Not much to report really so far. The last few minutes of the half have been slightly better, but Villa haven't played enough football. You can tell Onomah has ability every time he is on the ball, it just hasn't happened enough.
However my usual critique also applies... I wish sometimes he'd be a bit busier as it would benefit him massively to make impact on games. You can still be languid but making runs into a position to get yourself involved - Josh doesn't strike me as a 'thinker', someone who reads/anticipates the game and what might happen a phase or two ahead. I also don't think he's been very good defensively in that 45 mins in all truth, at close quarters he's scrapped for it but he's been pretty weak having to track back and again his reading of the game comes into play - when to make the burst to get back in to cover space etc.
Hopefully he is more involved in the second half.
As much as I wanted Josh to get some game time and happy for him to get a loan, I feel that sending him to Villa is a bit of a stitch up. They seemed to start with a 3-4-2-1 with Josh in the 2, but not much football is going to be built up from the back when you have John Terry and Samba in the back 3. To add Glenn Whelan in midfield to that and playing any kind of decent football is always going to be a struggle. Might be better if they had players like Grealish and Lansbury in the team, not sure if those guys are injured/out of favour.
He was playing further up again though wasn't he?
He needs to be playin in the deeper midfield role.
Villa ended up playing a kind of 4141 with Onomah rcm in the 4. On the move it was more 41311 I think.
Either way, it wasn't a bad set up with Whelan doing the mopping up and Onomah playing more as an 8.

What have Villa fans had to say about his performance?
Absolutely quality.
He's really fantastic. I'd be shocked if under the guidance of Poch at Spurs he doesn't end up being a top player in a few years time, definitely has all the attributes.
Really think he will continue to grow as he gets more first team experience, he is the (loan) signing of the summer so far for me.
really good player, said it before he glides with the ball. Way too good for us sadly
As well as being pure class with the ball, his work off the ball and tackling is quality. I Really enjoy watching him play and can see him getting better.
Excellent player. Very Delph like in his movement and ability on the ball.
Best player on the park last night. Has an eye for a pass, strength, vision, dribbling, composure and a cracking shot.
He makes it look easy. I'm looking forward to seeing him grow throughout the season.
He's good.
His beard is not.
Onomah by far the best player we have and he's not even ours...
The only downside was that he was being compared to Delph!....

Sadly I don't think he posts any more, but I remember @Kendall having an absolute crush-boner for Fabian Delph, back in the day.Delph is a good player, like Scott Sinclair, made the complete wrong decision with his career. If he would have moved to us under the guidance of Poch i think he would be a very valuable squad player.
