I just don’t think it is as complicated or tactical as people are making it.

We find it very difficult to play out when our midfield and defence are vigorously pressed. Opposition clubs have worked this out.

But they can’t press for 90 minutes and the press inevitably slows down after half time.

We’re much fitter than nearly all of our opponents and we have some mentally tough, match-winning players, so we progressively take over most games as the second half proceeds. Sometimes that produces a comeback win and sometimes it produces a comeback draw.

If Conte can figure out how to get our midfield to play through and around the press, this will fade as a problem.

That may or may not require new midfielders, but it will require a new wingback or two.

And we are missing Kulusevski desperately.
Agree with all of this 100%. Especially the part about Kulu. However, it does beggar the question about why? Why do we miss him so much? I think a huge part of his game is the ability to hold up the ball and help us break the press. He does this with physicality, technique, intelligence, composure and fearlessness. We need that in our two wing backs. We arguably need it more in a front three even when Kulu plays. Richy has shown some of that. But a front three of Kane, Moura and Sonny is hard, as they can often be bullied out of games… especially Son and Moura. So, yeah, the last month our team has been weird. We only seem to trigger our aggression mode once we go behind. To compound matters, having both Kulu and Richy out for so long means Sonny and Harry must be past the red zone physically. Folks really need to account for exactly what you are saying regarding the full backs, and they ‘why’ we miss Kulu type player.

Many of the same people were disgusted - DISGUSTED - that Emerson Royal was subbed on at half time.

will they be back to acknowledge that the sun was a good one and helped our eventual victory?

or will they disappear now we've had a positive result this proving the op's point?
I'm annoyed there was zero no look passes tonight tbh

So.... how mental did this thread go when we were 1-0 down at half time and Emerson Royal came on?

I know that I had a hissy fit in the pub, but we were actually much better balanced when hw did. (although Bentancur was much better playing higher up)

It's just another example of Royal Derangement syndrome - like no other player has missed a no look pass or skied a tricky swivel volley
...

People just like piling on. Were addicted to bullying the easy target unfortunately

Royal played a big part in changing the game- MOTM second half for me. Early tackles, positive pases pushed us forward.
Its come to the stage where he is considered MOTM when he does nothing ridiculous, he did ok in the 2nd half but it was likes of Bentancur who dragged us back into the game, not Royal.

Bit of a rollercoaster game of emotions

Extremely disappointed in the first half

Proud of the effort in second half. Warrior like!

Ready to smash the TV in the 90th minute when they miss a sitter, almost smash the TV in excitement when Pierre rounds off a great win.

Bloody Spurs

Does each kid Kane have make him ‘dad’ it up more?

Top of the group with as many points as Man City, PSG and more points than Madrid, and Chavs.

Job very much well done.

Fabulous second half, again.

I swear the English CBS co-commentator was drunk. He had such insights as "Ooooooo just the 3 degrees of seperation" when a shot went over, and at one point described HK as a hungry horse. ?
He’s an annoying tit. Equally annoying was the commentator who kept calling Marseille OM. Just lazy and insulting. Never called us TH.

If we play like we normally do in the opening 30 mins v Liverpool we'll be 5-0 down

Again, that's my issue with Conte
You’re just fear mongering now.

We’ve played better teams than this version of Liverpool and we haven’t conceded anywhere near 5 goals in the opening 5 minutes.

Sorry disagree. You need to remove bias and give credit where its due. After the lackluster first half, Royal gave us that spark we needed. One player shows the initiative and it encourage others to follow. He was breaking up the play on the right and playing pisitive forward passes. He is allowed to have a good game even though hes not a great footbalk player..

Well we had to go away to one of the fiercest venues in the champions league and get a result with a diminished back line and without Kulusevski and Richarlison and we lost Son mid way through the first half and we done it and more, we won the group on this result.
That shows balls if nothing else.
And yet people complain and refuse to just enjoy the victory.

Another very, very frustrating first half and another very satisfying result. I do think that all this stuff about deliberate negative football is a bit of a weird thing now, we've instances of both the players and Conte (and coaches) saying it isn't what they set out to do so anyone suggesting it's how we want to play isn't paying attention or is so invested in the complaining that they just don't care to.

We all want to enjoy it, we all want to see us play attractive football, of course we do, people aren't wrong to want that and on some levels, we all agree don't we? Yes it's poor, yes, you're right, it's frustrating but there's still aspects and positives to take so believe it or not, it isn't all bad. It really isn't.

Last night was frustrating for sure, but the second half was excellent and if that didn't excite you, then what on earth are you doing? We played much more like it, we showed character and got the result. Enjoy the moment, don't suck the life out of it. Instead, take some measure of enjoyment out of it, take the positives. Just for a change :D
