Chiriches has played Champions league football and has captained his country.
He looked nervous first couple of games, but I for one would have him in instead of Dawson...

Our back 4 are so poor. Our strong midfield were making them appear to be doing well. As soon as AVB fudged up our midfield (a la Wet Spam), we leak 3, all from defensive mishaps.

Fullbacks are shoddy and Dawson is piss-poor.

End of.
Aye. We can get away with Walker Kaboul Verts Rose and consider that decent, as kaboul is a great reader at the back and can cover for Walker going totally missing and rose is steady enough...not great, but steady enough.

Take kaboul out of it though and it crumbles, which is why we desperately need a whopping CB in jan - as well as two fullbacks - as Kaboul seems to be doing a ledley.

Walker Chiri Kaboul Rose is a goer as well in my eyes, but stick Daws in there and it's just all wrong, especially if naughton has to play LB.

Now Chiri Kaboul Verts Rose...(y)

That would tide me over as a starting back line until January.

Its funny, I am not a fan of Walker but I actaully think his defending has improved and over time he'll learn more about positioning etc. Its the rest of his game that's sub standard and shows zero signs of improvement to me.

Sometimes he has his head screwed on and shows what he is capable of but I've lost count of the amount of times he has taken someone down 10 yards of our box, he must be one of the worst in the league for it, I do think he has enormous potential but really needs to start to work on the basics, being ill against W Ham doesn't mean he should be over the half way line with zero chance of recovery, why put yourself in that position. It's like he wants to be a winger at times. Hope he comes good, cause if he does he would be very good.

Have to agree with that back four as long as Kaboul is injury free

Yeah, I know what you mean. The big problem for me is that he is actually not very good going forward. Unless you class running extremely fast at the opposition in a straight line as good attacking play.

Reactionary about Walker? How many times have we collectively (on here) berated him for crucial mistakes, some of which have cost us games? Plenty is the answer.

And Dawson being far from prem standard might be and exaggeration, but he is so so bad. I can't honestly name an element of his game that I rate, apart from his spirit.

Heading ability, tackling, good positioning, IMO all dawson lacks is pace and passing out from thr back

Positional sense: None
Awareness of opposition: None
Awareness of team mates: Striker only

Being good at headers n stuff is all well and good. But it's not an indication of being a to class defender.

Do me a favour daws has his flaws like most but he has played alot of games at prem level now and he wouldnt have done that if he was as bad as you say.

Vertoghen has some flaws as well but because he is a good passer and brings the ball out from the back it tends to blind some people from seeing them

Dawson's a better passer than most give him credit for - the 'hoof myth' absolutely does my head in.

Conversely he's not as good in the air or the tackle as people seem to think.

His speciality is blocks, which he's generally very good at.

He should be third choice behind a fit Kaboul and Vertonghen - this idea that he's 'awful' as said by the OP is idiotic, but ideally he wouldn't be starting in the league, but would be captaining the side in all three cup competitions and first choice CB on the bench in the league.

Frankly I'm pretty sure that's how AVB still sees it, but he can't play Kaboul in the league at the moment due to his fitness problems.

I just think Dawson struggles playing a high line and if AVB is set on playing one than we probably need to try Vlad until Kaboom gets back. I love Dawson but he can look a little lost sometimes, he isn't super quick and sometimes his long balls are just pure waste.... Not all the time, but sometimes. It's prob more the fault of our mids not getting into space but it does happen.

wow, a lot of people have dawson balls in their mouths?

It's cute. Honorable even.

But I will return to this thread the next time our beloved captain has a howler. Which will no doubt be against Villa.

I hope he can make it happen though seriously! And back onto the subject of Daws, I hope he stays with this club to end of his career, he is a leader and loves the club to the core, but I think we will upgrade and he will be a part of the squad

And the way you turn on one of our players when he has done little wrong is embarrasing

The Big thing with Dawson overt the years is that he only plays because we never have a fully fit choice of Centre backs available.
When we have he's not been first choice.
Going back a few years he was behind King and Woodgate.
He's been behind King and Gallas, King and Kaboul and, imo, would be behind Kaboul and Vertonghen if Kaboul was fully fit.

Using a criticism often levelled at Defoe, what big teams have come in for him? Ever?
When it was obvious last year that we would sell him who would spend the money? QPR.

He's a decent player, a top bloke and a great role model. But he's not good enough to be first choice Centre back for a club with title aspirations.

This is completely true, as I pointed out above - however, just because he has his faults, and is not our best defender, it does not mean he should be subject to the random diatribes of people like the OP, who then claim when some people say Dawson 'isn't awful' that 'they have Dawson's balls in their mouth'.

Like every player, Dawson has his strengths and his faults - but it's only players like him and Defoe who seem to attract the frankly bizarre personal-insult level of abuse, for the terrible insult of daring to not be as good as some of the other players we have.

I've lost count of the amount of times BC (for example) has called Defoe a wanker, prick, **** etc in his post-match ratings just because he's not played well/shot too often etc. I don't think personal abuse of players is ok (I used to cringe reading some of the stuff Jenas used to get on here) and neither do I really think it's ok for people to start claiming that certain players are 'awful' or 'terrible' when they quite clearly aren't.

Some of these ideas are absolutely staggering. Verts at LB, Chiriches at RB, Kaboul at RB. Sends chills down my spine
