Some of these ideas are absolutely staggering. Verts at LB, Chiriches at RB, Kaboul at RB. Sends chills down my spine

Chiri plays RB for Romania, hes a ball playing defender.
When was the last you saw a defender scoring with a bicycle kick
here it is if you missed it
I for one would love to see his natural game down the wing, rather than from CB.
It would give Walker a rest and some decent competition for his place.
Win win all round if you ask me.

Walkers the best right back we've had in the Prem era, and still young and going to get better, yet some of you seem determined to hound him out of our Club? You're gonna regret this if you carry on trust me, theres a certain moneybags team that plays in blue that would love to have him if he became available.

Dawson's a better passer than most give him credit for - the 'hoof myth' absolutely does my head in.

Conversely he's not as good in the air or the tackle as people seem to think.

His speciality is blocks, which he's generally very good at.

He should be third choice behind a fit Kaboul and Vertonghen - this idea that he's 'awful' as said by the OP is idiotic, but ideally he wouldn't be starting in the league, but would be captaining the side in all three cup competitions and first choice CB on the bench in the league.

Frankly I'm pretty sure that's how AVB still sees it, but he can't play Kaboul in the league at the moment due to his fitness problems.

spot on

This thread is about Dawson so I'm sticking to discussing him only.

Re stats showing how many goals he's prevented, you'd only get goal scoring opportunities prevented.

And that's the problem with stats, they won't give you the opposite for comparison, ie how many opportunities he failed to prevent. Especially as a lot of them will result in a save for the keeper or a miss from the opposition player.

Plus, how many of the "goal scoring opportunities prevented" via a last ditch tackle/block wouldn't have even needed the last ditch tackle/block had the defender been in the correct position or read the game better.

IMO, the best defenders in the game rarely need to make last ditch tackles & blocks, as they have dealt with the situation before it gets to that stage.

I just think Dawson struggles playing a high line and if AVB is set on playing one than we probably need to try Vlad until Kaboom gets back. I love Dawson but he can look a little lost sometimes, he isn't super quick and sometimes his long balls are just pure waste.... Not all the time, but sometimes. It's prob more the fault of our mids not getting into space but it does happen.

Theoretically, yes, but how often has it been a problem in practice?

This.
It might provoke an ancient instinct in a man to see a player pull off a heroic block or tackle.
But the best defenders are 3 stages ahead of the play and cut the danger out with far less spectacular interceptions.

Look at Ledley. The man NEVER looked flustered or had to pull off last ditch tackles.

It really stinks that we did such a wonderful job this transfer window but couldn't finish it off leaving some deficiencies in our squad

It was stupid but it's what we always do. It's usually been 1 or 2 glaring deficiencies that have prevented us from reaching our goals. For example, a proper striker in 2010-11 and we would have finished top 4 imo.

I think people are confusing speed with footballing intelligence/reading of game/ability.

I'll say it again: Walker without speed = Naughton.

In fact I think Naughton is technically a better footballer than Walker. Walker just has better physical attributes that mask his footballing deficiencies.

I've been a supporter for the past 5 years n thats something I've found is very common in us.Not getting a striker, finishing off games, filling the gaps in our squad,no proper depth n if there is then no proper rotation policy, finishing off a season in good style, playing our staring 11 on thursdays n losing points on weekends, etc. All the above mentioned points don't exactly make us a top club,do they?

Well if we did ALL those things, we'd win the league.

Bollocks. Naughton cant even kick the ball 30 yards let alone score from it.

Backheel against Chelsea? Might only come off one time out of ten but that's one time more than Naughton could pull it off.

Fuck sake some of these comments are coming from people who have never watched the game.

Again. Bollocks.

He looks technically better because he does fuck all apart from pass two yards backwards.

I could look technically good doing that.

BC couldn't though.

No. He looks technically better because he is technically better.

Better touch, better passing range, better at crossing the ball. He can actually dribble with the ball as well.

It's just his attitude and physical attributes that let him down. He doesn't get up and down the pitch well and he never commits in challenges. He also doesn't seem to have a change in pace.

I usually rate and agree with you very highly, but that is a savagely nonsense post mate.

Think I'll just let that post pass by like a very bad smell. Stinking up the thread.
