I don't think they are doing anything illegal but they will likely be as tax efficient as possible or use limited companies to manage their tax. Nothing dodgy just what you expect from Rich people being greedy...
Technically, if you're working a fixed contract that has benefits equal to that of an employee then you should be taxed as an employee (PAYE). It's all in IR35 and is more complicated than I've put in a sentence, but the overall sentiment is the same. The loopholes seem to be related to their separate image rights, such as sponsorship and advertising etc. I think a lot has been tackled by HMRC as they were on the case back in 2011:
