DM/CM - Axel Witsel - no strong links, but rumoured to be available for around £22m, Chelsea sniffing around him. Genuine all rounder, capable of bossing from deep or going box to box, think he'd be ideal in tandem with Bentaleb. Time to utilise the Belgian contingent to get in his ear???
Alternatives - two schools of thought here, try for tried and tested, like McCarthy or Song, or take a punt on Cambiasso or Thiago Motta to do an Edgar Davids for us mentoring our current young midfield options, without blocking their development. Rabiot is a popular choice, but I can't see PSG selling.

WF/CF - Alexandre Pato - my wild card signing. Media suggestions today that he wants to come to England, preferably a big city. After injury issues towards the end at Milan, he has racked up 130+ games over the last 3 years in Brazil, so a steady 40+ average per season. Ticks all the boxes, pace, skill, not short on physicality either, plus can play CF or wider. Price is currently lower than his Milan valuation would have been, and still only 25. Definitely worth a punt I'd say.
Alternatives - I like the incision the likes of Werner, Njie or especially Ntep offer, but Werner and Njie have been stated not for sale, and Ntep is currently injured. Moses has been linked, but I'd hope that's more of a last option. Berahino could be our best bet.

CF - Michy Batshuayi - another Belgian, so maybe we'd be an attractive option. Seems to have pace, skill and power. Capable of playing centrally or drifting wider. Still young, so on an upward slope. I think this is the sort of signing we should be looking to, similar to when Villa picked up Benteke and Swansea picked up Bony. Younger players with potential who are already starting to do the business, but joy necessarily in the major leagues like PL, La Liga etc where their values would already be high.
Alternatives - Berahino again, similar option centrally or capable of playing wide, but my concern would be WBA will be pricing him based on Sterlings fee, not as high, but with a premium. Moussa Konate was linked a few weeks back, pace, power, plays central or drifts wider, playing in the Swiss league, so not hugely tested but probably quite attainable. Steady international record points to him being plenty capable.

I feel a bit let down at the idea of a player like Mirales coming in. I think he is inconsistent, not up to the task and not enough of an improvement over Lennon.

I also don't rate Berahino all that highly. I fully expect to get flamed for this post, but wouldn't it be nice if the club aimed just a bit higher? Newcastle signed Mitrovic today, even Palace managed to buy Cabaye. Surely to be top 4 we need to bring in 1 high quality replacement for every 3 also rans we sell?

Why would anyone want Mitrovic over Berahino? People say Berahino has a bad attitude but Mitrovic is 1000 times worse. We also need more pace, not another slow poacher. I would say signing Berahino over Mitrovic would be aiming higher.

I reckon Cambiasso is the DM we have done, but Carrick is a good shout.

DM: Carrick - Experienced, easily slots in and would help our young midfielders.
ST: Dzeko - Premier League experience, different player to Kane and has a strong Premier League record (and would be no more expensive than Adebayor)
Wildcard: Draxler - Surprise player, could be another Eriksen or Holtby... Bags of potential

Michael Carrick - still has a very good season in him, could rotate due to age, great passer and would teach so much to Alli, Mason, Bentaleb, Carroll

Saido Berahino - Young, proven in this league, different skill set to Harry Kane, can lead the line solo, can play on the flanks, bags of pace

Talisca - Exciting young talent, number 10, has everything both technically and physically, gets goals too.

I find it intriguing when suggested incoming players are touted as being able to teach other players something.

Really ? They have the time to take aside other players and teach them something ? Don't we have teachers / coaches who do that ?

Baffling.

I see what you are staying, but equally there can be no question that Ledley King benefited from a season spent playing alongside Naybet, and it's been widely publicised that Edgar Davids used to spend time after training with some of our younger players.

Tom Huddlestone on Edgar Davids...
"He was probably a bit intimidating. Not through any fault of his own but just because of his legendary reputation. But as a guy, he was very nice and very easy to get on with. Throughout the few years he was there, he always spoke to the younger players and was giving us advice about things we needed to tweak in our game if we needed. It was general advice about all of football. Having been there and done it for a number of years, and especially as he broke into the team at Ajax at such a young age, he could relate and understand what we were going through."

Kevin Wimmer: “For me personally, I’m still a young player so I can learn a lot from people like Danny[Rose], Federico [Fazio] and Kyle [Walker],”

No, it's not a case of taking time out to teacht them. It's a case of the young players feeding off their experience and mentality, learning from the example they set and learning more about their own capabilities when a more experienced player is there to bring it out of them.

I'm not saying we ask Robbie Savage to come out of retirement. I'm suggesting we sign a very good midfielder, the best English passer of the past decade, who has won multiple championships and Sir Alex Ferguson picked to start in the middle for no fewer than three champions league finals. Our young players would improve just by playing with him.

I'd love to see Carrick back at the lane. It makes sense on so many levels. A player with his personality and experience would have such a positive impact on the squad. He's also won more than our whole squad put together. 5 EPLs and 1 CL. When's the last time we had a player on our books with that kind of record?

However, I suspect he may struggle with Poch's pressing and they wouldn't consider him as a result.
