Atmosphere at The Lane

Leading on from the thread around the poor atmosphere at Wembley, why has the atmosphere at The Lane dropped so badly? I used to be proud of the old school atmosphere we generated at The Lane while grounds such as Stamford Bridge and the Emirates were sterile by comparison. Norwich was one of the worst I can remember in 40 years of following Spurs. Who remembers Sevilla a few years back, even though we were down and out we raised the roof. What has happened, do we now expect too much? Let's start to get back behind the team and be the 12th man, starting tomorrow. COYS!

I think there has been an element of shock at the way things changed for the worse so quickly. That would definitely dumb down the crowd.

I do agree though that the supporters need to keep up the noise level and the encouragement - it adds excitement and it does make a difference to the players.

100% agree unfortunately.

It's been poor for the last two seasons

I always used to mock the goons and chavski for the rubbish atmosphere and always thought that if spurs ever got successful we would always have a great atmosphere. I was wrong.

Another big reason for me is the average age at the Lane. I'm in the park lane lower which is the noisiest part of the ground and it seems everyone around me and me included have all grown up and am not as voiceful as we all once were. There is a severe lack of youngsters at the games (between 16 and 25) and this is quite simply down to price and the difficulty of obtaining tickets.

It's all got a bit stale.

Maybe the hardcore fans had got a little too comfortable with us being at the top end of the table and then suddenly have been very uncomfortable meaning the vocal nature of their support is expressed in profanity instead of song (with the odd profanity)? Whatever reason, we need to get back on track.

Complacency is the issue. All of a sudden not only have the players become 'Johnny Big Bollocks', so have the fans, me included. We turn up at the Lane expecting a straight forward whipping of the opposition. Well we all need to have a reality check and get back to what we're good at, supporting and winning. Complacency is evil.

It's all got a bit serious. We used to have fun even when we were crap. We definitely need to start getting some youngsters through he turnstiles. I was watching some old clips from the 80's and the Park Lane was full of teenagers, the only way teenagers could afoard too go now is if Dad takes them ( I'm doing my bit!) Used to be 20 of us travelling up from North Essex in the 80's, just don't think you get that any more. Fantastic days!

Yep Sevilla and Ar5ena1 games were amazing for atmosphere.

I went to the FA Cup games against Bolton with mates who were other fans and a United fan said it had been the second best atmosphere he'd been to, so it's not too bad.

I avoid premier league games these days against the likes of Stoke etc because they're often really quite stale.

I'm 21 but I only go on the odd occasion to a cup game when prices are cheaper or an away match. Our away support is still good.

Agree the away support is still good in most cases although we were terrible at Sunderland.

Too expensive
No terracing
Being told to sit down or shut up by stewards or other fans
Johnny Come lately fans expecting us to win every game at home 4-0

Will be worse at a new stadium though when groups of people who sit together now are distributed all over the ground, Emirates Mark II

Only good thing with the new ground is that they will move season ticket holders together to keep the camaraderie that has built up over the years. Think this will be a good thing as I have been sitting with pretty much the same group for the last 10 years.

We've had some great atmospheres during times when most of that occurred anyway.

At least that is good news, I know it wasn't the case at Arsenal.

Not that they noticed much difference

i sit in the 2nd loudest part of the ground - shelf/park lane corner and you look around and there's still loads of people just sitting there in silence, i know they can do what they like but it still irks me.

Can't understand why they got rid of terracing. Terracing was not the problem, overfilling it was. A season ticketed terrace would be as safe as seating. Bringing back terracing would definitely help with the atmosphere and allow people to stand with their mates, unlike the current system (unless you are very organised).

Think yourself lucky, I sit in the Paxton! We only come to life about 4 games a season!

It's hard to get excited when the opposition just puts 10 men behind the ball. Makes for dull viewing and poor atmosphere.

Yes I have been to a few of those, Sevilla as mentioned and also recent wins over Arsenal and Chelsea at home but they are exceptions to the norm in my experience of the last 5 / 6 seasons
