I think that the original poster has a point on the matter of respect. I have no problem with what he gets called on message boards, twitter, in the stands etc. or even in headlines. I see no problem with AVB being used if it makes a good headline. I think calling him AVB within commentary and repeatedly within articles is lazy and disrespectful.

I agree, and with the OP, but the problem is exactly that, at the moment the press have no respect for him. He came over here off the back of good things with Porto, and failed miserably at Chelsea.

Until we get a win at Old Trafford or completely own one of the SKY4 for 90 minutes in a match they will continue to make his life hell and disrespect him. It's why it's so imperative that we show our support for the team at WHL (White Hart Lane....sorry) and help out all we can by creating an intimidating atmosphere.

Thank you. This was exactly my point.

Even Bill Nicholson came to be often called Billy Nick..........it really just needs to be appropriate in the particular context

I do t think it matters much on a message board etc. but can sort of see the point when they can't be assed in the rags. But then we all know journos:) are lazy fuckers don't we!

If he's happy to wear AVB on his spurs training gear then fuck it, that's what I'll call him.

Plus anyone that says it as 'Viyash-Bowash' sounds like a tit anyway.

Where is Steve Maclaren these days?

The funny thing is, I had never thought about it, but:
As Karenina says, nobody has the rhythm to make the acronym catchy.
In speech, I use Villas Boas, Vilasch Boasch, and AVB. In writing/typing, always AVB. If I were composing a dissertation, I am sure, I would use Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas - but I'm not, this is a football forum, and I will quite happily continue typing AVB for no other reason than that it is easier until Doomesday and beyond.
Journalists, particularly television journalists, could maybe get into the habit of calling him Andre Villas Boas, at first mention in any given piece, as a sign of respect, and then subsequently use the acronym like a pronoun.

I honestly prefer AVB over Villasch Boasch. There is something strange about the pronounciation.. I suppose that's how the portuguese would pronounce it, but it just doesn't sit right with me. Sounds very silly.
Generally speaking, Portuguese is just Spanish as spoken by Sean Connery (think about it...).

I think I sound pretentious when I pronounce it Viy-ash Bo-ash... & I think other Spurs I know feel the same, I've heard him called:
AVB, Villas - Bo-as, Vill-ash Bo-ash and memorably, 'villy billy'.

So I've settled on Sexy ginger love god.

This is the point really, the Portuguese accent relating to 's' sounds crap in English and anyone who pronounces his name correctly sounds stupid when saying it, and they are still wrong 90% of the time.

There's no point in having 5 different people say his name in 5 different ways, so we call him AVB - which he seems to be cool with.

As for it being insulting - you have to remember the culture of these things varies widly, here's some Brazilian players nicknames that they were given and which they had to have used for their entire life:

Pele - Dark skinned (or darky in slang)
Garrincha - Little bird
Vampetta - Evil vampire
Careca - Baldy

My point - that nicknames aren't a sign of disrespect and in fact can be quite the opposite.

I remember reading that Pele hated being called "Pele" at an early age. I can see why now. "Darky" really?!

You're pretty much spot on though. The AVB thing isn't a sign of disrespect - even from the media. They're just too lazy/incapable of saying it correctly so say AVB because it's easier. I don't see the issue with that.

I take issue with plenty of other things with the media and the fact they are gunning for our manager but the fact they call him "AVB" isn't one of the issues, for me.

"The Wally with the Brolly" and "Turnip Head" - those are the kinds of names which aren't so clever.
