Lloris my MOTM

Lloris - 8 - succession of great saves
Walker - 5 - Some small good bits amongst a lot of crap
Dier - 6 - Dealt with the dirty Zamora and Austin combo ok
Vertonghen - 6 - Ditto
Davies - 6 - Really want him to be better than Rose. Isn't.

Mason - 6.5 - Combative as usual, got forward well, but we had no control in midfield for much of the game.
Bentaleb - 5.5 - First average game in a while, looked knackered, got knocked around a bit.

Chadli - 5 - Just didn't do enough - he either seems to score and get involved or almost disappear.
Eriksen - 6 - Not at his best but still influential.
Townsend - 6 - Some typically poor bits, good cross for the first goal, some decent counter running.

Kane - 7.5 - Did little but score two goals. Bothered, scored two goals.

SUBS:

Dembele - 7 - Looked well up for it, got us more control of the ball for periods.
Lamela - 6.5 - Started a couple of good counters, held the ball up on his own well once, lost it a couple of times.
Stambouli - NET - Not sure he touched the ball.
Why the hell do you REALLY want him to be better than Rose?!!! What is it with Rose? He's also a spurs player you know.

Im just puzzled with your statement.

Lloris - 8
Walker - 5
Dier - 6
Verts - 6
Davies - 5
Mason - 6.5
Bentaleb - 5
Townsend - 6
Eriksen - 5
Chadli - 5
Kane - 7.5

Dembele - 7
Lamela - 6 did okay in the 15 minutes. Started a few counters, held up well.
Stambouli - NET

Poch - 6

Poch got it wrong from the start and should have rotated a bit. Dembele should have started over Chadli and played the 10. Also would have started Lamela over Townsend. QPR were ripe to get shredded by quick incisive passing on a counter in the first half as it was wide open. The CM 2 couldnt control the ball, so we had to rely on the counter and it didnt really work. Townsend did okay in the first half but it really wasnt the right game for him, IMO. Fazio also probably could have started too, but whatever.

If not for Lloris and QPR's poor finishing, we would have been down 3-0 after 25 minutes. The CM2 was getting shredded, we couldnt hold the ball and the back 4 was shocking. We scored off a set piece(!!!!!!) totally against the run of play. Did better in the 2nd half, and Dembele coming on changed the game, but still not good enough.

We really need to put these games away though. Cant keep letting in late goals and rest on our laurels. Poch NEEDS to shore up the back 4 already and we need to keep at it until the final whistle. If I am Poch, I am concentrating solely on defending this week until the last day or so used for match prep.

All in all, not a good performance in the least. If we were playing a better side, the result would have been ALOT different. Very lucky to win and only concede 1.

Agree Dembele should have started, agree maybe Fazio could have started.

Disagree Dembele changed the game though, despite agreeing he done well when he came on....from the 45th min upto the 75th when Qpr scored, we dominated and should have scored more than the 2 we had, Dembele came on after 65mins and we were already in total control at that stage.

The problem we had yesterday was Dier & Verts couldn't cope with the direct ball and looked like they had just met, that was the poorest they have played as a pair.
The other problem we had was down our left where Davies & Chadli offered very little going forward and Chadli offered nothing defensively, he should have come off at HT though tbf he improved slightly in that 2nd period when we dominated.

The stick Walker is getting by many on here is becoming a joke, yes he nearly cost us a goal with the back header, yes he should have done better when through, but i for one love the geezer, his energy, passion , desire and would be gutted if he wasn't playing, i don't give a flying fuck if people don't rate him, i back Walker all day.Walker is certainly not our problem and people should cut him some flak imo.

As for the result....can't believe you think we were lucky to win, i presume you watched the whole 90 and not highlights ? bar a flurry at the end , and a few chances before we scored our first, i thought we did enough to win, we certainly weren't lucky even though we could have fucked it up at the end ,a few lucky escapes yes, lucky to win no....we should have put the game to bed long before Sandro scored.

