Chiriches for Dawson?

Dawson is awful, against Chelsea and West Ham he looked Championship standard, I lost count of the amount of times he dived in and got nowhere near the ball. Torres, a player supposedly lacking in confidence, made him look a fool.

He's not awful. Fucking hell.

There is no guarantee that kaboul will be the player he was with so much time spent injured

Well this thread is bollocks!

Dawson awful?? How many times have you seen him throw himself into a block or put his head on the line to save certain goals? And i know the England defence isnt what it used to be but he has been called up by several managers so he can't be awful.

Yes he has flaws (David Beckham long ball syndrome for one) but so does everyone else. Dawson has been a fantastic servant to this club and to call him an awful defender is just plain poppycock! Chiraches might end up being a much better CB than our Michael but for now at least, Dawson righlty gets selected for the League games.

Chiriches is good player.
This idea of keeping them wrapped in cotton wool is nonsense. Get them playing and stop relying on our experienced players because if the fallacious notion that players aren't ready or adjusted to the league.

Paulinho starts every game, nobody bats an eyelid, he came and he settled.

This, it's not like the Premier League is a footballing mecca, it's a league full of very basic skill where an elastico is celebrated as though the player is the next Pele or Maradona.

I want to see Chiriches play, not because Dawson is awful but because I actually rate Chiriches and have liked what I've seen so far

No guarantee but he has looked pretty solid to me so far this season. Such a pity he seems destined to be our new sicknote.

Dawson is not the best defender in the world, or even at Spurs
but he certainly isn't awful.
He will be replaced by Chichires when he is ready
which he has shown twice that he is not,
or by Kaboul if he regains full fitness, which I doubt.
Vertonghen hasn't exactly covered himself in glory yet this season either.

How many times have you seen him shown up?
More often than you've seen him do something heroic.

If you can find statistics which show how many goals against he's directly repsponsible for then fine, other than that i believe that he will have prevented far more than given away! You need to remember that he's not always had fullbacks that hold their shape or wingers that drop back to help out, his pace is a problem in this instance but he more than makes up for this in other ways. He's commanding in the air and actually marshalls the defence pretty well (this isn't as much of an issue as it was now that Lloris is between the sticks).

Oh well, everyone needs a scapegoat apparently

He's not the only one mate, so don't take it too personally..

Walker and all our fullbacks are useless too. Walker is MASSIVE liability IMO.

No question that Dawson is a decent player. But I too want to see what Chiriches can do and playing him in a second string side in cup competitions does not really help him settle into the EPL. The same with Lamela and Holtby. I think AVB needs to work out what his best side is and then start playing them together in the league. Sure it will take time to gel but now is the time to do it not from December onwards when all the top sides go up a gear

This thread is about Dawson so I'm sticking to discussing him only.

Re stats showing how many goals he's prevented, you'd only get goal scoring opportunities prevented.

And that's the problem with stats, they won't give you the opposite for comparison, ie how many opportunities he failed to prevent. Especially as a lot of them will result in a save for the keeper or a miss from the opposition player.

Our back 4 are so poor. Our strong midfield were making them appear to be doing well. As soon as AVB fudged up our midfield (a la Wet Spam), we leak 3, all from defensive mishaps.

Fullbacks are shoddy and Dawson is piss-poor.

End of.

Well I was going to post a reply but then I saw this and realised the thread is closed to further responses. Damn.

Reactionary about Walker? How many times have we collectively (on here) berated him for crucial mistakes, some of which have cost us games? Plenty is the answer.

And Dawson being far from prem standard might be and exaggeration, but he is so so bad. I can't honestly name an element of his game that I rate, apart from his spirit.

Please don't group me in with this drivel.

I think the worst defender we have and reiterate defender, is Kyle Walker, he just doesn't seem to be learning, and I am not talking about West Ham, he was ill or whatever. But he certainly is a liability, he makes so many mistakes or fouls in dangerous positions! I really believe if we are to splash some cash in January we need to do it on our defence badly! At least one full back and another CB, Daws is not awful but he we could do better.

Its funny, I am not a fan of Walker but I actaully think his defending has improved and over time he'll learn more about positioning etc. Its the rest of his game that's sub standard and shows zero signs of improvement to me.
