Are the club using reverse psychology on the fans with our transfer policy?

It's a theory that has grown and grown on me over the last few weeks.

According to several resepected ITK's we have signed the same strikers 8 times over, yet still we haven't signed one....

Now with 4 days to go, and another rumour of "Adebayor being revealed on the website today" (yesterday), should this rumour prove to be correct, it's going to make it seem to everyone like it's a mammoth, marquee signing, when really, it's not is it? It's just a good signing...

Has this tactic been the plan the whole way through? Has Adebayor always been a Spurs player but the club have seen us down to the pits of despair, so that any signing we do make seems like the second coming?

If this is just conspiracy theory, do the following three points hold an element of truth?

  • We have to sell to buy. We know thats half true anyway....Jenas, Bentley, Bassong, all still here, but do we HAVE to sell Modric too?
  • We're shit at doing transfers, and our difficult sales policy, have made clubs become difficult in return?
  • We're grossly under prepared for the new season, and even if we do get new strikers, they won't be ready for a few weeks?
Most importantly, regardless of what is and isn't true, are the club inadvertantly pushing our new manager towards failure before he has even started? The pressure on him will be huge without at least 7 pts from the first 4 games, and that will all be down to not having a complete team, for the 3rd times in five season.

you're really taking this too seriously. Our owners will do the best they can with what they have available. I don't think they waste too much time thinking that playing the fool with transfer strategy and lack or pre-season training just to appease the fans

It seems we need to sell in order to create funds to buy. The stadium and training ground have taken their toll, which is to be expected.
Look back over the past 2/3 years and look at how much we have spent. Peanuts.

I do take it seriously yes. If Modric goes last minute and we have no signings, I will cry, and then offer my season ticket up for the year....

If your not pleasing the fans, then your barking up the wrong trees. They are the most powerful ally of any football club.

Yah, too often things are presented as 'sports entertainment' with characters and plots and with an audience whose opinion matters. The Clubs will understand the economic value of certain things, like a big marquee signing at the right time; or rudimentary PR spin, like burying a sale behind a new purchase. But massaging the expectations of a smallish subset of fans in such arcane ways probably doesn't occur to them.

I've thought about that a lot recently. Under Redknapp people were self-harming, then AVB and a couple of signings arrive and many were just as happy as if we'd won a trophy. I wonder how successful a club could be if it focused not on the football but the off the field antics. You could be a nondescript mid-table outfit but every summer you made outrageous signings and had dramatic transfer sagas. Whilst the games are unremarkable, you have a manager who knows how to play to the fans, amusing and embiggening them. Would such a club prosper. Probably.

I do t think there are any agendas, I just think we have money tied up in lots of different areas. New stadium training complex etc. we have to sell to buy quite clearly. Very frustrating but for us it is reality, we don't have the funds of the likes of Chelsea or city. We have spent 20 mil already haven't we. That is a lot of money

Actually we've spent nothing, having sold Pienaar, Kranjcar and Corluka, and that's not counting on the sale of Pav in Jan.

True but then we don't know how the payments have gone both in and out on transfers. As I said frustrating but we have to hope DL has a plan, I just don't see him wanting to allow the same sloppy start as last season

Everything seems to be hinging on Real Madrid money for Modric. If this deal doesn't come off I'd be surprised if we can mount a serious challenge for the top half of the table let alone a CL place or a bit of silver.

I don't think we are waiting to sell. We are probably only looking at buying one player, a striker, and we are looking to buy the right one.

We don't need to sell to buy Ade or Leandro, just negotiate a lot to make it work.

Does seem that way! They give a bit of false hope and even though we all know that its 90% rubbish we still hope they are true!