I find it hard to believe that you keep bashing the shit out of Mason (a player I think has been overhyped) but leap to the defence of Walker. As you were.
I actually think Mason is just an average player who wears his heart on his sleeve and nothing else. Hes like cleverley or sherwood, players who worked hard but didnt really had the skills. I dont mean to downrate him, in fact i like his grit and spirit, but i dont think he will go far with spurs. Maybe 2 or 3 seasons max and then he will leave for a mid-table team.

Mason has the skills believe me, right now the next step in his game is blending it with his high energy performances. We've seen him dribble past players in tight situations and execute cute through balls, now it's all about getting that out more often.

And still the problem of giving teams far too many chances on target exists. Has been a very big problem all through the season.

Mason & Bentaleb are great at pressing the oposition , but most of that is done in the middle third and further forward, neither of them are natural Matic or,Makelele types protecting our CB's...so other teams will always have a run at our defence in those central areas...Bentaleb is only 19 , he will learn and adapt his game, and when he does will be a really top top player, unfortunately i can see him becoming so good the likes of RM will come calling..:(

Lloris made a few outstanding saves again, saved Walker's arse big time and as for the penalty incident, the ball was falling between him and Isla, neither player had any control of it, neither player won it and they kicked each others foot. As much a foul on Lloris as a foul on Isla, so no penalty!

Walker does improve our right hand side merely by virtue of the fact that he plays the way, in both directions, Pochettino wants. However, I am beginning to wonder (and I've always been a huge admirer of his since his earliest appearances) if he actually is good enough. He's making inexplicable mistakes every match, he's constantly wasting promising play and instigating opposition attacks and chances, and I actually think he's being beaten for pace quite regularly, something which he could never have been accused of prior to his injury. Let's see come summer, he may come into next season after a good break and a proper pre season picking up where he left off pre injury, but if there isn't a dramatic improvement on what we're seeing currently then he'll be a liability. As it stands, I'm desperate to see what Yedlin can do.

Dier played pretty well, didn't really make any mistakes, but probably came off second best in the physical battle with their very aggressive centre forwards.

For Vertonghen, see above. A few important clearances and interceptions but struggled with their physicality and constant long balls. I'd say Fazio instead of either of Dier or Vertonghen would have done the trick in this game.

Davies played relatively well. Rose is currently the better player, but Davies brings a different kind of perfdormance. He's a better passer (and crosses) and holds the ball well when hassled, which against Onuoha and Islan, two fairly aggressive right backs, was justifiable. However, I am a big believer in 'if it ain't broke' so I'd have probably preferred to see Rose.

Mason was very good. His pass for our winner was superb, his fight and heart is inspiring, his late runs are getting better and better (when Walker shot and it clipped Mason's heel to nearly go in, it really should've been a slide rule pass for Mason to take in his stride and be through on goal). For me, the guy is our next captain. His only really draw back was being sloppy in possession but that has vastly improved, while his will to push us forward constantly has been as important to us as Kane turning into a great all round forward. I'm pretty sure if anybody really looked at our season and where our improvement really began, they'd trace it back to this guy scoring that goal v Forest and then emerging ahead of the ever lackadaisical Capoue.

Bentaleb dipped a little today and looked a little jaded, but he's holding onto the ball better and better every game, he's become more purposeful with his passing, and he's getting stuck in too, all this to go with his calmness and clever movement already there since his debut. I've been a bit of a sceptic with this player but he's winning me over. I'm undecided whether it should have been a penalty for the ball to his hand. Frankly, Austin's boot was high and wild (and did in fact make contact with Bentaleb), I don't see how it can be described as anything other than self defence to have his hands up there.

Townsend I actually thought played pretty well. Assist aside, he took the ball regularly and found ways to pull their defenders in different directions. I actually think he's steadily improved recently and one moment that typified his improvement in this game was when he received the ball high up on the right hand side, had nowhere to go really and took the ball backwards and across under strong pressure before playing the ball well into space in the middle. That began a really good passing move which, I believe, led to the Walker/ Eriksen chance.

