captain is Coloccini and your teammates include Sissoko, Thauvin and Cisse, not to mention Steve McClaren, it's easier to become affected by what's going on around you.

Is he better than Mason? Carroll? Pritchard?

Those are the names you should be comparing him to. We aren't buying to replace the starting XI.

Not enough of an improvement to justify spending 10m+ on him. 11 goals for Newcastle last season and yet loads of Newcastle fans don't rate him. He's a MOTD player.

Would be absolutely delighted if we could pull this off!!! exactly the sort of player we should be targeting now we are in the CL.

Lock the thread, we will be going in circles for the next 73 pages echoing these two posts in a constant haze.

I advocated signing him last summer, as I was very impressed with the way he led PSV to the title easily. His versatility was one reason why I wanted us to sign him, and I made it a point to watch him often at Newcastle.

He started off last season well, but as things got tougher for them, he went missing in matches where they were being outplayed and needed a spark. I don't think he'd ever been in a situation where a club was performing that poorly, and it showed in some very uninspired performances.

With that said, what he has that we lack is top shelf athleticism. We don't have a single player with his combination of leaping ability and pace. He's also got some very good technical skills and has a habit of getting in great positions in the box. For a small fee, he's the right calculated gamble for us as he has a lot of European experience.

I'm all for signing him, as I think he has much more to show and was damaged by the corrosive atmosphere up north.

Then what's the point?

I only want players coming in if they are potentially better than what we already have so they can really challenge them or replace them.

Agree 100%.

Newcastle were always fucked with Mc Laren in charge as he a pondering imbecile.

Poch will improve him for sure.

I know that a couple of people have complained about his alleged "Attitude problems" The way I see it, I think he was just a little hacked off and deflated over his experience of Newcastle. He was signed there for a lot of money, along with a few other big players, as part of this "Big rebuild" for the club, to try and push them back up into the big time.

Instead he ended up playing with a bunch of clowns at Newcastle, where I think he stood out head and shoulders above every other player in my opinion. Would be happy to have him at Spurs if I'm honest, think he could be that intricate player that would be happy with a rotational role in the team and would bring something a little different to our team.

That being said, would prefer Boufal.

Yep. Hes not for me at all.

Fortunately I doubt it's true we are after him.
