I don't think we're poor; I think we're financially limited.

We can afford to buy an expensive player on reasonably high wages if the circumstances are right, but my point was that unlike clubs such as Monaco, PSG and City, we are not in position where our USP to prospective big-name signings can be £££

Athletico will not be paying him 100K a week

No, but they are a title winning, CL final reaching team. That's their USP.

They are a bigger selling club than us and they will not win the league again anytime soon..If Griezmann prefers to go to them fair enough but we should not automatically consider Athletico Madrid a bigger draw than Spurs.

No, they don't really. They have huge debts and are financially strained and have been for quite a while now.
Players couldn't give a shit really as long as they get paid. All they see is titles, CL, and one of the hottest managers in the world in Simeone.

Simeone not exactly confirming a done deal, praises the player but says there have been loads of players linked. Maybe that's a shrewd move to keep the lid on things till it's done. I guess we should know very soon

Yep I have to agree. If there's two main things players want it's

1. Regular CL football and trophies etc

2. Money.

We are okay in the second part to a degree. We may be quite tight when compared to the top teams around us in the PL but we are a big PL team and PL teams offer big wages in the main. We can't do it willy nilly though and we don't currently have the first thing players want.

Atletico at this point very clearly and firmly have number 1.

And really all they have to do is match the money we would offer.....they may be skint but they don't need to offer the same wages as Real or Barca as Greizmann's market has narrowed since the beginning of summer. Monaco could win on wages but seem to have turned to Gaitan as a solution.

All Atleti would need to do is put forward a better wage than Sociedad and on par with what we would offer and they are then able to highlight their strengths (just won a title, CL performance, Simeone) in that light it becomes hard to compete unless were to just throw stupid cash at him.

Look he may well go but Athletico have already lost their first choice goalkeeper, left back and striker. You're kidding yourself if they're going to go anywhere near close to repeating last year's efforts.

That said it's not exactly a challenge to finish 3rd or 4th in La Liga. Someone should mention that to Gareth Bale next time he talks to the press.

Except they have made some really good additions despite losing those players. Griezemann, Mandzukic, Oblak, Siqueira and Correa are all talented in their own rights. Plus Simeone is incredible.

Time to close...

@GraemeBailey: Atletico Madrid announce deal for Antoine Griezmann - great signing.
Not based on anything posted on Twitter it isn't.

But in this case Atletico have come out and said in a statement: "The young French footballer will sign a contract with our teams once he passes his medical," so you're right!

The La Liga champions, beaten Champions League finalists who are in the Champions League once again. Staying in a league which contains Ronaldo, Messi, Bale, Neymar, Suarez, James etc. I've no idea why some fans think we could've beat Atl. Madrid to his signature.

Remind me which club is in the most watched league in the world by far... Remind me which league has full stadiums every week and is tough on racism... Remind me which club is in one of the top 5 Cities in the world..

We also have great players in the premier league and the most success goes in cycles. Tottenham had a fantastic debut in the Champions league and were cheated from taking part a second time.

None of the players you mentioned play for Athletico Madrid which incidentally has sold two of it`s best players to Chelsea. Does La Liga have more classic games each season than the Premier League? world wide TV rights says not!!

I am not disrespecting La Liga or Athletico Madrid I am saying we should be able to complete with them. They are not Real Madrid or Barcelona!! They had a great season last year and I wanted them to do well because they were the underdog against all the odds.

Greizmann is not Spanish he is French and the French do well and love it in the UK. Why are people treating me like im in some fantasy world. If we can take a young Argentinian from Roma a team with a far greater history and standing in the game that Athletico then we can persuade a player to come to us and not them.

you have your view and I have mine and in my view some of you are showing disrespect to the Premier League and dear I say it Tottenham Hotspur!!

there's so much that is wrong with your post, that it's hard to know quite where to begin. the mere fact, for instance, that you believe Roma to have a far greater history and standing within the game than Atletico genuinely blows my mind