Eriksen wasn't superb. He had a great shot and another good chance, and he continually tried to keep the ball high up the pitch, but he's been huffing and puffing for a few games and I think he'll be delighted to have a week off now. No long term reservations, he's a great player, but right now he's not finding much joy with his passing and the goals have dried up. Like has been pointed out though, he is working harder than he ever has and that's why he keeps playing, because like Kane, if you know the class is there and if the work rate is evident, you don't drop someone just because it's not going their way.

Chadli had another frustrating match in my opinion. The guy is so skillfull, quick and strong, he has everything to be unbelievable, but he's not involved anywhere near enough. Since his father passed away he's not recaptured his form and that is understandable, but it can be difficult watching the guy produce only 50% of what he's capable of. One thing I will say is that, like Eriksen, he has a very good relationship with Kane and that is a big driver in our attacking play. The front four right now seem very in tune, in fact, the front six seem very in tune.

Kane worked his socks off, played well with his back to goal, played 2 of our three best passes of the match (and a peach of a cross for Vertonghen) and scored two great goals, one the brave header, one the composed, classy finish. He drops deep when he needs to, he makes runs constantly, he tried the unexpected and the ambitious and he takes full responsibility for our attack. Love this kid.

Dembele held the ball up and kept us in the areas of the pitch we wanted to be in.

Lamela hassled and harassed, but boy oh boy do I expect a better first touch from a player with his billing.

Stambouli came on to continue the work the midfield had been doing and did just that.

Good game overall. We played some nice stuff, we struggled with long balls and physicality, it wasn't as comfortable as our play deserved and we conceded to a beloved ex player with his first goal since leaving us. All in all, a very Spurs game.

Hmm
You mention all the things Walker did wrong in detail but neglect the things he did well, making crucial blocks and winning several aireal duels . Making a goal saving tackle when a qpr player was through on goal, putting in a great cross that kane should've finished.

Suppose you can't stop a witch hunt, until said witch is on the stake

That goal saving tackle where he played Austin on side you mean?

and some wanted Benteke - he and the rest of Aston Villa have scored 15 goals in PL, Kane has scored 16....

BTW, Charlie Auston looked a much better all round striker than I had been expecting - and looking at his stats has been averaging a goal every 2 games over the last 5 years, admittedly only this season in the PL, but that's a decent scoring record over 5 years. Do we think he's a more sensible target than Lukaku or Benteke assuming QPR go down

I was all for Benteke two seasons ago. To be fair with him, I think he's suffered with injuries and generally suffered with the all turmoil surrounding Villa.

Lukaku I never particularly rated, and would take Benteke if it was a choice between the two.

I'm not sure about Austin either, is his general play good enough? Not for me.

Lloris - 8 - Thought as always he was outstanding, not to blame for Sandro's goal and made a couple of fantastic saves. It's credit to him that I am never even surprised or that impressed by his world class saves anymore......he's that good I just expect him to make them.
Walker - 6 - Shocking headed back pass which could have put us behind had Lloris not bailed him out, perfect cross for Kane which could have lead to a goal. He played pretty well I think, bit of a mixed performance with highs and lows summed up by those two moments at opposing ends of the spectrum. I like the passion he showed today and his work rate.
Dier - 6 - I think he is showing signs that he's going to be an excellent centre back but again yesterday he looked vulnerable on numerous occasions and QPR, specifically Austin found it a far too easy to get beyond our back line and have chances on our goal
Verts - 6- I think his form has been a bit poor again, maybe he needs a settled partner. He should be the leader at the back, he's experienced, but he doesn't take control, he doesn't give orders and as a result our back line is very disjointed and gets exposed time and time again. They're also not covered or supported by the midfield in front of them but if it weren't for Lloris I dread to think how many goals this back line would concede (yesterday it was QPR carving us up with ease, not Real Madrid)
Davies - 5 - I struggle to see why we bought him, looks like such a good deal for Swansea now. Bang average player, doesn't improve on Rose in anyway although I suppose he adds depth to our squad and has perhaps been the catalyst that forced Rose to step up and improve his game
Mason - 7 - Very busy, got forward well. Was excellent first half but less so in the second. Doesn't protect the back line but yesterday was a better game (two in a row from him after a bit of a sticky patch I think)
Bentaleb - 7 - He is looking like a very tidy player, strong, committed, good passing range, nice energy and good composure. Mature beyond his years. Not his best game yesterday and I feel he should be the one protecting the back four a bit more but I believe those talking down his performance are being harsh, he played well. Won the midfield battle for the most part and is probably only being harshly judged due to the hard standards he has set himself
Townsend - 6 - Shame he failed to produce, he had the beating of their left back all day but he wasn't making the most of it. He's got the talent and he needs to start producing or Lamela or Dembele will soon replace him in the line up
Eriksen - 7 - I think he was great yesterday, pulling strings all over the park and setting the tempo to our game. Again is being judged harshly due to the high standards his previous performances have set. Great player, not up to his own standards maybe as he didn't score (but only really the inside of the post stopped that)
Chadli - 6 - Not his best game, failed to really make an impact. Worked hard, put some strong challenges in etc but looked a little off the pace
Kane - 8 - Who's name is Harry Kane? well everyone knows the name now and everyone will remember in. The boy is a star. He didn't have the best service yesterday but he was a constant torn in Rangers side and everytime he got near the ball he was making things happen. Worked tirelessly, ground down the Rangers backline. Unlucky with a great header from Walker's excellent cross, reacted fastest to score a real strikers goal for his first and looked so classy and composed when he ran through against the keeper and scored an ice hockey style finish for the winner. What a hero

