A couple of seasons ago we would have been beaten but now we have a top class mentality.

We have winners in the team and belief

I'm completely mystified by the multitude who keep insisting that we were 'lucky' to win today. It's just a bizarre, backwards notion of chance, luck, fortune or whatever you want to call it. Cardiff were hanging on through two or three continuous 10-15 minutes spells of Spurs pressure. I think they had one shot on target. We had about 25 shots and a lot of them were very good - they just got saved by a good goalkeeper having a great day. And we benefited from one of those refereeing decisions that are about acuity of vision and instant judgment, not about 'luck'. If we must discuss 'luck', then we were incredibly 'unlucky' not to be about 4-1 up by the 70th minute, which was when Cardiff started clawing their way back in the match.

They key point here is that this is what we just paid all that money for: players who have that extra focus and determination to break Cardiff's collective heart in the 94rd minute. Bale has it. Apparently, Paulinho, Lamela and Holtby also have it. Based on his previous 3 matches (because he was pretty anonymous today), Eriksen has it.

It's why players like Bale and Ronaldo and Drogba and Van Persie (and Scholes and Giggs and Gerrard) are worth so much: because they figure out how to get it done before the whistle goes, somehow. They find a way to win.

Cardiff ran their legs off, closed down like maniacs, tackled and organised and packed the box. Despite all that, they still had about 40% of the ball, made scarcely any chances, except those that we created for them through atypically slipshod defending, got the ball on target once and were so knackered by the 80th minute that we managed to get control of the game back, as soon as we stopped panicking and slashing the ball in all directions and resumed passing it calmly. Introducing a skilful dribbler (Lamela) and a high-energy attacking midfielder (Holtby) when Cardiff were on their next to last breath worked because they just couldn't keep holding out any longer and we had players on our bench who are every bit as good as the ones who had just spent 90 minutes playing rings around the opposition.

'Lucky?' We totally dominated the game. Even taking into account our dodgy/crazed moments, the accurate score for that game was about 6-2.
If it were a boxing match it would be a hospital job.

Just seen the Paulinho goal for the first time. Yes I watched the match, but was doing crazy things when the goal went in and what a fucking goal. How cheeky was that back heel, what a way to win an amazing match.

What a really great game.

The more of these games we can win the better. it'll only reinforce their confidence and keep their heads up until the final whistle.

Gaaaaaaaaaaawd I love late winners. :woot:

As a BTW, did the game on TV show whether Loris did actually handle the ball outside the box? From what I saw it was certainly close, but I thought it was on the line. That said it wasn't a very good quality picture.

It seems ever so close, and if it's not clear on tv then one doubts whether the ref would have had a clearer view. (And Clattenburg does seem to be one of these refs who is a perfectionist when it comes to seeing things clearly before giving a decision) His hand seems to chop down on the ball and then his hand hits the line and moves fractionally forward over the line. My eyes suggest to me that the contact must have been made with the ball partly above the line. Is the line not considered to be a part of the area?

We'll be hearing all sorts of guff from so called experts about this one. I've heard Alan Green say on many occasions "that was a deliberate hand ball ref, it has to be a red card"; that's when there has been no suggestion of a goalscoring chance. He still hasn't absorbed the fact that the punishment for hand ball is a free kick.

How often have we seen a ball placed adjacent to the quadrant for a corner kick, and people complaining it's not in the area? Well if it's on the green grass (ie not on the white grass), but part of it is overhanging the line then it's in the quadrant. Likewise with the ball in or out of play.

So it'll be interesting to hear what the not so expert experts think about it....

Yes. What I like is that we don't panic. The tempo goes up a bit obviously but we don't just pump long balls into the box etc. Still keep playing our game.

That was the first time my heart rate was going mental this season. I'm liking this bossing the game tactic we have now under AVB. Far less stressful.