Dembele - 7 - I wouldn't go as far as to say he changed the game, but he certainly had a positive impact and showed he probably should have started.
Lamela - 6 - Didn't have a lot of time but everything he did do he did pretty well without looking spectacular. I think I am coming to accept the fact that he is a good player but not a star player. It's a shame he was bought for star player value but I think it time he will grow and become a productive, hard working member of our team and squad - he's just unlikely to ever be that star player I wanted and expected him to be for 30m
Stambouli - Was basically a time wasting tactical sub and had no time to directly influence the game

So he doesn't play the way poch wants. ;)

And he doesn't overlap enough and still...still gives the LW/LB a chance to easily get behind him because his tracking positioning is so awful.

And he doesn't block enough cross attempts when he has tracked properly (though that could also be said for rose/davies though to an extent). It's just too easy to get a cross in on him.

He's a destabilising element in the defense, brings too much uncertainty/rashness in his play.

Can't deal with him anymore.

Benteke has definitely been affected by the villa situation. He could well start scoring again if team morale continues to escalate.

I'd still take him out of that 3 as he's the most capable when on his game and has got more depth to his game.

You know full well that he presses, harassed, harries off the ball the way Poch wants, and when we have the ball he moves and makes himself available at all times the way Poch wants. Doesn't mean he's good enough, but it does show he follows instructions, which is a start.

His general play yesterday was definitely good enough in terms of harassing and bullying our centre backs, stretching them with his movement, and playing some lovely flicks and linking play. Also, as soon as he gets the ball he finds the space to shoot and is almost always on target. I reckon he'd be a superb alternative to Harry (though I'd prefer Ings ever so slightly).

Not for me really whenever I've watched him. I think Kane is a level ahead of him, more intelligent movement and all round a more intelligent footballer.

Austin has a very sweet shot on him though and does occupy CBs really well, but its a no for me.

That's just the bare functional minimum and I don't think he even does those effectively.

I've reached my limit with him. I can understand why others hang in there, but I can't see us developing the way we need to with our FB situation, full stop, as that position is so crucial to this system. So it's not just kyle, but his situation is the most drastic imo.

Again, I urge people to go and watch some s'ton games from last season and watch Clyne work the flank (and shaw on the other). That's the level of effectiveness poch wants/needs.

If kyle can't manage it his card will be marked.

QPR arguably started the game stronger and certainly finished stronger while we held on to a slender lead

For the rest of the game however we were pretty comfortable and in control and could have won by more

They had their chances and we had ours, it was a close and hard fought game. I wouldn't have argued against them deserving a point had they got one but I equally don't agree that we didn't deserve to win

In a competitive EPL away game both teams had several very good chances and we took more than they did so came away with the win
